In order to obtain the dynamic response behavior of the rock subjected to blasting loading, a shock-proof high sensitivity impact sensor which can measure high frequency dynamic force and strain events should be adopted. Because the impact sensors which uses quartz and piezoelectric element are costly, generally the strain measurement-based impact (SMI) sensors are applied to high speed loading devices. In this study, dynamic Brazilian tension tests of granitic rocks was conducted using the Nonex Rock Cracker (NRC) reaction driven-high speed loading device which adopts SMI sensors. The dynamic response of the granite specimens were monitored and the intermediate strain rate dependency of Brazilian tensile strengths was discussed.
In order to estimate blast damage zone and control rock fragmentation in blasting, it is important to obtain information regarding blast hole pressure. In this study, drop impact tests of acrylic, aluminium, steel sensors were performed to investigate the dynamic response characterizations of the sensors through the strain signals. As a result, the strain signals obtained from the steel sensors showed less sensitivity to impact force level and experienced small changes with various length of the sensors. The steel sensors were applied to measure the impact force of an electric detonator.
The measurement technique with dynamic shock sensor was widely used in academic experiment for blasting and impact. However, most of dynamic sensors are expensive so that it needs to be protected by external housing structures or damping devices. In this study, the calibration method for dynamic shock sensor under the distortion by external structures. Hopkinson pressure bar system was adopted to measure the input acceleration to the sensor, and it was compared to the acceleration measured by accelerometer with customized damping device. Consequently, it is conclued that this method can be useful to calibrate the dynamic shock sensor under the linear distortion.

Railroad bridges account for 25% of the entire high-speed rail network. Railway bridges are subject to gradual structural degradation or fatigue accumulation due to consistent and repeating excitation by fast moving trains. Wireless sensing technology has opened up a new avenue for bridge health monitoring owing to its low-cost, high fidelity, and multiple sensing capability. On the other hand, measuring the transient response during train passage is quite challenging that the current wireless sensor system cannot be applied due to the intrinsic time delay of the sensor network. Therefore, this paper presents a framework for monitoring such transient responses with wireless sensing systems using 1) real-time excessive vibration monitoring through ultra-low-power MEMS accelerometers, and 2) post-event time synchronization scheme. The ultra-low power accelerometer continuously monitors the vibration and trigger network when excessive vibrations are detected. The entire network of wireless smart sensors starts sensing through triggering and the post-event time synchronization is conducted to compensate for the time error on the measured responses. The results of this study highlight the potential of detecting the impact load and triggering the entire network, as well as the effectiveness of the post-event time synchronized scheme for compensating for the time error. A numerical and experimental study was carried out to validate the proposed sensing hardware and time synchronization method.

The piezoelectric thin film sensor has good characteristics to observe the impact responses of composite structures. The capabilities for monitoring impact behavior of Gr/Ep laminates subjected to damage-induced impact using the PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensor were examined. For a series of low-velocity impact tests from low energy to damage-induced energy, simulated sensor signals were compared with measured signals and the PVDF film sensor. Local impact damages(matrix cracking and delamination) were found at three impact tests, but the measured signals agreed well with the simulated sensor signals based on the linear relationship between the impact forces and the PVDF film sensor signals. And the inverse technique was applied to reconstruct the impact forces using the PVDF film sensor signals. Most of reconstructed impact forces had good agreement with the measured forces. The comparison results showed that the local damage due. to low-velocity impact didn't disturb the global impact responses of composite laminates and the reconstruction of impact forces from PVDF sensor signals wasn't affected by the local damage.
In this paper, finite element analysis and real time monitoring experimental work using FBG sensor were carried out for analyzing structural integrity of a Type IV hydrogen pressure vessel under impact loading condition. By using finite element analysis with the ply based modeling technique, sensor insertion points and pressure condition were suggested. Tensile test with an angle ply specimen was conducted for getting the reliability of FBG sensor insertion method. After fabricating the vessel, total five times pressurization fatigue tests were conducted (Non-impact pressurization: 1, After impact pressurization: 4). Experimental results revealed that filling cycle time was gradually increased and filling gradient was decreased when the vessel experienced impact.

The piezoelectric thin film(PVDF: polyvinylidene fluoride) sensors having good dynamic sensing charachteristics can be used to monitor low vwlocit impact on composite structures. The impact response function for composite sandwich beam was derved. The impact tests at low energy without inducing damage were performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The measured signals of PVDF sensors attached on the surface of the beam agreed well with the simulated signals. And the inverse technique was applied to reconstruct the impact forces from the PVDF sensor signals. Most of reconstructed impact forces showed good agreement with the measured forces. The comparison results showed that the piezoelectric thin film sensor can be used to monitor the low velocity impact on composite sandwich structures.

A time-frequency analysis method was developed to analyze the dispersive waves caused by impact loads in structural members such as beams and plates. Stress waves generated by ball drop and pencil lead break were recorded by ultrasonic transducers and acoustic emission (AE) sensors. Wavelet transform (WT) using Gabor function was employed to analyze the dispersive waves in the time-frequency domain, and then to find the arrival time of the waves as a function of frequency. The measured group velocities in the beam and the plate were compared with the predictions based on the Timoshenko beam theory and Rayleigh-Lamb frequency equations, respectively. The agreements were found to be very good.

Various monitoring sensors are used to predict and detect structural damage. Smart sensors, such as glass-fiber sensors, PZT, and MEMS, among others, have replaced traditional sensors. They are now being used in many areas. This study aims to predict the damage by measuring the PZT voltage attached on the specimen by the applied impact load. In the experiment to detect damages in beam connection, simple $H-400{\times}200{\times}8{\times}13$ beams were spliced with bolts. The results of FFT between PZT sensor and accelrometer were compared to measure the sensitivity of the PZT sensor. The damage to the beam was presumed by loosening the bolt, and then the damage measurement was accompanied. Secondly, a steel $PL600{\times}65{\times}5.8$ plate beam was fabricated for the purpose of experimenting on damage measurement. Impact loading test on three different locations was carried out. Damage width varied between 6~42mm on both sides by cutting, using a steel saw. The ratio of frequencies before and after the damage was computed to quantify the damage level by using FFT, and the change in mode pattern with the increased damage was investigated to measure the damage.
