  • Propellant tank pressurizing gas injector is used in the pressurization system of liquid propellant rocket to reduce incoming gas velocity and distribute the gas in the tank. Temperature distribution in the propellant tank ullage is varied according to the gas injector shape, and it has influence on the required pressurant gas and thermal phenomena in the tank. In this paper, diffuser type gas injector was studied to make the ullage have stratified temperature distribution. Injected gas flow at the outlet of prototype diffuser was visulized using particle image velocimetry method and it was compared with the results of calculation. Calculation was well agreed with measurement and was used as an inlet condition of propellant tank ullage calculation.

  • As the interest of environment was increased recently, the environment friendly propellants are required in space community, The hydrogen peroxide is the most suitable propellant for this because it requires very low development cost and has very low environmental impact. In this paper the chemical characteristics, advantage/disadvantage as a propellant, historical applications and recent developments were discussed.

  • The propellant mixer for charging of solid rocket motors is one of the most important equipments. For the propellant mixer is export control item, it's hard to purchase it directly from abroad. The Mixer was developed locally to overcome export control which precludes us from import. This paper includes the introduction for general mixers and the process of mixer development progressed by LIGNex1. Finally, The mixer is verified the performance using measurements of clearance between blade-blade and blade-bowl and flow simulation with ADINA.

  • In this study, we developed a method to predict/analyze the performance of a dual thrust rocket motor that has 2 kinds propellant charged in axial direction. When transitioning from the booster to the suspender stage, a transient phenomenon related to performance occurred at the interface. The causes and characteristics of the transient phenomenon were investigated by comparing them with the results of the combustion test. It was confirmed that the performance transient phenomenon is sensitively generated not only by the shape design between the propellants with different properties of the propellant, but also by errors in manufacturing due to the propellant curing shrinkage.

  • In this study, AP added propellant has been proposed as a method of enhancing the low specific impulse performance found for staged hybrid rocket engine. Experimental tests were carried out to analyze and evaluate the effect of AP added propellant on specific impulse performance as well as fuel-rich combustion characteristics in a staged hybrid rocket engine. Upper limit of AP content in propellant was set to be 15 wt% to maintain the hybrid rocket engine advantages. As a result, 15 wt% AP added propellant showed 3% higher specific impulse performance compared to 0 wt% AP added propellant. Moreover, AP addition proved to offer less injected oxidizer mass flow, less O/F variation, and less combustion pressure while producing fuel-rich gas of the same combustion temperature. Future studies will carry out more combustion tests with metal additives to further enhance specific impulse.

  • Several propellants were investigated experimentally for ignition characteristics in subatmospheric pressure. The threshold ignition pressure was 4 psia for HTPB/AP composite propellant. The partial replacement of AP in HTPB/AP propellant by $5{\sim}l5%$ of HMX, HNIW showed that the improvements in ignition delay was over 50% and the threshold pressure was below 0.4 psia. This appears to be due to the characteristics of HMX and HNIW exothermic dissociated at the temperature(${\sim}220^{\circ}C$) love. than that of AP. The ignition substance $B/KNO_3$ was coated thinly on the propellant surface for better ignition performance. As a result, ignition delay time of 15% was improved. NC is applied to $B/KNO_3$ ignition substance as a secondary binder and $NC-B/KNO_3$ suspension solution is coated to the propellant surface.

  • The review of the liquid propellant rocket engine is presented. The combustion instabilities which were discovered on solid and liquid propellant rocket engines in 1930, have occurred on propulsion devices, such as gas turbine, ramjet, scramjet and rocket, and thus a study on the combustion instability became necessary. However, this problem has not been solved yet. Therefore, we investigated causes and mechanisms of the combustion instability and surveyed the efforts of solving combustion instability in various countries for developing stable liquid propellant rocket engines.

  • It is observed that chemical characteristics of HTPB(Hydroxyl Terminated Polybutadiene) binder such as OH index, molecular weight and functionality and so on, can be different with synthetic batch, which can affect curing reaction of binder in itself or propellant. Finally this reaction can also affect mechanical properties of propellant. And the results suggest that proper degree of curing reaction is necessary to obtain better mechanical properties of propellant.

  • To control spacecraft including satellite, we should understand precisely the performance of propulsion system and the program logic with appropriate format for satellite operations. In this study, the thruster performance functions was generated by using the best curve fitting for performance data from bi-propellant thrusters. Detailed thruster performance data are, in general, company proprietary information, therefore real firing tests were performed to understand the basic characteristics of the performance curve. Experimental rocket motor utilize liquid oxygen and kerosine as propellant and designed average thrust was 100 pound.

  • The thermal decomposition rate of ammonium perchlorate with 3% of yellow iron oxide, FeOOH was found to be much faster than with red iron oxide, $Fe_2O_3$. By applying yellow and red iron oxide as a burning rate modifier to HTPB/AP propellant, burning rate of the HTPB/AP propellant with yellow iron oxide was shown to be 10 ~ 25% faster than with red iron oxide. There was no special difference in viscosity and hardness buildup of yellow and red oxide added HTPB/AP formulations.
