  • Nonlinear acoustic damping of a half-wave acoustic resonator in a rocket combustor is investigated numerically adopting a nonlinear acoustic analysis. First, in a baseline chamber without any resonators, acoustic behavior is investigated over the wide range of acoustic amplitude from 80 dB to 150 dB. Damping factor increases nonlinearly with acoustic amplitude and nonlinearity becomes appreciable at acoustic amplitude above 125 dB. Next, damping effect of a half-wave resonator is investigated. It is found that nonlinear acoustic excitation does not affect optimum tuning condition of the resonator, which is derived from linear acoustics. A half-wave resonator is effective even for acoustic damping of high-amplitude pressure oscillation, but its function of acoustic damper is relatively weakened compared with the case of linear acoustic excitation.

  • To understand the each performance parameter correlation of flight type liquid-propellant rocket engine for KSR-III(Korea Sounding Rocket-III), the analysis of engine stand-alone combustion test results was carried out. Considering the variation of ablative material combustion chamber caused by erosion, linear regression analysis that ignores oxidizer/fuel ratio effect and two-variable 2nd-order polynomial regression analysis that considers oxidizer/fuel ratio change were performed. It can be described that linear regression analysis is simple and very practical method, and can predict the performance within 1% error inside analyzed region. And two-variable 2nd-order polynomial regression analysis can predict with very high accuracy inside region and shows that KSR-III engine's optimum oxidizer/fuel ratio for thrust(or specific impulse) is 2.22 and that for combustion chamber pressure(or characteristic velocity) is 2.17.

  • A genetic algorithm (GA) has been employed to optimize the major design variables of the liquid rocket engine. Mass flow rate to the main thrust chamber, mass flow rate to the gas generator and chamber pressure have been selected as design variables. The target engine is the open gas generator cycle using the LO2/RP-1 propellant. The objective function of design optimization is to maximize the specific impulse with condition of energy balance between the pump and the turbine. The properties of the combustion chamber have been obtained from CEA2. Pump & turbine efficiencies and properties of the gas generator have been modeled mathematically from reference data. The result shows 3~4% errors for the specific impulse and 2~6% errors for the pump power of the gas generator cycle compared to references.

  • A linear acoustic analysis has been performed to elucidate damping characteristics of acoustic cavities in a liquid rocket combustor. Results have shown that resonant frequencies of acoustic cavity obtained by classical theoretic approach and by the present linear analysis are somewhat different with each other. This difference is attributed to the limitation of the simplified classical theory. To quantify the damping characteristics, acoustic impedance has been introduced and resultant absorption coefficient and conductance have been evaluated. Satisfactory agreement has been achieved with previous experiment. Finally the design procedure for an optimal tuning of acoustic cavity has been established.

  • Acoustic damping induced by gap width between baffled injectors is investigated numerically, which are installed to suppress pressure oscillations in a model rocket combustor. The previous work reported that the baffled injectors show larger acoustic damping with the gap width between injectors. It is simulated numerically and its mechanism is examined. Damping factors are calculated as a function of gap width and it is found that the optimum gap is 0.1 mm or so. For understanding of the improved damping induced by the gap, dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy and vorticity are calculated as a function of the gap. Both parameters have their maximum values at the specific gap and especially, the dissipation rate has the same profile as that of damping factor. It verifies that the improved damping made by the gap is attributed to the increased acoustic-energy dissipation.

  • A modified VIStA (vortex inertial staged air) burner was developed and used in a once-through-type boiler. For safety, the combustion in this burner is of the non-premixed type. An air damper is installed to control the distribution of air to each combustion chamber. The effects of the air-fuel ratio and air distribution on NOx formation were investigated. The newly modified VIStA burner gives NOx reduction effect by maximum 20% in the combustion chamber of a boiler, while it yields more uniform flame than the conventional burner.

  • This research carried out a 3-dimensional simulation using computerized fluid dynamics (CFD) for the flow characteristics, temperature distribution, velocity distribution and residence time, etc. in a reactor in order to derive the optimal combustion conditions of an innovative combustion system. The area-weighted average temperature of the outlet of a furnace during combustion at a condition of fuel input rate 1.5 ton/hr, residence time 1.25 sec and air/fuel ratio 2.1 was $1,077^{\circ}C$, which is a suitable temperature for energy recovery and treatment of air pollutants. Exhaust gas is discharged through a duct at a 40~50 m/s maximum speed along strong vortexes at the center of a combustion chamber, so strong turbulence is created at the center of a combustion chamber to enhance the combustion speed and combustion efficiency. In this system, the optimum operation conditions to prevent incomplete combustion and suppress the formation of thermal NOx were air/fuel ratio 1.9~2.1 and fuel input rate 1.25~1.5 ton/hr.
