In collaborative recommendation two models are generally used: the user model and the article model. A user model learns correlation between users preferences and recommends an article based on other users preferences for the article. Similarly, an article model learns correlation between preferences for articles and recommends an article based on the target user's preference for other articles. In this paper, we investigates various combination methods of the user model and the article model for better recommendation performance. They include simple sequential and parallel methods, perceptron, multi-layer perceptron, fuzzy rules, and BKS. We adopt the multi-layer perceptron for training each of the user and article models. The multi-layer perceptron has several advantages over other methods such as the nearest neighbor method and the association rule method. It can learn weights between correlated items and it can handle easily both of symbolic and numeric data. The combined models outperform any of the basic models and our experiments show that the multi-layer perceptron is the most efficient combination method among them.
In this paper, we propose a novel face recognition(FR) method that takes advantage of combining weighted deep local features extracted from multiple Deep Convolutional Neural Networks(DCNNs) learned with a set of facial local regions. In the proposed method, the so-called weighed deep local features are generated from multiple DCNNs each trained with a particular face local region and the corresponding weight represents the importance of local region in terms of improving FR performance. Our weighted deep local features are applied to Joint Bayesian metric learning in conjunction with Nearest Neighbor(NN) Classifier for the purpose of FR. Systematic and comparative experiments show that our proposed method is robust to variations in pose, illumination, and expression. Also, experimental results demonstrate that our method is feasible for improving face recognition performance.
Numerous statistical and machine learning techniques have been studied for automatic text classification. However, because they train the classifiers using only feature vectors of documents, ambiguity between two possible categories significantly degrades precision of classification. To remedy the drawback, we propose a new method which incorporates relationship information of categories into extant classifiers. In this paper, we first perform the document classification using the k-NN classifier which is generally known for relatively good performance in spite of its simplicity. We employ the relationship information from an object-based thesaurus to reduce the ambiguity. By referencing various relationships in the thesaurus corresponding to the structured categories, the precision of k-NN classification is drastically improved, removing the ambiguity. Experiment result shows that this method achieves the precision up to 13.86% over the k-NN classification, preserving its recall.

Collaborative filtering is a method to predict preference items of a user based on the evaluations of items provided by others with similar preferences. Collaborative filtering helps general people make smart decisions in today's information society where information can be easily accumulated and analyzed. We designed, implemented, and evaluated a course recommendation system experimentally. This system can help university students choose courses they prefer to. Firstly, the system needs to collect the course preferences from students and store in a database. Users showing similar preference patterns are considered into similar groups. We use Pearson correlation as a similarity measure. We select K-nearest students to predict the unknown preferences of the student and provide a ranked list of courses based on the course preferences of K-nearest students. We evaluated the accuracy of the recommendation by computing the mean absolute errors of predictions using a survey on the course preferences of students.

Automobiles have long been an essential part of daily life, but the social costs of car traffic accidents exceed 9% of the national budget of Korea. Hence, it is necessary to establish prevention and response system for car traffic accidents. In order to present a model that can classify and predict the degree of injury in car traffic accidents, we used big data analysis techniques of K-nearest neighbor, logistic regression analysis, naive bayes classifier, decision tree, and ensemble algorithm. The performances of the models were analyzed by using the data on the nationwide traffic accidents over the past three years. In particular, considering the difference in the number of data among the respective injury severity levels, we used down-sampling methods for the group with a large number of samples to enhance the accuracy of the classification of the models and then verified the statistical significance of the models using ANOVA.

Most face recognition systems are based on 2D images and applied in many applications. However, it is difficult to recognize a face when the pose varies severely. Therefore, head pose estimation is an inevitable procedure to improve recognition rate when a face is not frontal. In this paper, we propose a novel head pose estimation algorithm for 3D face recognition. Given the 3D range image of an unknown face as an input, we automatically extract facial feature points based on the face curvature. We propose an Error Compensated Singular Value Decomposition (EC-SVD) method based on the extracted facial feature points. We obtain the initial rotation angle based on the SVD method, and perform a refinement procedure to compensate for remained errors. The proposed algorithm is performed by exploiting the extracted facial features in the normaized 3D face space. In addition, we propose a 3D nearest neighbor classifier in order to select face candidates for 3D face recognition. From simulation results, we proved the efficiency and validity of the proposed algorithm.
Studies on predicting arrhythmia using machine learning have been actively conducted with increasing number of arrhythmia patients. Existing studies have predicted arrhythmia based on multivariate data of feature variables extracted from RR interval data at a specific time point. In this study, we consider that the pattern of the heart state changes with time can be important information for the arrhythmia prediction. Therefore, we investigate the usefulness of predicting the arrhythmia with multivariate time series data obtained by extracting and accumulating the multivariate vectors of the feature variables at various time points. When considering 1-nearest neighbor classification method and its ensemble for comparison, it is confirmed that the multivariate time series data based method can have better classification performance than the multivariate data based method if we select an appropriate time series distance function.

In pattern recognition and machine learning society, classification has been a classical problem and the most widely researched area. Adaptive boosting also known as Adaboost has been successfully applied to binary classification problems. It is a kind of boosting algorithm capable of constructing a strong classifier through a weighted combination of weak classifiers. On the other hand, the PCA and LDA algorithms are the most popular linear feature extraction methods used mainly for dimensionality reduction. In this paper, the combination of Adaboost and feature extraction methods is proposed for efficient classification of two class data. Conventionally, in classification problems, the roles of feature extraction and classification have been distinct, i.e., a feature extraction method and a classifier are applied sequentially to classify input variable into several categories. In this paper, these two steps are combined into one resulting in a good classification performance. More specifically, each projection vector is treated as a weak classifier in Adaboost algorithm to constitute a strong classifier for binary classification problems. The proposed algorithm is applied to UCI dataset and FRGC dataset and showed better recognition rates than sequential application of feature extraction and classification methods.

In recent years, Shield TBM construction has been continuously increasing in domestic tunnels. The main excavation tool in the shield TBM construction is a disc cutter which naturally wears during the excavation process and significantly degrades the excavation efficiency. Therefore, it is important to know the appropriate time of the disc cutter replacement. In this study, it is proposed a predictive model that can determine yes/no of disc cutter replacement using machine learning algorithm. To do this, the shield TBM machine data which is highly correlated to the disc cutter wears and the disc cutter replacement from the shield TBM field which is already constructed are used as the input data in the model. Also, the algorithms used in the study were the support vector machine, k-nearest neighbor algorithm, and decision tree algorithm are all classification methods used in machine learning. In order to construct an optimal predictive model and to evaluate the performance of the model, the classification performance evaluation index was compared and analyzed.
In this paper, we develop interactive content services for preventing depression of users through an intelligent Internet of Things(IoT) mirror system. For interactive content services, an IoT mirror device measures attention and meditation data from an EEG headset device and also measures facial expression data such as "sad", "angery", "disgust", "neutral", " happy", and "surprise" classified by a multi-layer perceptron algorithm through an webcam. Then, it sends the measured data to an oneM2M-compliant IoT server. Based on the collected data in the IoT server, a machine learning model is built to classify three levels of depression (RED, YELLOW, and GREEN) given by a proposed merge labeling method. It was verified that the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) model could achieve about 93% of accuracy by experimental results. In addition, according to the classified level, a social network service agent sent a corresponding alert message to the family, friends and social workers. Thus, we were able to provide an interactive content service between users and caregivers.
