Determination of Representative Long-term Water Quality Parameters of the Streams in Estuarine Lake (하구호 유입하천의 유역특성에 따른 장기 대표 수질절정)

  • This study was undertaken to obtain design concentrations for the natural system treating stream water flowing into estuarine lake(Sapgyo). This lake has three major, so called, national-class streams: one is Gokgyo flowing through two medium-size municipal areas and the others are Muhan and Sapgyo placed in mostly rural area nested with some small towns. The results of three year's investigation showed big changes in water quality during the period between dry and wet seasons. Nitrogen concentration usually decreases as the flow rate increases. The change of phosphorus concentration in Gokgyo was the same pattern as nitrogen, but in other two streams it was inversely related with flow rates. This is probably due to the chemical property of the particles washed out from the different stream basins during wet season. It was found that about 40 to 60% of the total nitrogen are in soluble form and on average, 35% of the total phosphorus consists of dissolved-P. Representative concentration of these streams has to be separately determined based on dry and wet season. TDS and SS could be indicating parameters useful to depict and characterize a change of water quality with respect to flow rate because their measurement is easy and also includes a small analytical error. TDS values measured during dry season are related with high nitrogen concentration while during wet season, SS values effectively reflect a high concentration of phosphorus. For design purpose, cumulative concentration distribution graph presented in this paper can be directly or indirectly applied to other streams through a brief comparative and verificative study.

The Limnological Survey of Lagoons in the Eastern Coast of Korea (1): Lake Chungcho (동해안 석호의 육수학적 조사(1): 청초호)

  • Water quality and Pollution state of Lake Chungcho were evaluated during three years from 1998 to 2000. We surveyed physicochemical parameters, and TSI (trophic state index) was calculated using TP, Chl. a, and SD (secchi disc transparency) data of growing season average. Water samples were collected bimonthly except freezing season. During the study period, total annual precipitation in 1998, 1999 and 2000 year was 1,797,1,722 and 1,345 mm, respectively. Salinity and conductivity were high($29.3{\pm}5.5\;ppt$, and $45,105{\pm}7,585\;{\mu}S/cm$) then other lagoons in the Eastern Coast of Korea. Chemocline was formed by salinity at $0.5{\sim}1.5\;m$ water depth. As a result of this, DO concentration of hypolimnion was below $3.0\;mgO_2/L$. Especially, when intense chemocline was formed, temperature of hypolimnion was higher than epilimnion. Secchi disc transparency, chlorophyll a, and COD were $1.8{\pm}0.3\;m$, $15.7{\pm}20.7\;mg/m^3$, and $3.1{\pm}0.8\;mgO_2/L$, respectively. Most of TN/TP ratios below 20, but concentration of TN and TP was high. Values of TSI ranged between 59 and 77, indicating a eutrophic condition in this system.

Effects of Floating and Submerged Plants on Important Water Environments of Wetland (부유식물과 침수식물이 습지의 주요 수 환경에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, two types of wetland plants, Eichhornia crassipes (a floating plant) and Ceratophyllum demersum (a submerged plant) were introduced to wetland mesocosms to understand how the water properties of wetlands such as pH, dissolved oxygen content, water temperature, oxidation reduction potential, and nutrient concentrations are affected by different types of wetland plant. The floating plant lives on the water surface and can block light penetration; it exhibited the lowest water temperature and temperature difference between lower and upper layers. After the addition of contaminants, the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration decreased abruptly but recovered continuously in all mesocosms; especially the submerged plants, which photosynthesize in water, showed the largest increases in DO and diel periodicity DO, as well as in pH value. The oxidation-reduction potential in both water and sediment were affected by the presence of wetland plants and plant type and the results suggest that various aspects of wetland biogeochemistry are affected by the presence and type of wetland plants. The total nitrogen and phosphorous concentrations in water decreased in the following order: Water only < Water + Soil < Floating Plants < Submerged Plants. Although both floating and submerged plants can control algal concentrations, the effect was more prominent for floating plants.

Development and Field Application of an Amphibious Scrubbing/Suction Dredging Machine with Cylindrical Rotating Brush and Turbidity Barrier (회전브러쉬와 혼탁방지막을 활용한 수륙양용형 Scrub/흡입 준설장치의 개발과 현장적용)

  • An amphibious scrubbing/suction dredging machine with cylindrical rotating brush, housing, and turbidity barrier was newly-developed to remove both sediments with about 10 cm thickness and periphyton attached on various structures in urban water-circulating systems through the scrubbing, suction, and dredging processes. Based on the field application and long-term monitoring, the increase in both suspended solids (SS) and turbidity of water during the scrubbing, suction, and dredging processes was negligible (p>0.05). In some cases, the turbidity of water initially increased, however, the turbidity was stabilized within 20 minutes from the start of dredging processes. The concentration changes in TN and TP of water were not statistically different (p>0.05) before and after the scrubbing, suction, and dredging processes, indicating that benthic nutrients released from sediments were not significantly diffused, and were not supposed to cause significant water pollution. Also, water treatment facilities along with an amphibious scrubbing/suction dredging machine could be more effective since the removal of contaminant loadings through the scrubbing, suction, and dredging processes was much greater than that through simple coagulation/precipitation processes. Finally, GPS-based realtime tracking and operation program have been developed and applied in various urban water-circulating systems, and development of driver cooperative autonomous driving system is in progress to eliminate the need for manual driving of an amphibious scrubbing/suction dredging machine.

Eutrophication in the Downstream of Nakdong River (낙동강 하류역의 부영양화현상에 관한 연구)

  • A study on eutrophication in the downstream of the Nakdong River was conducted from October 1983 to September 1984. Nutrients concentration of the samples in this area was usually high and the nitrogen ratio to the phosphorus was as very high as $63.5{\sim}119.6$. The concentration of nutrients was in the range of $0.22{\sim}173{\mu}g-at/l$ for ammonia nitrogen, $26.7{\sim}187{\mu}g-at/l$ for nitrate nitrogen, $1.07{\sim}8.22{\mu}g-at/l$ for nitrite nitrogen, $58.7{\sim}231{\mu}g-at/l$ for total inorganic nitrogen and $0.44{\sim}4.43{\mu}g-at/l$ for phosphate phosphorus. The concentration of chlorophyll-a was in the range of $1.8{\sim}75.2\;mg/m^3$. Correlationship between concentration of nutrients and chlorophyll-a was not found. The concentrations of total suspended solid were in the range of $10.7{\sim}45.9\;ppm$, and $16.2{\sim}35.2\%$ of the total suspended solid was consisted of volatile suspended solid. According to the state of lacustrine nutrition, the state of the downstream of Nakdong River was equivalent to the eutrophication state in term of chlorophyll-a and inorganic nitrogen, and mid-nutritional state in term of phosphate.

Pollution Characteristics and Loading Flux of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAHs) in Riverine Waters of Jinhae Bay, Korea (진해만 하천에서 다환방향족탄화수소 유입부하량과 오염특성)

  • PAHs(Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) compounds may enter into the marine environment in a number of ways, and PAHs in coastal area and estuary adjacent to urban area and industrial activities region are mainly introduced into marine environment via atmosphere or river. The field surveys to evaluate the pollution of PAHs in rivers of Jinhae bay were carried out in August, 2008. The water samples collected from seven main rivers and Deokdong WWTP(Waste water Treatment Plant) which lead to Jinhae bay. 16 PAHs which had been selected as priority pollutants by EPA were analyzed. The range and mean of dissolved Total PAHs concentrations in the rivers and Duckdong WWTP that lead to Jinhae bay were shown to be 9.79~128.25(mean 36.94)ng/L, while the range and mean of Total PAHs concentrations in SPM(Suspended Particulate Matter) were shown to be 1,81434~8,893.37(mean 4,657.73)${\mu}g$/kg dry wt. The dissolved Total PAHs and Total PAHs in SPM were shown to be high concentrations in the Semhocheon which leads to Masan bay that is the most polluted area of Jinhae bay, while those were shown to be low concentrations at rivers which lead to the west area of the bay. The ranges and means of the loading fluxes from rivers and Duckdong WWTP were calculated at 0.06~12.05(mean 1.86)g/day for dissolved Total PAHs and at 0.12~16.00(mean 2.41)g/day tor Total PAH in SPM. The loading flux of Total PAHs from Duckdong WWTP was shown to be the greatest, occupying more than 80% of Total loading flux from all rivers and WWTP to Jinhae bay. The composition patterns of PAHs compound by the number of benzene ring between dissolved PAHs and PAHs of SPM were different each other. Low molecuar weight PAHs of dissoloved compounds were in high concentration, while high molecular weight PAHs of SPM were in high concentration. These results were due to physical and chemical characteristics of PAHs and were similar to those of other studies. The total PAHs concentrations of dissolved and SPM in this study are lower than those of other studies. The extent of PAHs pollution appeared to be not serious in reverine waters of Jinhae bay.

Calculation of Effective of Rainwater Collection Device in Small Streams (소류천 빗물 집수 장치의 집수 성능 효과 분석)

  • 소류천 빗물 집수 장치는 노지 밭작물의 관개용수 확보를 위해 상시 흐름이 있거나, 간헐적으로 유출이 발생하는 산간 소류천 또는 배수로에서 빗물을 집수하기 위한 장치이다. 본 연구는 빗물 집수 장치의 집수 능력을 확인하기 위해 인공 수로 시험 장치를 이용한 요인시험을 실시하였으며. 장수군 노하리 산간지의 소류천에 설치하고 2015년 8월 5일부터 11월 15일까지 유출량 및 집수량 그리고 강우량을 관측하였다. 인공 수로 시험 장치를 이용하여 확인한 빗물 집수 장치의 최대 집수 가능량은 약 0.0022 ton/sec(130 L/분)로 나타났다. 빗물 집수 장치는 강우시에만 유출이 발생하는 지점(P1)과 상시 유출이 발생하는 지점(P2)에 설치하였고, 연구기간동안 총 강우량은 334.5 mm가 발생하였다. P1 지점에서는 총 1,722 ton의 유출이 발생하였으며, 273 ton이 집수되었고, P2 지점에서는 총 7,984 ton의 유출이 발생하였고, 125 ton이 집수되었다. 총 유출량 기준 집수 효율은 P1과 P2에서 15.85%, 1.57%로 산정되었고, 최대 집수 가능량 (0.0022 ton/sec)을 기준으로 한 집수 효율도 17.64%와 2.12%로 비교적 낮게 나타났다. 현장에서 빗물과 함께 발생하는 토사 및 부유물질 등에 의한 유입부 막힘이 집수 효율을 낮추는 주요 원인으로 분석되었다. 그러나, 월평균 총집수량은 약 30 ton 이상의 빗물을 저장할 수 있는 것으로 평가되어, 단기적인 물부족을 해소할 수 있는 대안으로 활용 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Seasonal Variation of the Quantity and Quality of Seston as Diet Available to Suspension-Feeders in Gosung and Kangjin Bays of Korea (고성만과 강진만에서 현탁물 섭식자에 유용한 입자물질 양과 질의 계절 변동)

  • Seasonal variation of the elemental and biochemical composition of the suspended particulate matter (SPM) was investigated in terms of quantity and quality of diets for suspension feeders from July 1999 to August 2000 in two coastal bay systems of Gosung and Kangjin Bays in Korea. No clear patterns in the seasonal variations of SPM concentration were found in these two bay systems. The results indicated that the seasonal variation of SPM could not be considered the variation of food available to suspension-feeders. The simultaneous peaks in chlorophyll a and biochemical components in summer indicated that the quantity of the particulate organic matter primarily depended on phytoplankton productivity. However, no correlation between chlorophyll a and biochemical components [particulate protein (PPr), carbohydrate (PCHO) and lipid] were found, indicating that other processes might also contribute to the particulate organic matter in the period when the phytoplankton biomass was low. High C: Chl a and C:N, and carbohydrate peaks during the autumn to spring period suggested that resuspension of surface sediments was a probable process to supply the particulate organic matter. The food material, represented by summing up the total quantity of three biochemical components, was highest in spring with minor peaks during the period from autumn to the next spring, The food index, calculated as the ratio of food material to total SPM, did not generally exceed $6\%$ with short peaks during the year. Therefore, nutritional quality of SPM in the bays are relatively poor than in other more productive coastal waters in the world. Our results confirm that the measurement of a single chemical variable cannot describe fully the nutritive value of the seston available to suspension-feeders as previously proposed, and the biochemical composition of SPM can provide effective information on its origin and nutritive Quality.

  • The effects that the geo-textile mulching sheet has influenced on the runoff-water, suspended solid, sediment yield and vegetation growth are as follows in artificial slope 1. The flora of plots was composed 12 families, 21 genera, 20 species, 2 varieties, total 22 taxa. 2. The geo-textile mulching sheet is effective on increasing of introduced vegetation population, number of species and vegetation coverage, but just only with the mulching sheet it shows limit of was somewhat difficult to expect the increase of the existence ratio. 3. The amount of runoff-water increased in proportion to rainfall and at mulched plots were about 1/15.5 as decreased as that of un-mulched plots. 4. The amount of suspended sediment increased in proportion to rainfall and at mulched plots were about 1/47 as decreased as that of un-mulched plots. 5. Also, the amount of sediment yield increased in proportion to rainfall and at mulched plots were about 1/151 as decreased as that of un-mulched plots. so, multi-function- filter is very effective on prevention of soil erosion.

Characteristics of Particle Size Distribution and Heavy Metal Concentration in Pavement Road Runoff (포장지역 강우유출수에서의 입자성물질의 입도 분포 및 중금속 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Objective of this study was to characterize the particle size distribution(PSD) and quantify the pollutant concentration in highway runoff. Runoff samples during two rainfall events at four road sites in Gyunggi-Do were collected and PSD and associated pollutant distribution was quantified. Also, rainfall amount, flow rate, and other pollutants in samples were analyzed. PSDs in each sample were analyzed and compared with temporal trends of other pollutants. High partial event mean concentrations(PEMC) of particulates were observed at the beginning of runoff and rapid decrease thereafter. Other pollution parameters such as turbidity, TSS, BOD, TN, and TP also have similar temporal runoff trend with the PEMC. Especially PEMC was well correlated with total suspended solids(TSS) and turbidity. Cu, Pb, Zn had high concentration both runoff and sediment. Heavy metals in sediment were strongly bound to fine particles that have the large surface area-to-volume ratios.
