  • This study was aimed to analyze the long-term fluctuation of water quality and phytoplankton dynamics of Paldang reservoir in Korea and to assess the relationship between algal bloom patterns and hydrological, limnological data. Diatoms in Paldang reservoir occurred continuously through the year. Blue- green algae occurred during the summer season (from June to Sept.), and the highest count was observed in July. Occurrence pattern of green algae was similar to that of blue-green algae. The rest of algae contained a lot of Cryptomonas spp. whose concentration was high from May to Aug. Dominant algal genera (>>7,000 cells $mL^{-1}$) in Paldang reservoir were Aulacoseira, Cyclotella, Microcystis, and Cryptomonas spp. Microcystis and Anabaena occurred during the summer season. Many different green algal genera were found in Paldang reservoir but their abundances were very low. There were some significant correlations (r>0.3, p<0.05) between algal taxa and water quality; diatoms and water temperature, TP:blue-green algae and water temperature, pH, DO saturation, COD, TP; green algae and water temperature, pH, DO saturation, COD, SS, TP. Furthermore, algal genera and water quality was significantly correlated (r>0.3, p<0.05) ; Aulacoseira and TN, TP; Anabaena and water temperature, DO saturation, COD, TP : Microcystisand water temperature, pH, DO saturation, TP; Coelastrum and COD, SS; Scenedesmus and water temperature, COD, TN, TP; Cryptomonas and DO saturation, TN. In Paldang reservoir, the water temperature had relatively big effect on blue-green algal bloom that was also dependant upon its hydrologic condition.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidative activity and cytotoxicity on human KB cell of extract from Rhododendron mucronulatum flower, and also to determine the contents of total polyphenol and flavonoid. The methanol extract of Rhododendron mucronulatum flower was fractionated with various solvents such as hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol and water. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of ethyl acetate fraction had stronger activity than other fractions. So, antioxidative substances of ethyl acetate fraction were crude purified by silica gel column chromatography. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of crude purified fraction 2 and 3 were more than 90% at 40 ppm. In the presence of $100{\mu}g/mL$, growth inhibition on human KB cell by WST-1 assay showed 81.2% in chloroform fraction and 74.6% in hexane fraction. The contents of total polyphenol and flavonoid of ethyl acetate traction were 32.70% and 20.30%, respectively, The antioxidative activity showed correlation with total polyphenol and flavonoid contents.

  • The flora of evergreen broad-leaved forest regions in the islands off the south & east seashore was undertaken three times between August to October, 1995. The total number of vascular plants surveyed in the studied areas were summarized as 434 taxa; 105 families 297 genera 380 species 49 varieties 1 subspecies and 4 formas. The vascular plants were classified as 56 taxa 32 families 53 genera 50 species 6 varieties in Mokdo, 92 taxa 47 families 80 genera 81 species 9 varieties and 2 forms in Mijo-ri, 68 taxa 47 families 65 genera 58 species 9 varieties and 1 forms in Mijodo, 57 taxa 39 families 52 genera 53 species 4 varieties in Kkamakseom, 124 taxa 59 families 105 genera 112 species 11 varieties 1 subspecies in Aedo, 90 taxa 46 families 75 genera 83 species 7 varieties in Sayangdo, 135 taxa 63 families 111 genera 147 species 13 varieties in Kumodo, 78 taxa 40 families 67 genera 69 species 9 varieties in Chudo, 142 taxa 67 families 113 genera 120 species 20 varieties and 2 forms in Mira-ri, 184 taxa 73 families 150 genera 160 species 24 varieties 1 subspecies in Maengseon-ni, and 196 taxa 79 families 156 genera 172 species 24 varieties 1 subspecies and 1 forms in Yesong-ni. Conservation measures of evergreen broad-leaved forests in the areas, at both the habitat and species levels, are urgently needed to mitigate against destructive human activities, such as unreasonable management and trampling.

  • This study examined pollution level of sediment in Sookchun lake, and studied dredging validity by examining phosphorous release characteristics on surface polluted soil. Total phosphorous, the principal cause of algal blooms, exceeded dredging assessment standards regarding Daechung lake (1.5 mg/g) at all points. Also at all points, total nitrogen exceeded the dredging assessment standard regarding Paldang Lake (1.1 mg/g), but fell short of the standard regarding Daechung lake (3.0 mg/g). Dredging zone was suggested in this study is Chuso water body (WS-6~WS-12) in Sookchun lake. In relation to sediment pollution levels measured at different depths, LOI tended to decrease as it became deeper. The concentrations of T-N varied depending upon the depth as well as points, but no regular pattern was observed. The depth and site did not significantly influence T-P. From the results of phosphorous release tests, it was shown that total phosphorous release flux was calculated to be $7.2{\sim}15.4mg/m^2/d$ for anaerobic condition, $0.5{\sim}2.0mg/m^2/d$ for aerobic condition and $2.0{\sim}4.1mg/m^2/d$ for facultative condition. Release flux and T-P concentration of surface sediments had positive correlation ($R^2$ 0.7871). And The corelation between release flux and DO condition in reactor had strong negative correlation ($R^2$ 0.8824).
