  • Research was initiated to evaluate cool-season grass (CSG) overseeding effects on coverage and species transition in Korean lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) and to determine CSGs and their seeding rate for a practical overseeding. Treatments were comprised of Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.), perennial ryegrass (PR, Lolium perenne L.), tall fescue (TF, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and their mixtures. Significant differences were observed in turfgrass coverage and species transition. Since overseeding, the coverage was highest in PR, followed by TF and lowest in KB. The highest coverage in polystand was associated with Mixture IV (TF 50 + PR 50) at a seeding rate of $150gm^{-2}$ which had highest PR and TF, but without KB. Regarding turfgrass transition, zoysiagrass recovery continued to come back up to 80% from late March. But it reduced after early October. Zoysiagrass in monostand was greatest in KB and lowest in TF, but variable in polystand. For the fast and great coverage in winter, it would be the best to apply with PR at $100gm^{-2}$ and equal combination of PR and TF by 1/2 in the mixture at $150gm^{-2}$. For the smooth spring transition to zoysiagrass, however, KB application at $50gm^{-2}$ is recommended.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of the different cutting height on the changes of nonstructural carbohydrate contents, winter survival, spring yields of Italian ryegrass, tall fescue and pernennial ryegrass swards. It was carried out on the experimental field of Livestock Experiment Station, in Suweon, from Sept. 1986 to May 1987. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The changes in soil surface temperature of plots were slightly appeared among grasses. But not appeared with cutting heights. 2. Nonstructural carbohydrate contents of three grasses until wintering showed much more in line with unclipped, 15 cm cutting and 6 cm cutting height. Among three grasses, Italian ryegrass was highest and tall fescue was lowest. Otherwise, wintering survival was not show the difference among grasses and cutting heights. 3. The green yields was much more producted in line with Iralian ryegrass, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue. But in dry matter yields, it was not significantly different among grasses and cutting heights.

  • Neurllemomas of the tracheobroncheal tree are extremely rare. Most are located in the lower trachea, and cause chronic cough and wheezing. They usually have a very long natural history, causing symptoms only after they have attained a considerable size. Current treatment of primary intratracheal tumor is sugical removal. Recently, we experienced a case of primary intratracheal neurilemoma which was successfully treated by tracheal resection and anastomosis. We report this case with a brief review of literature.

  • Neurilemmoma is a benign tumor which arises generally from the Schwann's cells. It is a slowly growing tumor and treated as surgically. We experienced a case of neurilemmoma of the oropharynx in a 28-year-old female who had noticed a gradual swelling of the left side of the oropharynx with swallowing difficulty for 6 months. The tumor was removed successfully intra-orally under the general endotracheal anesthesia and verified pathologically as neurilemmoma.

  • Research was conducted to investigate germination and establishment characteristics of five fescue species. Alternative conditions of 8-hr light at $25^{\circ}C$ and 16-hr dark at $15^{\circ}C$ were applied. Significant differences were observed in seed germination power, germination speed and germination peak time. Germination power was 62.25% in CRF 'Audubon' to 96.75% in TF 'Olympic Gold'. It was greater with TF over FF, being TF > HF > SF > CF > CRF. Germination speed, measured as days to seed germination of 50% through 80%, was fastest with TF, medium with CF and HF, and slowest with CRF and SF, being TF > CF, HF > CRF, SF. Germination peak time was much faster with TF over FF. It ranged from 0.94 to 1.47 days with TF. But it varied with 2.80 to 12.36 days among FF species. The peak time was longer in order of HF, SF < CF < CRF. Considering germination power, germination speed and germination peak time, TF 'Arid III' was the best cultivar under alternative conditions, while CRF 'Audubon' the poorest. Overall establishment characteristics among Festuca species were even better with TF over FF in order of TF > CF, HF > SF > CRF.

  • Esophageal schwannoma is very rare and almost of all cases are diagnosed as esophageal submucosal tumor preoperatively. Final diagnosis is made by postoperative immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of the surgical specimen. We experienced two cases of esophageal submucosal tumor, one was 63 year old female suffering from three months of dysphagia and another was 39 year old female complaining of two months of intermittent dysphagia. Two esophageal tumors were completely removed by esophagectomy and enucleation through right thoracotomy respectively. Postoperative IHC staining demonstrated S-100 positive without mitotic figures and confirmative diagnosed was made as benign esopphageal schwannoma.

  • Malignant schwannoma is rare tumor which is derived from schwas cells or nerve sheath cells, and it is frequently associated with Von Rechlinghausen's disease. We experienced one case of malignant schwannoma on the right chest wall without Von Rechlinghausen's disease. Patient was 64-year-old man who presented painless palpable mass on the right lower -chest wall for about 2 months. On chest computed tomography, the mass which was 6$\times$6 cm in size and had central necrosis, involved 11th rib with destruction, invaded the diaphragm and displaced the kidney anteriorlly. He underwent on-bloc resection of the tumor and discharged without any problem after 20 days.

  • The germination and the nutrient culture tests in the growth chamber and pot experiment under two types of soil conditions were conducted to determine the selectivity of oxyfluorfen and chlormethoxynil in crops and weeds and for characterization of selective mode of action, the absorption study was also conducted with different absorption methods and application time using $^{14}C$-oxyfluorfen. Oxyfluorfen showed more growth inhibitory effects than chlormethoxynil. In the nutrient culture test, rice growth was greatly inhibited at 2-leaf stage than at 4-leaf stage, and the shoot parts were more inhibited than the root parts. By preemergence application of both herbicides, higher growth inhibition was observed in sandy loam soil than in clay loam soil. Absorption and translocation of $^{14}C$-oxyfluorfen were higher by foliar application than by root treatment, and selectivity of crops and weed species may be explained partly by the amount of absorption.

  • Purpose: To diagnose soft tissue tumor, such as lipoma and Schwannoma, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is sufficient in most cases. However, various characteristics are found in MRI images of Schwannoma, thus other type of tumors are often misdiagnosed as Schwannoma with MRI images. In this study, we evaluate the diagnostic value of specific MRI findings of Schwannoma. Materials and Methods: From January 2002 to May 2013, 104 patients who are suspected as Schwannoma rith MRI images are included in data, and the final diagnosis is confirmed with biopsy. Patients are divided into group 1 and group 2 who are confirmed as Schwannoma and other disease with biopsy, respectively. Results: 92 patients were diagnosed as Schwannoma (group 1) and 12 patients were diagnosed as other disease (group 2). We investigate the diagnostic value of specific MRI findings of Schwannoma. 41 patients of group 1 (45%) and 0 patients of group 2 (0%) showed target sign, 47 patients of group 1 (51%) and 2 patients of group 2 (17%) showed fascicular sign, 44 patients of group 1 (48%) and 5 patients of group 2 (42%) showed fat split sign, 28 patients of group 1 (30%) and 1 patients of group 2(9%) showed nerve entering and exiting sign, and 8 patients of group 1 (9%) and 6 patients of group 2 (50%) showed none of four specific findings on their MRI images. 52 patients of group 1 (57%) and 5 patients of group 2 (42%) have tumors on the pathway of nerve. Target sign could be considered as the best diagnostic value of the sign we investigate (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although specific MRI findings have powerful diagnostic value, patients are often misdiagnosed as Schwannoma with MRI findings. Therefore, if patients who are suspected as Schwannoma based on MRI findings have no target sign on their MRI images, we should consider the possibility of other disease.
