  • Acer tegmentosum is a tree used to treat various liver diseases in Korea. There have been some concern regarding the safety of Acer tegmentosum due to some toxic chemical compounds in its stems. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) was employed to develop a removing method of toxic compounds from Acer tegmentosum. The toxic compounds were effectively extracted with ethanol modified supercritical fluid $CO_2$. The optimum condition of SFE was 100 bar of pressure, $40^{\circ}C$ of extraction temperature, 3 mL/min of $CO_2$ flow rate, 0.2 mL/min of modifier (ethanol) flow rate.

  • Supercritical fluid extraction was explored as a method for removing lipids and bad odor from tuna viscera. Selected conditions of extraction pressure, time, temperature and sample size were evaluated for effective removal of lipids and bad odor, Supercritical carbon dioxide was used as a solvent and the extraction was performed at semi-batch flow type. The experimental conditions used in this work was the range of pressure from 1,500 psig to 2,000 psig, the temperature from $25^{\circ}C\;to\;40^{\circ}C$ and dried sample size from 0.2 mm to 1.0 mm. The main fatty acids extracted from tuna viscera were palmitic acid (16: 0) heptadecenoic acid (17: 1) oleic acid (18: 1) and docosahexaenoic acid (22: 6). Protein concentrate was obtained without deformation the optimum condition at $35^{\circ}C$, 1,800 psig and 0.25 mm of the size. In the concentrate after supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, the major amino acids were glutamic acid, leucine and lysine.

  • The extraction of taxol and baccatin III from the ground needles of Taxus cuspidata were carried out by using supercritical carbon dioxide with and without cosolvents such as ethylacetate and methanol at 300 bar and 313K. Taxol is a promising anticancer agent and baccatin III is a precursor of semisysthesis of taxol. The taxol and baccatin III contents in the extracts were determined by a HPLC. The highest yields of taxol and baccatin III could be obtained by the supercritical extraction with 3wt% methanol and ethylacetate, respectively, as cosolvents. It was also found that the selectivity of taxol and baccatin III were 0.117 and 1.245wt%, respectively, with 0.7wt% ethylacetate, which demonstrated that the selectivity of taxol and baccatin III were increased about 1.8 and 19 times than those of conventional organic solvent extraction.

  • Pine twigs with buds were cut into $2{\sim}3\;mm$ long pieces and about 18g was used for each experiment. Pressure and temperature ranges employed were $100{\sim}300\;bar$ and $35{\sim}55^{\circ}C$, respectively. Volatile compounds of extracts were isolated and identified by gas chromatography and mass selective detector. Twenty three compounds from the extracts were identified. Limonene and ${\beta}-pinene$ were found to be the major components with $32.6{\sim}43.4%$ being limonene. Extracts obtained by supercritical fluid extraction were lower in monoterpene and higher in oxygenated terpenoids than those by steam distillation and solvent extraction (SDE). Sensory evaluation showed that the pine flavor extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide was much better in quality than that of SDE. In conclusion, it was found out that supercritical fluid extraction can successfully be applied to extract high quality flavor from pine.

  • Supercritical carbon dioxide was used to remove coffee odors. The odor removal efficiency was tested with coffee drink prepared by the espresso extraction method. Five typical odors in coffee were analyzed with GC and these odors in deodorized coffee were compared to those in control. Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction conditions were optimized as 350 bar and 70$^{\circ}C$ because the solvating power of supercritical fluid is depend on the density which is determined by temperature and pressure. A modified head space method was applied to collect coffee odors in coffee drink prepared by the espresso extraction method. Odors generated in coffee drink made with deodorized coffee powder were reduced by 73% in total mass of typical five coffee odors.

  • Poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) has been used as biocompatible and biodegradable polymer in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and electronics. Micro-particles of PVP were produced using an aerosol solvent extraction system (ASES). Dichloromethane (DCM) and supercritical carbon dioxide were used as solvent and antisolvent, respectively. The mean diameter of the obtained polymer particles ranged from 0.184 to $0.249\;{\mu}m$. The relationship between particle size and initial drop size was also considered.
