  • The effect of latex particle size on rheological and electrical properties of latex-blended polystyrene (PS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites was investigated. Mono-dispersed PS particles synthesized either by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization or by dispersion polymerization were mixed with MWCNTs under ultrasonication, and freeze-dried to prepare the nanocomposites. As the MWCNT content increased, storage modulus, complex viscosity and electrical conductivity were substantially increased. The increase of storage modulus and complex viscosity was higher for larger PS particles. The effect of particle size on electrical properties was different depending on MWCNT content. With lower MWCNT content, the nanocomposite prepared by smaller PS particles showed higher electrical conductivity, but the opposite result was given as the content increased.

  • In this study, evaluation tests for cleaning performance of various cleaning agents and selection of optimal ultrasonic cleaning parameters were executed to develop an efficient cleaning process in remanufacturing of laser copy machine. Cleaning performance tests were executed with 8 cleaning agents (A~H) to remove the contaminants of oil-ink, toner particles, and shoe polish. Physical properties and foamability tests were also applied. For 3 types of contaminants, cleaning agent G showed superior cleaning performance compared to agent A which has being used at a remanufacturing of laser copy machine in Korea. With cleaning agents selected in pre-tests, ultrasonic cleaning tests were executed to remove real contaminants on the parts of used digital laser copy machine parts. Cleaning agent G at 28 kHz ultrasonic frequency showed faster cleaning performance compared to agent A and other frequencies. The productivity and economic efficiency in remanufacturing of laser copy machine are expected to increase by adapting agent G and 28 kHz frequency at ultrasonic cleaning process.

  • In this study, performances of two cleaning methods were analyzed and a cleaning system was designed to develop a cleaning process of electronic components to remanufacture old laser copy machine. First, plasma cleaning as a dry cleaning method was executed to test cleaning ability. In cleaning of printed circuit board (PCB) by plasma, some damages were found near the metal parts, and considering the productivity, this method was not adequate for the cleaning of electronic components. With 4 different cleaning agents, ultrasonic cleaning tests were executed to select an optimal cleaning agent, aqueous agents showed superior cleaning performance compared to semi-aqueous and non-aqueous agents. Cleaning with aqueous cleaning agent A and 28 kHz ultrasonic frequency can be completed in 30 sec to 1 min. Finally, an ultrasonic cleaning system was constructed based on the pre-test results. Optimal cleaning conditions of 40 kHz and $50^{\circ}C$ were found in the field test. The productivity and economic efficiency in remanufacturing of laser copy machine are expected to increase by adapting developed ultrasonic cleaning system.

  • This paper presents the investigation of the propagation behavior of bulk longitudinal waves generated by an ultrafast laser system in thin films. A train of femtosecond laser pulses was focused onto the surface of a 150-nm thick metallic (chromium or aluminum) film on a silicon substrate to excite elastic waves, and the change in thermoreflectance at the spot was monitored to detect the arrival of echoes from the film/substrate interface. The experimental results show that the film material characteristics such as the wave velocity and Young's modulus can be evaluated through curve-fitting in numerical solutions. The material properties of nanoscale thin films are difficult to measure using conventional techniques. Therefore, this research provides an effective method for the nondestructive characterization of nanomaterials.

  • This paper describes the acoustic emission measurement method to diagnose GIS for particles. We measured and analyzed the signals of acoustic waves using acoustic two types sensors with 125KHz and 50KHz resonant frequency respectively when the particles were dropped on the surfaces of circular plates and inside of GlS tanks. We found that the difference between peak outputs of two sensors depended on the types and materials of particles and the conditions of dropping position. These results showed that the outputs of 125KHz sensor were higher than those of 50KHz sensor in circular plate and 362㎸ GIS tank made of steel and vice versa in circular plate and 800㎸ GIS tank made of aluminum. The ratios outputs of 125KHz sensor to those of 50KHz sensor were 1.4 - 2.37 in 800㎸ GIS tank and were 0.5 - 1.0 in 362㎸ GIS tank. Therefore we knew that adaption of two types acoustic sensors which had different resonant frequencies as a very useful method in diagnosis of GIS.

  • The Daehan Uiwon (Historic Site No. 248) in which the predecessor of Seoul National University Hospital is a crucial medical institution that built in the Korean Empire period. One of them, East 1 Affiliated Ward that attached to Daehan Uiwon was built with concrete foundation in 1908 and extended two times in 1935 and 1954. As a result of material scientific analysis for concrete foundation, all of the foundation is composed of mortar and stone aggregates, however, the mixing proportions between the aggregate and the mortar were confirmed to be different with construction periods. To determine the mixing proportion, and physical properties by ultrasonic velocity and rebound hardness, the concrete foundations by construction period were obtained. In result, 1954's mixing proportion of concrete between mortar and stone aggregate indicated the highest ratio of aggregates with 1 : 35, mean value of ultrasonic velocity and unconfined compressive strength were calculated with 450 m/s and 18.92 MPa in 1954's constructions that is the lowest values compared with other times. As a result, the difference characteristics of physical properties by construction periods are possible interpreted with porosities and mixing ratios of stone aggregates.

  • This study was carried out to document and diagnose the conditions of the seated stone statue of Buddhist Master Seungga in Seunggasa temple immediately after its conservation treatment, which was found to be long covered in surface of white materials. The stone Halo was researched along with the Statue, and basic data was secured through precisely examination and nondestructive diagnosis. The result from the surface deterioration evaluation shows that both the Statue and Halo had a little bit of physical deterioration, although their level of chemical deterioration was proportionally higher due to discoloration. The physical property diagnosis using ultrasonic measurements on the Statue and Halo showed that the average ultrasonic velocity was found to be 3,570 m/s and 3,373 m/s, respectively, which corresponds to grade III, an indication of a favorable physical property. The surface covered materials were detected to be Ca, Ti, Pb, Fe, Al and Si, emanating from Hobun (Oster shell powder; $CaCO_3$) or lime ($CaO{\cdot}Ca(OH)_2$) and silicate minerals. Furthermore, Ti and Pb seems to be the component of the white coloring pigments, titanium white ($TiO_2$) and white lead ($2PbCO_2{\cdot}Pb(OH)_2$). Therefore, the seated stone statue of Buddhist Master Seungga is presumed to be painted with Hobun or lime and thereafter painted over with titanium white and white lead.

  • Poly-DCPD and poly-DCPD/silicates hybrids were prepared by in-situ ROMP poly-merization using $WCl_6$ catalyst. Good dispersion of silicates in DCPD medium can be accomplished by sonication method. Compared with nanocomposites prepared using $Na^+MMT$, the nanocomposites with CL 15A showed well dispersed silicate's morphology. superior thermal and mechanical properties. Additionally, well dispersed silicates in DCPD matrix enhanced the gas barrier property of the nanocomposites.

  • Purpose: Focused ultrasound is an emerging technology for treating the brain locally in a noninvasive manner. In this study, we have investigated the influence of skull properties on simulating transcranial pressure field. Methods: A 3D computational model of transcranial focused ultrasound was constructed using female and male CT data to solve for intracranial pressure. For heterogeneous model, the acoustic properties were calculated from CT Hounsfield units based on a porosity. The homogeneous model assigned constant acoustic properties for the single-layered skull. Results: A computational model was validated against empirical data. The homogeneous models were then compared with the heterogeneous model, resulted in 10.87% and 7.19% differences in peak pressure for female and male models respectively. For the focal volume, homogeneous model demonstrated more than 94% overlap compared with the heterogeneous model. Conclusion: Homogeneous model can be constructed using MR images that are commonly used for the segmentation of the skull. We propose the possibility of the homogeneous model for the simulating transcranial pressure field owing to comparable focal volume between homogeneous model and heterogeneous model.
