  • The spectral and temporal characteristics of a V-groove AIGaAs-GaAs quantum wire (QWR) laser were investigated with varying the cavity length. At cavity lengths shorter than 300 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, a discrete shift in tile wavelength occurred from the n=1 to the n=2 subband due to the increased cavity losses. Utilizing this characteristic, ultrafast lasing characteristics at each subband were investigated by tile gain switching method.

  • Tungsten wire micro electrochemical machining (W-wire micro ECM) with ultra-short pulses enables precise micro machining of metal. In wire micro ECM, platinum wire has been used because it is electrochemically stable. However, the micro metal wire with low strength is easily deformed by hydrogen bubbles which are generated during the machining. The wire deformation decreases the machining accuracy. To reduce the influence of hydrogen bubbles, in this paper, the use of tungsten wire was investigated. To improve machining accuracy, suitable pulse conditions which affect generation of bubbles were also investigated. The tungsten wire micro ECM can be applied to the fabrication of various shapes. Using this method, various micro-parts and shapes were fabricated.

  • Stereo-lithography using the two photon absorption(TPA) makes micro structures with great resolution. The technique is applied to correcting photomask, 3-D photonic crystal, 3-D optical storage, 3-D lithography and so on. In contrast to a conventional stereo-lithography with single-photon absorption which has a size problem caused by the geometrical diffraction limit, the stereo-lithography with TPA has no size limit. • In this paper, signal processing techniques for noncoherent impulse-radio-based UWB (IR-UWB) communication system are proposed to provide system implementation of low power consumption and low complexity. The proposed system adopts a simple modulation technique of OOK (on-oft-keying) and noncoherent signal detection based on signal amplitude. In particular, a technique of a novel high speed digital sampler using a stable, lower reference clock is developed to detect nano-second pulses and recover digital signals from the pulses. Also, a 32 bits Turyn code for data frame synchronization and a convolution code as FEC are applied, respectively. To verify the proposed signal processing techniques for low power, low complexity noncoherent IR-UWB system, the proposed signal processing technique is implemented in FPGA and then a short-range communication system for wireless transmission of high quality MP3 data is designed and tested.

  • Recently, the developments in generating and amplifying ultrashort optical pulses $(ps=10^{-12}s or fs=10^{-15}s)$ have imposed on great advances in the time-resolved laser spectroscopy. Especially, the transient absorption spectroscopy has a wide application range and the main idea of this technique is pump & probe method. After the pump pulse makes the material an excited or a transient states, the probe pulse is sent through the material to measure the absorbance change due to the transient states. Here, if the absorbance change was measured by the time delay between pump & probe pulses, the dynamic information of the excited or the transient states (the transient abnsorption changes by time & wavelength) can be obtained. At our laboratory, the ultrashort optic1 pulse (

  • In this paper, we propose a RF front-end developments for vehicle UWB radar systems. UWB systems have a very narrow pulse width that is below 1ns. Therefore, UWB is designed to have broadband quality of low power several GHz and must coexist with the radio communication system. UWB's advantages include high channel capacity and data rate, because precise resolution for multi-path can easily position estimate and Rake receiver. Also, UWB has low interference because it displays broadband quality of low power. Positioning is made possible by short range accuracy, which can reduce the expense of system design. An RF front-end module is designed using the DCR(Direct ConveRsion) method and is composed in RF for vehicles at a low-cost.

  • Electro_optical characteristics in AC-PDP are confined by a lots of parameters. especially driving pulse shape is very important to improve AC-PDP's luminosity and efficiency. In that experiment measure the luminosity, IR(Infra Red) peak value and response time as the increase of 1st, 2rd sustain pulse width. The VDS(Versatile Driving Simulator -developed by kwangwoon university-) was used to make driving pulse shape. It is found that IR response time after displacement current, Luminosity and IR peak value are changed on account of 1st,2rd sustain pulse width.

  • In this paper. micro electrochemical machining (ECM) for micro structure fabrications is presented. By applying ultra short pulses. the chemical reaction can be restricted only to the region very close to the electrode. Micro ECM is applied to machining micro structures through electrochemical milling process becasuse it doesn't suffer from tool wear. Using this method. 3D micro structures were machined on stainless steel. It was found that micro machining is possible with good surface quality in the low concentration electrolyte,0.1 M H₂SO₄. In ECM, as the machining depth increases, better flushing of electrolyte is required for sufficient ion supply. Layer-by-layer milling is advantageous in flushing. However, layer-by-layer milling causes taper of structures. To reduce the taper, application of a disk-type electrode was introduced. By electrochemical milling, various 3D micro structures including a hemisphere with 60 ㎛ diameter were fabricated.

  • We have successfully formed filament inside of a transparent soda-lime glass using a Ti:sapphire based femtosecond laser. To make filament form, keeping the laser intensity higher than critical intensity is essential. Also each of the machining parameters plays an important role for the formation of filament. In this paper, we study what parameter can possibly influence for formation of filament, and we introduce an application using filamentation by femtosecond laser for transparent material.

  • In this paper, we describe experiment results using a vibration assisted hybrid femtosecond laser (${\lambda}$:795 nm) ultra-precision machining system. The hybrid system we have developed is possible that optical focal point of the femtosecond laser constantly and frequently within the range of PZT(piezoactuator) vibrator working distance. Using the hybrid system, We have experimented on brass and studied about differences of result of hole aspect ratio compare to general experiment setup of femtosecond laser system. Aspect ratio of a micro hole on brass is increased as 54% with 100 Hz vibration frequency and surface roughness of the side wall also improved compare to non-vibration.
