Application of the Method of Caustics into Anisotropic Materials (이방성재료에 대한 코스틱스법의 적용)

  • This paper studies the applicability of the method of caustics into anisotropic materials under mode I and mixed static loading conditions and introduces the procedure to obtain stress intensity factors(S.I.F.) in anisotropic materials by the method of caustics. The mapping equations for initial and caustic curves in anisotropic materials were introduced and their computer graphical images were compared to the experimental ones to check the validity of the mapping equations proposed in this paper. The agreement between them was found to satisfactory. Two kinds of method to determine S.I.F. in anisotropic materials by the method of caustics were proposed in this paper and applied into the orthotropic materials under various loading conditions. In the case of mode I loading condition, the S.I.F.'s obtained by this paper's methods were found to be quite similar to the results by other method, boundary element method(B.E.M) and in the case of mixed loading condtion, the S.I.F's by this paper and B.E.M. showed a little differences(2.2-24.4%) with respect to the slanted angle of crack.

  • The fatigue crack growth behavior in GTA butt welded joints of Al-Alloy 5052-H38 was examined using Single Edge Notched(SEN) specimens. It is well known that welding residual stress has marked influence on fatigue crack growth rate in welded structure. In the general area of fatigue crack growth in the presence of residual stress, it is noted that the correction of stress intensity factor (K) to account for residual stress is important for the determination of both stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.K) and stress ratio(R) during a loading cycle. The crack growth rate(da/dN) in welded joints were correlated with the effective stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.Keff) which was estimated by superposition of the respective stress intensity factors for the residual stress field and for the applied stress. However, redistribution of residual stress occurs during crack growth and its effect is not negligible. In this study, fatigue crack growth characteristics of the welded joints were examined by using superposition of redistributed residual stress and discussed in comparison with the results of the initial welding residual stress superposition.

2-Step Shot Peening Process for the Improvement of Fatigue Crack Growth Properties (균열 특성 개선을 위한 2단 쇼트피닝 가공)

  • In this study, to investigate the effects of 2-step shot peening at the surface of spring steel, crack growth tests are conducted on spring steel and shot peened specimens. And then the residual stresses and fractographs are examined. The crack growth equation that can describe the whole crack growth behavior is used to evaluate the experiment results. The results show that fatigue crack glows slowly in the shot peened specimen than in the unpeened. And in the case of the 2-step shot peened specimen the initial stress intensity factor range and the fracture toughness is higher than the unpeened specimen due to the compressive residual stress. Fractographs show that the compressive residual stress of the surface suppress the fatigue crack opening and consequently slow crack growth rates.

  • In this study, to investigate the effects of shot peening on crack growth behavior, crack growth tests are conducted on spring steels and shot peened cracks. The probabilistic crack growth equation, which can represemt the sigmoidal crack growth behavior as recently reported by Kim and Shim, is used to evaluate the experimental results. The results show that fatigue cracks grows slower in the shot peened specimen than in the unpeened and, due to the compressive residual stress occurring on the specimen surface. In the case of the shot peened specimen, the initial stress intensity factor range and the fracture toughness is higher than the non-peened specimen because the compressive residual stress affects crack growth and fracture of the specimen.

  • In this study, the 4-point bending test been performed in order to estimate effect of grinding on fatigue characteristics quantitatively for as-welded specimen, grinding specimen & TIG-dressing specimen for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue tests, fatigue strength at $2{\times}106$cycles of grinding specimen and TIG-dressing specimen has been increased compared with as-welded specimen and satisfied the grade of fatigue strength prescribed in specifications of domestics and AASHTO & JSSC. A Study on the Fatigue Fracture Behavior in Butt Welded Joints of Steel Structures (강구조물(鋼構造物) 맞대기 용접연결부(鎔接連結部)의 피로파괴거동(疲勞破壞擧動)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • For the research on the fatigue fracture behavior in the welded joints of steel structures, base metal specimens and welded ones were selected, and the direct fatigue tests were carried out. Thereafter, fatigue-life (S-N) curves, plastic strain-number of cycles (${\varepsilon}_p$-N) curve, the extrapolated fatigue-life (${\varepsilon}_p$-$N_c$) curve, and da/dN-${\Delta}K$ curves were plotted. By these results the followings were obtained. It was shown that the ratio of fatigue strength at $2{\times}10^6$ cycles of the welded specimen to that of the base metal one was 0.6, and that 0.72 for the base metal and 0.65 for the welded one were the ratio of fatigue strength at $2{\times}10^6$ cycles to yielding stress. The S-N curve for the welded specimen was separated into two sections, the low gradient section and the steep section. As this result, it was shown that the more stress became to reduce, the more the reduction of fatigue strength became to be great. It was shown that fatigue strength at $2{\times}10^6$ cycles from this case was about 83 % of that from the S-N curve plotted with one section. It was thought that the reason was that weld flaw acted greatly on the fatigue strength within the low stress range. It was shown that at the instart of crack initiation plastic strain increased abrupt1y in the case of the welded specimen more than the case of the base metal specimen, and increased abruptly in the upper stress range in both cases. It was shown that the experimental constant ${\alpha}$, 0.42, in the base metal nearly accorded with Manson-Coffin's result, but this made a great difference with the case in the welded specimen. It was thought that it was due to the abrupt change of plastic strain and the influence of weld flaw.

  • The numerical simulation of Brazilian fracture toughness test is carried out using PFC code and the influence parameters are analyzed such as shape of loading plane, size of Brazilian disc and unit panicle of model, loading angle and loading rate. The flattened Brazilian disc is adopted for applying uniform load. The range of loading angle(2$\alpha$) necessary to induce the tensile crack at disc center and to obtain the load-displacement curve giving the critical load for the stable crack propagation is shown as 20$^{\circ}$~40$^{\circ}$. In condition that the loading angle is 20$^{\circ}$, the mode-I fracture toughness is evaluated almost constant in the range of particle size less than I mm and loading rate less than 0.01 mm/s. This range of influence parameters seems appropriate condition for the tensile crack initiation at disc center and the control of stable crack propagation, which can give the reliance in evaluation of fracture toughness by Brazilian test.
