  • Ultra-high performance concrete and high ductile cementless composite are considered as promising construction materials because those exhibits higher performance in terms of high strength and high ductility. The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the compressive strength and tensile behavior of ultra-high performance concrete and high ductile cementless composite. A series of experiments including density, compressive strength, and uniaxial tension tests were performed. Test results showed that the compressive strength and tensile strength of alkali-activated slag based high ductile cementless composite were lower than those of ultra-high performance concrete. However, the tensile strain capacity and toughness of alkali-activated slag based high ductile cementless composite were higher than those of ultra-high performance concrete. And it was exhibited that a high ductility up to 7.89% can be attainable by incorporating polyethylene fiber into the alkali-activated slag based cementless paste.

  • Ultra-High Strength Concrete(UHPC) has ultra-high material performance including high strength and high flowability. On the other hand it is less ductile than high ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composite. This study investigated the effect of combination of steel fiber and micro fiber on the tensile behavior of UHPC. Four types of UHPC containing combination of steel fiber, polyethylene(PE), polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), and basalt fiber were designed. And then uniaxial tension tests were performed to evaluate the tensile behavior of UHPC according to combination of fibers. And density was measured to evaluate whether micro fiber induces unintentional high pore or not. From the test results, it was exhibited that PE fiber with high strength is effective to improve the tensile behavior of UHPC and basalt fiber is effective to increase the cracking and tensile strength of UHPC. Furthermore, it was also verified that micro fiber does not make high pore.

  • The prestressing force introduced to the tendon in pretensioned concrete members is transferred by direct bond between tendon and concrete, which requires a proper estimation of stress transfer length. The use of pretensiond and/or precast members with UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) may give many advantages in quality control. This paper presents an experiment to estimate the stress transfer length of UHPC for various compressive strength levels of UHPC, cover depths, diameters of tendons and tensioning forces. According to the result of this experiment, the stress transfer length of UHPC member is much reduced comparing that of normal strength concrete. The reduction in stress transfer length of UHPC may come from the high bond strength capacity of UHPC. The transfer lengths obtained from this experiment are compared to those in current design code and a new formula is proposed.

  • In this study, flexural tests of precast concrete panels according to the thickness of cross-sectional and the with or not of reinforcement were carried out in order to develop and assess of a lightweight precast concrete panel using ultra high performance concrete. For the test, four panels were fabricated, and consisted of one normal concrete panel and three ultra high performance concrete panels. As a test result, it was found that the plain precast panel using ultra high performance concrete had a lower flexural performance than the reinforced normal concrete panel, regardless of the cross-sectional size. The flexural performance of the hollow-sectional precast panel applying ultra high performance concrete, is improved by 150% compared to that of the reinforced normal concrete panel. That is, through additional performance verification and optimization of the cross-sectional design of the panel, the ultra high performance concrete precast panel can be made lighter. Also, the practical use of lightweight precast panels with ultra high performance concrete can be available through evaluation on shear, joint connection and anchoring, etc.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC), is characterized by its high compressive strength and advanced tensile behavior that is much superior to those of conventional concrete. In order to apply this new material in practice, the bond characteristics of UHPC were evaluated in this study. Pull-out tests between UHPC and deformed steel rebar were carried out according to the modified RILEM test method, and were verified by finite element analysis. From the test results showed that UHPC presents 5 to 10 times higher bond strength compared to normal strength concrete, this study suggested remarkably reduced development length and concrete cover comparing to existing specifications. The test results of 700 MPa high strength steel rebar demonstrated the applicability of high strength steel to UHPC. In addition, the transfer length measurements of seven-wire strand in UHPC specimens indicated that the transfer length limit set by the current design code is very conservative for UHPC.

  • This paper concerns the flexural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) beams with compressive strength of 150 MPa. It presents experimental research results of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced UHPC beams with steel fiber content of 1.5% by volume and steel reinforcement ratio of less than 0.02. This study aims at investigating of compressive and tensile behavior of UHPC to perform a reasonable prediction for flexural capacity of UHPC beams. Tensile behavior modeling was performed using load-crack mouth opening displacement relationship obtained from bending test. The experimental results show that steel fiber-reinforced UHPC is in favor of cracking resistance and ductility of beams. The ductility indices range from 1.6 to 3.0, which means high ductility of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced UHPC. Test results and numerical analysis results for the moment-curvature relationship are compared. Though the numerical analysis results for the bending capacity of the UHPC beam without rebar is larger than test result, the overall comparative results show that the bending capacity of steel fiber-reinforced UHPC beams with compressive strength of 150 MPa can be predicted by using the established method in this paper.

  • Structural performance and durability of ultra high performance concrete could demonstrate optimal performance when unity was kept. Accordingly, it is necessary to involve the characteristics and quantitative surface treatment at the same time in order to retain oneness of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete(UHPC) according to construction joint occurrence. Therefore, this study derives a reasonable surface treatment method in a material's point of view through the shear adhesion performance evaluation according to the construction joints surface processing method as a part for securing the adhesion performance of the construction joints when casting UHPC. 180 MPa of required average strength was used for mix of UHPC and surface treatment method was set to totally 7 level that MN, GR-10-0, GR-20-0, GR-30-0, SH-30-5, SH-30-10. After the specimen were manufactured to a size of $150{\times}150{\times}150mm$, Direct shear test was performed to evaluate the shear adhesion strength. As a result, it was confirmed that the adhesion performance was improved when executing a surface treatment for the construction joint interface and standard of failure mode of specimen was over Type C. Also, It was considered that interface of cross section and depth of concavo-convex should be concerned.

  • Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC), which is characterized by its high strength and advanced ductile behavior that is much superior to those of convention concrete, is a useful material to make thinner and longer bridges. The precast segmental construction method utilizing UHPC has been mainly studied because cast-in-place UHPC is very difficult and complicate to be achieved. As a part of those research, the structural performance evaluation of different types of joint connection method for hybrid cable-stayed bridge utilizing UHPC by using nonlinear analyses is performed in this study. The bond stress at joint is obtained by section force analyses for a 600 m cable-stayed bridge deck, and compared with the required bond stress at joint. Analysis results show that the U Type connection and straight type connection resist the highest ultimate load and bond strength, respectively. In addition, all considered joint connection systems satisfy the bond performances at joint required in the final stage of cable-stayed bridge utilizing UHPC.

  • In order to estimate the mechanical properties of ultra high performance concrete, the most important is to evaluate its tensile behavior. The tensile behavior of concrete is generally characterized by the elastic behaviour before cracking and tensile stress-crack width relationship after cracking. We carried out the direct tensile and flexural tensile test and compared the tensile behaviors obtained by the direct tensile test and by inverse analysis of the flexural tensile test results. We compared the obtained tensile behavior with that of JSCE recommendations for ultra high performance concrete as well. we could see that the tensile stress-crack width relationship obtained from the flexural tensile test results using inverse analysis had good agreement with directly obtained tensile behaviour with direct tensile test and showed similar tensile softening behaviour introduced in JSCE recommendations for ultra high performance concrete.
