  • Shylock in Shakespeare's play, The Merchant of Venice has been considered as either a devilish villain, or as a victim who was persecuted unfairly by the Christian society in Venice. By focusing on the matter of the Other, which has been summarily overlooked in literary texts and the literary criticism, it is noted that the New Historical and Cultural criticism interpreted Shylock as the racial, religious, and economic Other in the Venetian society which at the time was dominated by Christian ideals. The purpose of this paper is to show how Shylock becomes an abjected Other, that is, the abject, based on Julia Kristeva's theory of abjection. According to Kristeva, an abjection is the process of expulsion of otherness from society, through which the subject or the nation tries to set up clear boundaries and establish a stable identity. Shylock is marginalized and abjected by the borders drawn by the Venetian Christian society, which in a strong sense tries to protect its identity and homogeneity by rejecting and excluding any unclean or improper otherness. The borders include the two visible borders like the Ghetto and the red hats worn by the Jews, and one invisible border in the religious and economic fields. By asking for one pound of Antonio's flesh when he can't pay back 3,000 ducats owed, Shylock tries to cross the border between Christians and Jews. Portia frustrates Shylock's desire to violate the border by presenting a different interpretation of the expression, 'one pound of flesh,' from Shylock's interpretation. And in doing so she expels him back to his original position of abject.

  • This study was purposed to explore the learning culture through the related literature and research review in Jewish Havruta which has interaction, critical reflection, and the driving force creating a better world. The prior researches on Havruta mainly tend to as ways to increase learners' interest in learning and studies as curriculum or teaching methods such as creativity, understanding, and problem-solving skills. However, Havruta is not just method to study subjects, but rather a process of developing thinking through dialogue and discussion. Therefore, Havruta's essential meaning as a lifelong learning should be explored. Studies showed that Jews embody the thinking process from interpreting, analyzing, setting up logic, questioning, discussing, and debating Talmud with others anytime, anywhere, and anyone throughout their learning culture. It develops basic skills for life, forms an integrated personality in relationships with others, and continuously conducts lifelong learning to shape one's own beings. Therefore, lifelong learning culture would be sharing information that one has in the process of discussion through dialogue between two or more people, and supporting and encouraging the other's failure or fear rather than attacking them. The embodiment of thinking process in which people teach and learn eachother, accept the difference, and expand thought would be significant foundation to create lifelong learning culture.

  • The effects of fermentation on soy embryo have been investigated using lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA), Lactobacillus bulgaricus (LB), Streptococcus thermophilussei (ST), and Lactobacillus plantarum (LP). As a result of the fermentation test of the isoflavone conversion by strain type, inoculation content, and fermentation time, the optimum conditions were LP bacterium, an inoculum amount of 5%, and a fermentation time of 24 hours. The composition of the isoflavone glycosides in the control was the highest in the order of glycitin> daidzin> genistin. When fermented with lactic acid bacteria, glycoside content decreased, and aglycone content increased. The order of composition was daidzein>glycitein>genistein. In the fermentation with LP bacterium, soyasaponin Ab content decreased and Ba and Bb content increased. Upon assessing the result of the experiment, it was found that the pH of the fermentation broth had a great influence in the bioconversion of isoflavone and soyasaponin. In the case of fermentation by pH 6 broth, aglycone and Bb content was the highest. The increase of aglycone content by fermentation reaction with the LP bacterium can increase the physiological activity and functionalization of soy embryo, which is a byproduct of processing.

The Meaning of Mutual Life-Giving within Non-Self-Deception in Daesoon Thought: A Comparative Analysis Including the Ethical Theories of Kant, Mill, and Bergson (대순사상에서 무자기의 상생적 의미 -칸트, 밀, 베르그송 윤리학 논의와의 비교를 중심으로-)

  • This study explores the meaning of mutual life-giving within the concept of Non-self-deception (無自欺) in Daesoon Thought by comparing it with Kant's deontological ethics, Mill's utilitarianism, and Bergson's ethics. Kantian ethics defines moral actions through the categorical imperative, emphasizing the principle of acting according to universal laws. In contrast, Mill's utilitarianism views actions that produce good results as morally good, aiming for happiness and pleasure. Non-self-deception in Daesoon Thought is defined as "abandoning selfish desires and regaining one's conscience," fundamentally based on not engaging in falsehoods. Regarding self-deception, Kant and Mill's systems of ethical thought offer different solutions. Kant argues that self-deception cannot be made a universal law according to the categorical imperative, while Mill allows for self-deception, such as lying, if it promotes overall utility. While Non-self-deception is closer to Kantian ethics in principle, it emphasizes not only ethical forms like the categorical imperative but also ethical content such as human relations and mutual beneficence. Furthermore, non-self-deception complements the potential weaknesses of Kantian ethics, which may lean towards intellectualism or formalism, by considering that in certain situations, expedient measures or silence can be regarded as moral emotional actions embodying mutual beneficence. Moreover, this open characteristic of mutual life-giving ethics aligns with Bergson's concept of "open morality," which sublimates instinct and intellect into emotions of love like philanthropy. In this context, the practical ethics of non-self-deception can be understood as the foundation of a new moral principle embodying inclusive ideals such as the 'harmonious virtue of yin and yang' and the 'resolution of grievances for mutual life-giving.'

  • The accurate and simple extraction method for sterols and fatty acids in sesame oil was developed. The new method improved the extraction efficiency of sesamin in sesame oil and the ratio of sesamin over campesterol. It will be applied to judgement of adulteration of plant edible oils. The minor components of sterols were also confirmed. The simultaneous determination of sterols and fatty acids with derivatization were processed, but it was not enough to confirm adulteration, thus need more experiments.

  • Purpose: A sensitive gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was developed for screening of fatty acid oxidation disorders. Methods: The assay utilized a simple protein precipitation with sulfosalicylic acid followed by tert-butyl dimethylsilyl (TBDMS) derivatization of hydroxyl functional group by N-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide (MTBSTFA). Results: Calibration curves of spiked pooled plasma showed a linear relationship in the range of 0.01 ng -2 mg with correlation coefficient value greater than 0.98. Limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) were found in the range of 0.9-8.8 ng and 9-88 ng, respectively. Conclusion: The new developed method might be useful for a rapid, sensitive screening of inherited fatty acid oxidation disorders. In addition, the method expected to be one of the alternative method for screening newborns of metabolic disorders in the laboratories where expensive MS/MS is unavailable.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of solution treatment on the corrosion behavior of Mg-8%Al-(0-1)%Zn casting alloys in 1M NaCl aqueous solution. After the solution treatment, all alloys showed single ${\alpha}$-(Mg) phase microstructure by dissolution of ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ phase into the ${\alpha}$-(Mg) matrix. The $H_2$ evolution volume decreased with an increase in Zn content, which indicates that the addition of Zn plays a beneficial role in decreasing corrosion rate of the Mg-Al-Zn alloy in solution-treated state. The microstructural evaluations on the corrosion products and corroded surfaces after the immersion test in 1 M NaCl solution revealed that the incorporation of more $Al_2O_3$ and ZnO into the corrosion product, by which the penetration of $Cl^-$ ions is impeded, are thought to be responsible for the better corrosion resistance in relation with the Zn addition.

  • Yoqurt products are known to be effective for enhancing health and preventing diseases such as cancers. Such effects are generally believed to be due to actions of polysacchmides in yoqurt products. In this study we have determined compositions of monosaccharides in hydrolysates of commercial yoqrtrt products as the first step of understanding structures of polysaccharides. The yoqtrrt products were ttltracentrifuged, filtered, hydrolyzed in 1M sulfuric acid and neutralized. A portion of the solution was taken and evaporated to dryness, denvatized with TMSI (trimethly- silylimidazole) and analyzed by GC/MS. We found that the monosaccharides were fructose, glucose, and galactose. Their compositions were variant among several yoqtrrt products.

  • To determine the effect of temperature and microstructure on the fatigue crack propagation behavior in Ti-3Al-2.5V alloy, experimental investigations have been carried out with the specimens of different temperatures and different volume fractions of prime $\alpha$-phase. The temperatures employed were room temperature, 20$0^{\circ}C$, 30$0^{\circ}C$ and 40$0^{\circ}C$ under the same frequency of 20Hz. To obtain the different volume fractions of the primary $\alpha$-phase, specimens were solution-treated at $\alpha$+$\beta$ and above the $\beta$ region. From the experimental results, following conclusions were obtained. (1) ΔKth was observed to increase with the less volume fraction of the primary $\alpha$-phase. (2) As the temperature increased. (3) Microstructures having more primary $\alpha$-phase showed higher strength at the high temperatures.
