  • Twenty five female students in Seoul participated and were divided into two group in the experiment of weight loss effect of two treatments. Fourteen students(Treatment A group), randomly chosen from the students, had fed on diet foods and exercised over 8 weeks, and the remaining students(Treatment B group) had fed on diet foods only for the same periods. Weights of 25 students had been measured repeatedly four times at an interval of two weeks during 8 weeks, It resulted from mixed model analysis of repeated measurements data that separate Toeplitz pattern for each treatment group was selected as the optimal covariance pattern. Based upon the optimal covariance pattern model, the baseline effect and time effect were found to be highly significant, but the treatment-time interaction effect was found to be insignificant. Finally, the students with diet foods and exercises were more effective in losing weight than the students with only diet foods were.

  • The elliptical trainers(ET) can be a good tool for educating engineers by analyzing physical responses in terms of Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER, epm) and Heart Rate (HR, bpm). For the various energy expenditure, exercise speed, and weight loss both RER and HR are studied in order to study the blood circulations based on the health training cardiorespiratory. As the results, (1) RER increases gradually as the energy expenditure, however, HR increases gradually up to a critical value and then increases rapidly. The critical value of the energy expenditure in our studies was 275 Cal. (2) RER increases gradually as the ET speed increases, however, HR increases gradually up to a critical value and then increases rapidly. The critical value of the ET speed in our studies was about 6.7km/h. (3) RER increases gradually as the weight loss increases (or, the metabolic cost increases), however, HR is almost nothing to do with the increase of the weight loss.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of low calorie meal substitute and weight control preparation containing dietary fibers, ${\alpha}$-amylase inhibitor and hydroxycitrate on the reduction of body weight and visceral fat in obese women. Sixteen pre-menoposal healthy women (age: 20∼50 y, body mass index >25) who were living in the Daejeon area participated in this study. We replaced one meal of the subject with low calorie meal substitute and fed the weight control preparation twice a day for 9 weeks. Anthropometric indices, body composition, dietary intake and stool movements were investigated every 3 weeks during the dietary intervention. The blood was collected before and after the dietary intervention. Results are as follows: 1) The subjects' body weight, body fat, BMI, waist, hip and abdominal adipose tissue decreased gradually and significantly between 3rd and 9th week after intervention. 2) The levels of fasting blood glucose, triglyceride and cholesterol, the indicators of liver dysfunction such as activities of ALT, AST and ALP, and bilirubin level were within a normal range and not affected significantly by dietary intervention. 3) Hemoglobin levels increased significantly and blood urea nitrogen level decreased. 4) Their stool movement was improved 5) Compared with the baseline values, calorie intake decreased by 17.5∼21.9% and the intakes of vitamin A, vitamin B2, folate, Ca, Fe, and Zn were below 80% of Korean RDA. In conclusion, the intake of low calorie meal substitute and weight control preparation could be effective in reduction of body weight and fat mass, improving the stool movement and the general physical symptoms.

  • This study was performed to investigate the nutrition status by weight loss(diet) of 287 female college students, focus on questionnaire about diet survey. The subjects mainly had irregularly one or two meal per a day so food behavior was not good. Over half of subjects had a tendency to overestimate body shape of self. The desired weight(46.95$\pm$0.39kg) was significant lower than real weight(50.32$\pm$0.9)(p=0.0114). The time when diet is first tried was mainly after high school(94.51%). Mean weight loss was 1~4kg but most of subjects didn't maintain the lost weight. The diet approach method tried was sequently the fasting 1 meal or the more in a day(23.61%), exercise(21.92%), restricting calories(15.85%) etc. The source of diet was orderly newspaper or magazine(30.86%), friends or relatives or family(28.86%) etc. The group who recognized the self body shape was normal or a little fat had higher self notion of health than other groups.

  • Eating disorders are psychiatric disorders characterized by abnormal eating patterns and cognitive distortions related to food, weight and shape, which is in turn result in adverse effects on nutrition status, medical complications, and impaired health status and function. The American Psychiatric Association's DSMIVTR offers two diagnoses to describe disordered eating anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A third category, eating disorder not otherwise specified(EONOS) include binge eating disorder. The prevalence of eating disorder has greatly increased among adolescence and young adults since 1990's when rapid import of western culture took place. It is likely that patients who ask for weight loss are at high risk of having eating disorder. Severe dietary restriction for weight loss may cause eating disorder. Therefore it is recomendable for doctors to have appropriate understanding and guidelines of eating disorder to help their patients.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors related to the academic burden on weight loss efforts among adolescents aged 12-18 in Korea. Methods: This study analyzed 29,069 obese adolescents (10.8%) using raw data of the 9th~12th the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey collected from 2013 to 2016. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square and multivariate logistic regression. Results: Weight control efforts were significantly higher among girls, middle school students, those who are participating in nutrition education, and individuals with perceived fatness or perceived stress. Additionally, a long sitting time and high academic performance were found to be variables affecting the weight control efforts of adolescents. Conclusion: Obese adolescents in Korea spent a lot of time in their studies due to their academic burdens and this caused a lack of time to adjust their weight. Therefore, it is needed to establish a policy by considering these social and cultural factors for obese adolescents in Korea.
