  • Air cooled condenser for power plant is used at inland area of desert or mountainous area because condenser coolant like sea water is not necessary. However, the performance of air cooled condenser is influenced by ambient condition such as wind speed and air temperature. Therefore, various devices have been designed to improve the performance of air cooled condenser. In this study, the CFD analysis for air cooled condenser was carried out according to wind speed and wind screen configuration. As wind speed increased from 3m/s to 7m/s, the fan flow rate was reduced about 15.76% and the rise of inlet air temperature was 5.55 degree of Celsius. When the suitable wind screen is equipped, the fan flow rate went up about 5.18% and inlet air temperature dropped by 2.08 degree of Celsius in comparison with original case without wind screen at 7m/s wind speed.

  • A numerical model was developed to predict the density wave oscillation (DWO) in the furnace wall tubes of a fossil-fired once-through boiler. The transient flow fields in the tubes were obtained using a 1D finite volume method in the time domain. A header model was also implemented to simulate the parallel tube connection of the wall tubes. The inlet and outlet mass flow variation in one of the parallel tubes was examined after a heat perturbation to find the DWO. After successful verification with experimental results reported in literature, the developed model was applied to the wall tubes of a 700-MW boiler furnace. In contrast to the simulation of Takitani's experiment, in which the unstable power thresholds tended to rise in the reduced bypass channel flow, no remarkable changes were observed in the power thresholds in the parallel channel modeling of the wall tubes of the boiler furnace.

  • In this paper, we designed and implemented a system for automatically measuring pig growth rate using image. Pig breeding is a very important factor because the breeding rate of pigs is directly linked to the rancher's economic interests in order to raise them in livestock farms. Therefore, there is a demand for a method for easily measuring the growth rate of each pig. As a method for this, an image analysis algorithm for measuring the growth rate of pigs is presented by taking a plan view of the pig. In addition, the proposed algorithm was implemented to measure the surface area of swine and to express it as the rate of gain. The proposed method in this paper makes it possible to easily measure the individual growth rate of pigs to meet the needs of farmers. In the future, we will improve the algorithm to calculate the volume so that the same value as the actual measurement can be obtained.

  • The detection of axial cracks using conventional MFL pig is a significant challenge in the gas pipeline inspection. In this study, a technique using interaction of circumferentially induced torrents with axial stress corrosion crack is presented. The feasibility of this technique is investigated using finite element modeling. Finite element analysis of such interaction is a difficult problem in terms of both computation time and memory requirements. The challenges arise due to the nonlinearity of material properties, the small sire of tight cracks relative to that of the magnetizer, and also time stepping involved in modeling velocity effects. This paper presents an approach based on perturbation methods. The overall analysis procedure is divided into 4 simple steps that can be performed sequentially. Modeling results show that this technique can effectively detect colonies of SCC as well as single SCC.

  • The objective of this paper is to provide a method of optimizing are as of the members as well as shape of both truss and arch structures. The design process includes satisfaction of stress and Euler buckling stress constraints for truss and combined stress constraints for arch structures. In order to reduce the number of detailed finite element analysis, the Force Approximation Method is used. A finite element analysis of the initial structure is performed and the gradients of the member end forces are calculated with respect to the areas and nodal coordinates. The gradients are used to form an approximate structural analysis based on first order Taylor series expansions of the member end forces. Using move limits, a numerical optimizer minimizes the volume of the structure with information from the approximate structural analysis. Numerical examples are performed and compared with other methods to demonstrate the efficiency and reliability of the Force Approximation Method for shape optimization. It is shown that the number of finite element analysis is greatly reduced and that it leads to a highly efficient method of shape optimization of structures.

  • The flow analysis has been made by applying the turbulent models in the helically coiled tubes of heat transfer. The k-${\varepsilon}$ and Spalart-Allmaras turbulent models are used in which the structured grid is applied for the simulation. The velocity vector, the pressure contour, the change of residuals along the iteration number and the friction factors are simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations to make clear the Reynolds number effect. The helical tube increases the centrifugal forces by which the wall shear stress become larger on the outer side of the tube. The centrifugal force makes the heat transfer rate locally larger due to the increase of the flow energy, which finds out the close relationship between the pressure drop and friction factor in the internal flow. The present numerical results are compared with others, for example, in the value of friction factor for validation.

  • Pneumatic levitation is based upon Bernoulli's principle. However, this method is known to require a large gas flow rate that can lead to an increase in the cost of products. In this case, the gas flow rate should be increased, and the compressible effects of the gas may be of practical importance. In the present study, a computational fluid dynamics method has been used to obtain insights into Bernoulli levitation flows. Three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations in combination with the SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The gas flow rate, workpiece diameter, and clearance gap between the workpiece and the circular cylinder were varied to investigate the flow characteristics inside. It is known that there is an optimal clearance gap for the lifting force and that increasing the supply gas flow rate results in a larger lifting force.

  • A numerical simulation is carried out on flows in a rotating serpentine flow passage, which models a cooling passage in a gas turbine blade, by using a 3-D FVM based TURBO-D program. When it is rotating, the flow field exhibits quite different aspects due to the effect of the Coriolis force. Especially the secondary flow field appearing in the cross-sectional area is very complex because of the combined effect of the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force in the curved area. Local Nusselt numbers are also obtained based on the Reynolds analogy and compared with the published experimental data showing a good agreement. The results of the present study can be applied to the design of cooling passages of a gas turbine blade.

  • It was reviewed for the 2D numerical simulations to evaluate the effects of flood control by detention basin, even if stage-discharge relationships for the side weir were not known. A 2D depth-integrated numerical model was constructed by the application of the finite volume method to the shallow water equations as a numerical method and the introduction of an approximate Riemann solver for the accurate calculation of fluxes. Results by the model were compared with those by the laboratory test for the cases of free overflow and submerged flow over a side weir between the channel and storage. The difference between simulated and measured discharge coefficients for the case of free overflow is very small. In addition, the results by simulations were in good agreement with those by experiments for the submerged flow over a side weir and its mechanism was reproduced well. Through this study the discharge coefficients of side weirs can be accurately determined by the 2D numerical model and a considerable degree of accuracy can be achieved to evaluate the effect of flood defenses by detention basins. Thus, it will be expected to apply this model practically to the plan of detention basins, the evaluation of design alternatives, or the management of the existing ones.

  • An equation to predict the ground settlement caused by tunneling through granular soils is proposed, The equation is developed modifying the Murayama equation using the results of elastic finite element analysis. Ground settlements at the underground structures in Korea and other countries are analyzed. From the results of the settlement analysis, it is found that the ground settlement associated with tunneling through granular soils is not only affected by tunnel geometry but also related to volume change characteristics of soils. It is also found that the widths of shear band, t in field conditions are 2 to 6 times greater than the values proposed in the Murayama's model. Calculated settlements using the proposed equation show reasonable agreement with the observed settlements and the results from the elasto-plastic finite element analysis. Murayama equation seems to underestimate the ground settlement.
