A study on the restoration process of a stream ecosystem and the water quality renovation technique by removing algae, vegetation and fish monitoring as evaluating the removal of the algae by dietetic characteristics of fishes were performed on Sangdong stream in the B city after stream restoration it to the artificial stream as the cases, restoring urban stream into close-to-nature stream are being increased domestically with the aim of ecological city. As a result, restoration and rehabilitation of the fundamental stream ecosystem was well maintained 4 years later the reclamation at the moment and total 93 diagnosis which were all vascular plant phylum including 44 families, 73 genuses, 79 species and 14 varieties in flora and vegetation community were observed. 3 families, 8 species and 354 populations in total among Fishes were found and Pseudorasbora Parva, Cyprinus Carpic and Carassius Auratus strongly resistant to water pollution were dominantly appeared in order of 50.5% of Pseudorasbora Parva 21.2% of Cyprinus Carpic, 20.9% of Carassius Auratus, 7.1% of Macropodus chinensis and 0.3% of Misqurnus anguillicaudatus according to relative richness index. It turned out to be that Cyprinus Carpic ingests algae over 90% and Carassius Auratus takes it over 30% according to the analysis about the alimentary object of the fishes as a consequences of algae's excrescent from characteristics of the tested experimental stream. It is reported that a Cyprinus Carpic, about 34 cm in length, ingested wet-weight 43.2g algae on the rough analysis toward the sample which makes us recognize how effective a macro community Cyprinus Carpic is for removing algae. As a consequence of this research, the effect of stream ecosystem characteristics and water quality purification could not be expected by aquatic plants and trees which were eliminated at experimental stream. From now on, a close-to-nature stream should be formed of ecological hydraulic and hydrologic engineered modeling from the beginning so that it can perform the water quality purifying function. It is determined that the structure of food chain will be abundantly influenced by the induction of oversized macro community like Cyprinus Carpic because a biomass of a consumer of higher order is increased. It is estimated that the removal algae by fishes is not effective despite in some cases of dietetic characteristics so much more studies should be executed in the future.
The muscle extracts of the ascidian, Halocynthia roretzi cultured for two and three years old on the southern coast near Chungmu and the eastern coast near Pohang of Korea, were analyzed for extractive nitrogen (EN), free amino acids (FAA), combined amino acids (CAA), nucleotides and related compounds (NRC), quaternary ammonium bases and guanidino compounds using specimens collected in February 1989 and in April 1989, and compared for those contents with each other. As for the amount of EN, no remarkable difference was found between two- and three-year-old samples collected at St. 1 in the spring and winter seasons, while at St. 2 in the spring season the two-year-old sample was distinctly lower than the three-year-old one. Taurine, proline, glutamic acid, glycine and alanine were the major FAA in every sample. The amount of taurine, the most prominent FAA, was higher in three-year-old sample than in two-year-old one regardless of sampling station and season. Most of the other major FAA showed a similar tendency to EN at both sampling stations in both seasons. Adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP), adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP), inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP), inosine (Ino) and hypoxanthine (Hyp) were detected in all the samples and ATP, ADP and AMP were the major ingredients. The amounts of total NRC were in parallel with those of EN and total FAA. As for the contents of betaines, two- and three-year-old samples collected in the winter season exhibited a great discrepancy each other, the former being clearly lower than the latter, but no remarkable difference was observed between two samples of two groups in the spring season. In proximate composition of the muscles, the two-year-old sample was considerably higher in moisture content and lower in protein and glycogen contents than the three-year-old one at St. 2 in the spring season. The large discrepancies observed between two- and three-year-old samples from St. 2 seems to be attributable to the difference in size of samples rather than to the difference in age.
Changes in stock size of the Pacific saury, Cololabis saira, were studied on the basis of fishery statistics compiled from 1964 to 1972 and body size composition of the fish collected from 1968 to 1972. During the period from 1964 to 1972 there was a direct correlation between the stocks of fall (september-february of the following year) and spring (March-August) season. The sizes of stocks in both seasons showed a three-year cyclic change, and the mode of stock in the fall always proceeded one year that in the spring. Exceedingly high fishing effort was observed in the spring as well as the fall of 1967. But very low fishing effort was noticed in the spring of 1969. In spring a large stock size has a high proportion of large sized group. On the other hand, in fall a large stock size tends to have a high proportion of medium sized group instead. When the medium sized group outnumbers the large sized group, stock size becomes larger. In contrast, it tends to be smaller when the large sized group exceeds the medium sized group. The patterns of distribution centroid seems to be related to the amount of fish landings. Northward moving trend of the centroid was accompanied by a large amount of landing, while westward (or north-westward) moving trend was followed by a poor landing of the fish.
The feeding habits of Coreoperca herzi were investigated from specimens collected in the Geum River, from March to December 2016. The specimens were separated into groups of 38~70 mm, 71~109 mm, and over 110 mm in total length. The live foods of C. herzi included Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Plecoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Trichoptera, and fishes. The Korean aucha perches fed mostly on aquatic insects which took up 98.8% of food regarding the number, 55.8% regarding the biomass, and 97.1% in terms of iregarding the index of relative importance. They were carnivorous in diet and predators (stalker) in food intake characteristics and forms when applying Keenleyside's classification. The main food sources of C. herzi were Ephemeroptera, Diptera, and Trichoptera while Odonata, Plecoptera, Coleoptera, and fishes were rare. A food migration was observed since less Ephemeroptera was found and more Trichoptera and fishes were found in the biomass of the feed consumed by larger species. The amount of Coleoptera and Diptera did not change much with the size of the species. The overall composition of live food was not seasonal. The result of the study indicates that, when restoring the streams to be the habitat for the natural population increase of Coreoperca herzi, the environment should be inhabitable to Ephemeroptera, Diptera, and Trichoptera which are the main foods.
This research was carried out to develop economical artificial diets of the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella (L.). Diets were mixed with malt or sugar instead of whole honey for cheaper ones. fecundity, developmental period, pupation rate, emergence rate and adult longevity of G. mellonella depending on diet were examined. The head width and length of larvae were not significantly different among diets tested. However, the weight of larva was the heaviest, 255.5 mg, at 1/2 honey + 1/2 malt diet and lightest, 144.3 mg, at sugar diet. The weight of pupa was also the heaviest at 1/2 honey + 1/2 malt representing 196.7 mg. Larval period was the shortest at honey diet as 30.9 days but the longest at sugar diet as 36.5 days. Pupation and emergence rates were over 79.3% at all diets. The longevity of mated females was ranged from 6.3 to 8.0 days and those of mated males ranged from 7.9 to 11.2 days. The highest number of eggs, 1269, was obtained at sugar diet. Artificial diets replaced by rice bran, malt, and sucrose reduced costs compared with wheat bran plus honey diet. The cost of rice bran was only 10% of wheat bran. Honey was much more expensive than malt and sugar, that is 6 and 13 times, respectively.
Reproductive cycle, gonadosomatic index(GSI), egg diameter composition, first sexual maturity, sexually matured length(50% of first sexual maturity), and sex ratio of Amusium japonicum japonicum, were investigated by histological observations and morphometric data. Samples were collected monthly from the subtidal zone of Sogwipo, Jejudo, Korea, for two years. The sun and moon scallop Amusium japonicum japonicum is dioecious. Monthly variation in the GSI showed similar patterns with the reproductive cycle. Ripe oocytes were about $70{\sim}90\;{\mu}m$ in diameter and had thick egg membranes. The spawning period was from November to January, and the main spawning occurred between November and December when the seawater temperature was relatively low. From monthly changes in egg diameter composition, the spawning period was once a year, although the number of spawning frequencies is assumed to occur more than twice during the spawning season. The reproductive cycle of this species could be divided into five successive stages: early active stage(April to June), late active stage(June to September), ripe stage(October to November), spawning stage(November to January), and spent/resting stage(February to April). First sexual maturities in female and male scallops ranging from 85.1 to 90.0mm in shell length were over 50% and they were 100% for scallops over 90.0mm in shell length. In this population, sexually matured shell lengths(50% of rate of group maturity) in females and males were 86.96 and 86.59mm, respectively. The female to male sex ratio among individuals over 85.1mm in shell length was not significantly different from 1:1($X^2=0.18$, p>0.05). No evidence of hermaphrodite was found in histological sections of any scallop examined.
Investigations were made on catch composition, sex ratio, relationships between carapace length, body weight and fecundity and spawning season of major target shrimps (Acetes chinensis, A. japonicus) in the shrimp fishing areas of south-western coastal waters, accounting for about $45\%$ of annual shrimp landings in Korea. Catches were collected monthly in the fishing areas from March 2000 to February 2001, using single pocket-walled fishing gear, Total 59 species (shrimps 14, fishes 34, other crustaceans 8 and cephalopods 3 species) occurred. During the study period the bycatch-to-shrimp ratio of shrimp fishery was 2.42 in April 2000 and less than 1 for all months except for August 2000 and Febuary 2001. Compared with shrimp fishery of other areas and nations, these results indicate that effect of the fishing gear on catches of other species is minor, suggesting higher gear selectivity for shrimps. Of shrimps, there were two dominant species (A. chinensis, A. japonirus). Average sex ratio was 1.44 $\pm$ 0.42 for A. japonicus and 1,44 $\pm$ 0.43 for A. chinensis, which are dominant females in August. Average fecundity was 4,812 $\pm$ 1,511 for A. japonicus and 5,561 $\pm$ 1,900 for A. chinensis. In the two species mature females were found in the period from May to August. Similarly, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) was higher in July and August, with a peak in July, These results indicate that their main spawning season was summer.
Effect of the various sources of dietary additives on growth, body composition and shell color of abalone Haliotis discus hannai was investigated for 16 weeks. Forty juvenile abalone averaging 13.5 g were randomly stocked into 21 of 50 L plastic rectangular containers each. Eight kinds of additives were prepared for this study: four commercially available microalgae [Haeatococcus (Hae), Isochrysis galbana (Iso), Shizochytrium (Sch) and Spirulina (Spi)], three crustacean meals [krill meal (KM), shrimp head meal (Shm) and red crab meal (Rcm)], and green tea by-product (Gre). In addition, dry sea tangle (Dst), Laminaria japonica, as a control, was prepared. Casein, dextrin and a mixture corn oil and fish oil was protein, carbohydrate and lipid sources, respectively, in the experimental diets. The 2% each additive was included into the experimental diets. The experimental diets were fed to abalone once a day at the ratio of $1.5{\sim}2.0%$ total biomass of abalone with a little leftover throughout the 16-week feeding trial. Survival of abalone was not significantly (P>0.05) affected by the experimental diets. However, weight gain of abalone fed the all experimental diets containing the various sources of additives was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of abalone fed the Dst diet. Weight gain of abalone fed the Spi diet was highest and Shi, KM and Iso diets in order. Shell length and the ratio of soft body weight to body weight of abalone was not significantly (P>0.05) affected by the experimental diets. However, shell width of abalone fed the all experimental diets containing the various sources of additives was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of abalone fed the Dst diet. The shell color of abalone fed the Spi diet was improved the most distinctively and similar to that of natural abalone. Therefore, it can be concluded that the experimental diets with the various sources of additives (microalgae and crustacean meals) was effective to improve growth of abalone and dietary inclusion of Spirulina was most effective to improve shell color of abalone.
This study evaluated the possible utilization and the replacing range of animal by-product mixture (ABPM) as a dietary fish meal replacer in growing common carp (Cyprinus carpio). ABPM is a mixture of leather meal, meat and bone meal, blood meal and squid liver powder at a specific weight based ratio. Five different diets were formulated on isonitrogenous and isocaloric basis of $40\%$ crude protein and 15.3 KJ/g diet in which white fish meal (WFM) protein was substituted with the ABPM Protein as follows: diet 1, $100\%$ WFM ($0\%$ ABPM, control); diet 2, $75\%$ WFM+$25\%$ ABPM ($25\%$ ABPM); diet $3,\;50\%$ WFM+$50\%$ ABPM ($50\%$ ABPM); diet 4 $25\%$ WFM+$75\%$ ABPM ($75\%$ ABPM); diet $5.0\%$ WFM+$100\%$ ABPM ($100\%$ ABPM). As the dietary protein sources, each diet contained $34.7\%$ of animal protein supplied by white fish meal and/or ABPM and $65.3\%$ of plant protein. After one week of conditioning period, fish averaging 10 g were randomly assigned to each diet treatment as triplicate groups and fed one of the experimental diets for 12 weeks. Weight gain of fish fed diet 1 (control) and 3 were significantly higher than those of fish fed diet 2, 4 and 5 during the first 4 weeks (P< 0.05), while there were no significant differences among all diet groups during the third 4 weeks (P>0.05). Feed conversion ratio of fish fed diet 1 was significantly higher than those fed diet 2, 3, 4 and 5 during the second 4 weeks (P<0.05), while there were no significant differences among all diet groups during the first and the third 4 weeks (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in proximate analysis among fish fed the experimental diets either for the second 4 weeks or the third 4 weeks (P>0.05). These results indicated that ABPM could be used as a fish meal replacer up to $100\%$ in growing common carp.
Based on surplus production models using fishery data for the last 20 years, a stock assessment was conducted for the small yellow croaker in Korean waters. The maximum sustainable yields (MSY) from the Schaefer and Fox models were estimated to be 37,000 metric tons (mt) and 33,450 mt. Zhang's model using time-series biomass with instantaneous coefficients of fishing mortality (F) and using time-series biomass and catch yielded MSY estimates of 45,328 mt and 40,160 mt, respectively. A yield-per-recruit analysis showed that the current yield per recruit of about 20g with F= 1.11 $yr^{-l}$, where the age at first capture $(t_c)$ is 0.604, was much lower than the maximum possible yield per recruit of 43g. Fixing $t_c$ at the current level and reducing fishing intensity (F) from 1.11 $yr^{-l}$ to 0.4 $yr^{-l}$ yielded only a small increase in predicted yield per recruit, from 20 to 25g. However, estimated yield per recruit increased to 43g by increasing $(t_c)$ from the current age (0.604) to age three with F fixed at the current level. This age at first capture corresponded to the optimal length which was obtained from the $F_{0.1}$ method. According to the analysis of stock recovery strategies employing the Zhang model, the optimum equilibrium biomass $(B^*_{MSY})$ which produces the maximum yield could be achieved after approximately five years at the lower fishing intensity (F=0.5).
