  • Electronic devices in railway vehicle perform various functions such as not only braking and propulsion but also monitoring of vehicle condition, on-line diagnosis, and passenger information service, etc. These devices, distributed in vehicle, should be efficiently connected so as to properly perform the functions. IEC (International Electro-Technical Commission) standardized train communication network (TCN) as IEC 61375-1, -2. TCN can reduce the interconnecting work load by reducing the number of wire-line, compared with existing hard-wire connection, and it brings the efficient control by enabling various devices to share the information. But existing TCN can not satisfy the increasing service demands like passenger internet access and CCTV surveillance, etc. In this paper, we investigate ECN (Ethernet Consist Network) and ETN (Ethernet Train Backbone) which are proposed to satisfy these demands and in the process of standardization by IEC TC9 WG43.

  • Wireless communications based train control system which is operated with a dedicated frequency band is used only on the fixed path. Because of that, the problem arises in the area of efficiency. In this paper, a network access management technique is proposed to make the railway dedicated frequency band accessible by a normal mobile communication users efficiently and safely.

  • 최근의 무선통신 시스템은 유지, 보수 및 구축이 유선통신 시스템에 비해 용이하고 이동성을 제공할 수 있다는 장점에 의해, 열차, 차량, 미사일 등의 이동체 제어와 관련된 분야에서의 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 열차 또는 차량 제어와 같이 안전성이 중요시되는 분야에 있어서 전파에 의한 무선 링크는 가장 문제가 되는 부분으로서, 일반적으로 통신시스템은 어느 한 경로에서 고장이 발생하더라도 설계시 정해진 일정수준의 기능을 제공하는 생존성(survivability)을 지니도록 설계되어진다. 이와 관련한 연구와 개발은 대부분 공중 전화망과 고속 데이터 통신망을 대상으로 수행되었다. 본 논문에서는 유럽의 차세대 열차제어시스템에 적용하기 위해 기존의 유럽 표준 이동통신 시스템인 GSM(Global System for Mobile Communications)을 철도분야의 특수성에 맞도록 보완한 GSM-R(GSM-Railway)을 사례로 무선통신 시스템의 생존성을 검토한다.

A Distributed VOD Server Based on Virtual Interface Architecture and Interval Cache (버추얼 인터페이스 아키텍처 및 인터벌 캐쉬에 기반한 분산 VOD 서버)

  • This paper presents a PC cluster-based distributed VOD server that minimizes the load of an interconnection network by adopting the VIA communication protocol and the interval cache algorithm. Video data is distributed to the disks of the distributed VOD server and each server node receives the data through the interconnection network and sends it to clients. The load of the interconnection network increases because of the large amount of video data transferred. This paper developed a distributed VOD file system, which is based on VIA, to minimize cost using interconnection network when accessing remote disks. VIA is a user-level communication protocol removing the overhead of TCP/IP. This papers also improved the performance of the interconnection network by expanding the maximum transfer size of VIA. In addition, the interval cache reduces traffic on the interconnection network by caching, in main memory, the video data transferred from disks of remote server nodes. Experiments using the distributed VOD server of this paper showed a maximum performance improvement of 21.3% compared with a distributed VOD server without VIA and the interval cache, when used with a four-node PC cluster.

  • As smart-phones become popular, mobile data traffic has been dramatically increasing and intensive researches on the next-generation mobile communication network is in progress to meet the increasing demand for mobile data traffic. In particular, heterogeneous network (HetNet) is attracting much interest because it can significantly enhance the network capacity by increasing the spatial resue with macro and small cells. In the HetNet, we have several problems such as load imbalance and interference because of the difference in transmit power between macro and small cells and cell range expansion (CRE) can mitigate the problems. In this paper, we propose a new cell selection scheme with adaptive cell range expansion bias (CREB) for ultra dense HetNet and we analyze the performance of the proposed scheme in terms of average cell transmission rate through system-level simulations and compare it with those of other schemes.

  • The main object of Maritime Safety Network is to prevent Marine Accidents in advance and avoid the loss of live and property efficiently. Our country's Marine Safety Network was widely changed with its concerned rules and the operation methods through the complete operation of GMDSS system. Thus, compared with the past, maritime safety equipment and its systems were enforced, but the loss of lives from marine accidents tends to increase against the general expectation. 80 percent of the total marine accidents in Korea is caused by small fishing boats that are capsized immediately from accidents. To minimize the loss of lives they are to require the help of rescue. Lately imported GMDSS communication equipment is operated very fast automatically to issue the rescue and inform the distress, but most general small fishing boats are under 5 ton vessel and excluded from the administration of GMDSS system. In this paper is to propose the proper solution for the efficient improvement of maritime safety network suitable for the our practical circumstance.

Hybrid MAC Protocol Design for an Underwater Acoustic Network (수중음향통신망을 위한 하이브리드 MAC 프로토콜 설계)

  • This paper deals with hybrid MAC protocol design for underwater acoustic networks. The proposed MAC protocol has the cluster structure with a master node and slave nodes, and the hybrid network structure that combines a contention free period based on TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) with a contention period. The suggested MAC protocol has a beacon packet for supervising network, a guard period between time slots for packet collision, time tag for estimation of propagation delay with a master node, the time synchronization of nodes, entering and leaving of network, and the communication method among nodes. In this paper, we adapt the proposed hybrid MAC protocol to AUV network, that is the representative mobile device of underwater acoustic network, and verify this protocol is applicable in real underwater acoustic network environment.

Development of Integrated Wireless Network for Railway (철도전용 통합무선망 개발)

  • This research aims to conduct a study on the feasibility of the LTE communication method for developing a dedicated integrated railway wireless network. An empirical analysis was carried out by establishing a dedicated integrated railway wireless network in an approximately 12km section between Illo station and Daebul station on the Honam line. Korean wireless communication methods for railway safety are different depending on each line, which makes it difficult for railway workers to cooperate with. This causes various problems. There is the ever-present risk of accidents due to call disconnection between wireless communication systems, frequency interference from commercial networks, and crosstalk. This study verified the feasibility of the 4th generation communication system, LTE, over the dedicated integrated railway wireless network as a solution for the above mentioned problems. The result shows this communication system exceeded existing performance standards of Europe GSM-R in every test item despite the location constraint of train tracks on the base station establishment.

  • 실시간 영상회의 시스템을 인터넷상에서 다양하게 사용하려는 시도가 이루어지고 있다. 이런 부분의 연구는 오디오, 비디오 압축기법, 멀티미디어의 동기화, 다자간의 영상회의를 지원하기 위한 IP multicast 의 Mbone의 연구가 활발하게 이루어지고 있고, 통신의 회선속도가 고속화됨에 따라 인터넷에서 영상을 통한 다양한 멀티미디어 서비스가 이루어지고 있다. 개방형 분산 인터넷 통신망 환경에서의 영상회의는 영상회의 데이터인 영상 및 음성 보안에 대한 문제가 심각하게 대두된다. 본 논문에서는 실시간 영상회의에서 멀티미디어 데이터의 특성에 따른 보안 방법을 제시하고자 한다.

  • 본 연구는 정보 통신 투자가 경제 전반에 미치는 효과를 분석함으로써 초고속 정보 통신망 투자의 경제적 효율성을 검토하고자 했다. 정보 통신 산업에 대한 투자효과는 1980년 이후 계속된 투자인데 이 투자로 인해 1990년의 최종수요를 충족하기 위한 생산활동 과정에서 1990년 총소요 자원비용 금액 중 1조 5,567억원의 자원 절감 효과를 발생시킨 것으로 계산되었다.
