  • This paper summarizes the results of full-scale cyclic seismic performance tests on three column-tree type steel moment connections. Each test specimen consisted of a $H-600{\times}200$ beam and a $H-400{\times}400$ column of SS41 (SS400). Key parameter included was column PZ (panel zone) strength relative to beam strength. The seismic performance of specimen with stronger PZ tended to be inferior. Total plastic rotations available in the specimens ranged from 1.8 to 3.0 (% rad). The limited test results in this study seem to support the speculation that permitting PZ yielding shall be more beneficial to enhancing total plastic rotation capacity of the moment connection. Beam flange fracture across the heat affected zone and divot-type pullout of the column flange were observed in the tests. A conceptual mechanical model consistent with observed test results was also sought.

  • To examine the interaction of the floating pontoon with a steel moment resisting frame, the static structural analysis is carried out, in which the pressure load are calculated from the forgoing fluid dynamic analysis, varying the period of wave from 3 to 15 second and for 3 cases of depth of pontoon, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5m. As results, it has shown that RAO-pitch has the linear relationship with the increase of moment of the frame and the curvature of pontoon is reversely proportional to the stiffness of pontoon. By synthesizing these results, an estimation method is proposed, which predicts the moment of frame of the different depth of pontoon based on the analysis result of an arbitrary depth of a floating pontoon. The estimation result shows considerably good agreement, compared with the analysis result.

  • Based on previous research on steel moment connections, experimental and analytical results showed that the deformation capacity was poor in specimens using RHS columns and with conventional weld access holes and strain concentration at the end of beam is influenced by the efficiency in transmitting the moment in the web of beam through the beam-to-column joint. This paper is focused on the retrofitting of pre-Kobe steel moment frame connections using a stiffened RBS and a welded horizontal stiffener. These retrofitting methods were considered only in beam bottom flange. A parametric study was performed using nonlinear finite element analysis to elucidate and improve the retrofit methods of connections.

  • The building design projects which are being proceeded nowadays pursue a complex and various shape of structures, escaping from the traditional and regular shape of buildings. In this new trend of the architecture, there rises a demand of the research in the structural engineering for the effective realization of such complex-shaped buildings which disassembles the orthogonality of frames. As a distinguished characteristics of the buildings in a complex-shape, there frequently are inclined columns included in the structural frame. The inclined column causes extra axial force and bending moment at the beam-column connection so it is necessary to assess those effects on the structural behavior of the frame and the connection by experiment or analysis. However, with comparing to the studies on the normal beam-column connections, the inclined column connections have not been studied sufficiently. Therefore, this study evaluated the beam-column connections having an inclined column using nonlinear and finite element analysis method. In this paper, steel moment frames having inclined columns were analyzed by the nonlinear pushover analysis to check the global behavior and beam-column connection models were analyzed by the finite element analysis to check the buckling behavior and the fracture potentials.

  • Traditionally, domestic steel design and construction practice has provided extra shear studs to moment frame beams even when they are designed as non-composite beams. In the 1994 Northridge earthquake, connection damage initiated from the beam bottom flange side was prevalent. The upward moving of the neutral axis due to the composite action between steel beam and floor deck was speculated to be one of the critical causes. In this study, full-scale seismic testing was conducted to investigate the side effects of the composite action in steel seismic moment frames. The specimen PN700-C, designed following the domestic connection and floor deck details, exhibited significant upward shift of the neutral axis under sagging (or positive) moment, thus producing high strain demand on the bottom flange, and showed a poor seismic performance because of brittle fracture of the beam bottom flange at 3% story drift. The specimen DB700-C, designed by using RBS connection and with the details of minimized floor composite action, exhibited superior seismic performance, without experiencing any fracture or concrete crushing, almost identical to the bare steel counterpart (specimen DB700-NC). The results of this study clearly indicate that the beams and connections in seismic steel moment frames should be constructed to minimize the composite action of a floor deck if possible.

  • In this study, a five-story steel frame was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to evaluate the effects of the beam-column connection on the structural behavior. The connections were designed as fully rigid and semi-rigid. The fiber model was used to describe the moment-curvature relationship of the steel beam and the column, the power model for the moment-rotation angle of the semi-rigid connection and the three-parameter model for the hysteretic behavior of the steel beam, column, and connection. The structure was idealized as separate 2-D frames and as connected 2-D frames. The peak ground accelerations of four earthquake records were modified in a time-history analysis for the levels of the mean return period and for the maximum base-shear force in a pushover analysis. The top story displacement, base-shear force, story drift, demanded ductility ratio for the semi-rigid connection, maximum bending moment of the column, beam, and connection, and distribution of the plastic hinge were examined in the time-history analysis. The frame with the semi-rigid connection yielded a lower base-shear force, less magnitude, and increasing ratio in the bending moment of the column, beam, and connection than the frame with a fully rigid connection. The TSD connection was deemed to have secured the economy and safety of the sample structure that was subjected to seismic excitation for the Korean design level.

  • ASCE 7-10 defines the torsional irregular structure as the one that has large torsional responses caused by the eccentricity. The code requires that these structures should be designed abide by the torsional provisions. This study evaluates the influence of torsional provisions on the performance of the designed multiple steel moment frames with different eccentricity. In this study, 3D response history analyses are performed. The results show that the moment frame design according to the standard with torsional irregularity provisions showed larger performance as the eccentricity increased and the distribution of plastic hinges similarly to orthopedic structures.

  • The reduced beam section (RBS) steel moment connection has performed well in past numerous tests. However there still remain several design issues that should be further examined. One such issue on RBS connection performance is the panel zone strength. Although a significant amount of test data are available, a specific recommendation for a desirable range of panel zone strength versus beam strength has yet to be proposed. In this paper, the effects of panel zone strength on the cyclic performance of RBS connection are investigated based on the available test database from comprehensive independent testing programs. A criterion for a balanced panel zone strength that assures sufficient plastic rotation capacity while reducing the amount of beam buckling is proposed. Numerical studies to supplement the test results are then presented based on the validated finite element analysis. Satisfactory numerical simulation achieved in this study also indicates that numerical analysis based on quality finite element modeling can supplement or replace, at least in part, the costly full-scale cyclic testing of steel moment connections.
