  • Vegetational structure and successional sere were investigated for the evergreen and nearby deciduous broad-leaved forests in inland areas (Turyunsan, Pulgapsan) and south- western island areas (Hongdo, Chindo). The evergreen broad-leaved forests of the four areas showed a sera1 stage with an age structure mostly under fifty years old. Dominant evergreen broad-leaved species in canopy layer were Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Machilus thunbergii, Quercus acuta, Q. stenophylla, Q. glauca, and Ncolitsea serzceu. Succession of the forest vegetation in the surveyed areas was proceeding from deciduous broad-leaved trees to evergreen broad-leaved trees. The species of climax stage were assumed to be Machilus thunbergii, iVeolitseu sericea and Dendropanax morbifera in canopy layer, Aucuba japonica and Machilus japonica in subtree and shrub layer.

  • We investigated and analyzed three Korean island sites (Bijin-do, Ae-do, and Bogil-do) and one Japanese site (Tachibanayama) of sword-leaf litsea (Actinodaphne lancifolia) forests, known as the climax forest, to discuss the vegetation succession sere of warm-temperature evergreen broad-leaved forests. We then reviewed the literature in Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan to consider the distribution characteristics of evergreen broad-leaved forests, vegetation succession sere, and climax tree species. Although Mt. Tachibana and Ae-do showed the most advanced vegetation structure, the soil and ordination (CCA) analysis indicated that it was not enough to consider that the sword-leaf litsea forest was at the climax stage in the warm-temperature region. The Actinodaphne lancifolia forest is sparsely distributed in Korea and Japan while the common types of vegetation in the warm temperate zone region in East Asia are Machilus spp., Castanopsis spp., and Cyclobalanopsis spp. The vegetation succession sere of the Korean warm-temperature region is thought to have a secondary succession such as Pinus thunbergii, P. densiflora, Q. serrata (early stage) through Machilus thunbergii, innamomum yabunikkei, Neolitsea sericea, Actinodaphne lancifolia (middle stage) to Castanopsis sieboldii, Q. acuta, Q. salicina (climax stage). However, Machilus thunbergii will be the climax species as an edaphic climax in places where there is a strong influence of the sea wind, or it is difficult to supply the seeds of Castanopsis spp. and Cyclobalanopsis spp.

  • To investigate the vegetation structure of the Woraksan National Park, twenty-two plots were set up and surveyed. According to the analysis of classification by TWINSP AN, the communities were divided by six groups; Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata, Q. mongolica-Q. serrata, Q. mongolica-Betula davueica, P. densiflora-Q. mongolica, Q. mongolica, Q. mongolica-Acer pseudosieboldianum. Successional sere of the forest vegetation in the surveyed area were proeeding from Pinus densiflora to Quercus serrata, Quercus monogolica in the canopy layer group and from Rhododendron Rhododendron schlippenbachii to Fraxinus sieboldiana and Acer pseudosieboldianum in the understory layer group. But Q. mongolica might be edaphic climax species in some area.

  • To develop accurate and predictive global carbon cycle models, it is important to understand the change of accumulated carbon for many ecosystems according to successional stage. In this study, I measured total biomass, litter and soil organic matter contents through an aerial photo and field observation. As a result, accumulated organic matter contents per unit area (kg $m^{-2})$ of three communities composed at grassland were 7.00 kg $m^{-2}$, in Solidago altissima community, 9.18 kg $m^{-2}$, in Imperata cylindrica community, and 12.68 kg $m^{-2}$, in Miscanthus sinensis community, respectively. Accumulated total organic matter contents was high in Miscanthus sinensis community at later succession stage but soil carbon was low. In Miscanthus sinensis community, highly accumulated organic matter contents was resulted from increasing of biomass comparison with that of the other two communities. The pattern of accumulated organic matter contents was changed by changing of the dominant community due to progressing in succession. The accumulated carbon in temperate grassland will be increased with progressing in succession.

  • To study plant community structure and successional sere of the Kojedo District, Hallyo-Haesang National Park, fifty six plots were set up and surveyed(each plot $l00\m^2$). Fifty-six plots were classified into four community, Quercus variabilis-Zelkova serrata community(I), Q. variabilis-Cinnamomum japonicum-Neolitsea sericea community(II), Pinus thunbergii-C. japonicum-N. sericea community(III), P. thunbergii-P. densiflora community(IV) by TWINSPAN technique. Most area of forests in Kojedo district are artificial or coppice forest after artificial disturbance. The age of four community were about 35~40 years and the number of species 32~44 species per $600\m^2$. Ecological succession had been proceeded from deciduous broad-leaved species(Q. variabilis-Z. serrata etc.), P. thunbergii, P. densiflora to evergreen broad leaved forest(C. japonicum, N. sericea etc.).

  • On the basis of vegetation data by point quarter sampling method, the natural forest of Jirisan(Mt.) was classified into eight forest types by cluster analysis. They were Quercus mogolica forest type, Fraxinus mandshurica - Betula costata forest type, Mixed mesophytic forest type, Abies koreana forest type, Carpinus laxiflora forest type, Quercus serrata forest type, Pinus densiflora forest type, and Quercus variabilis forest type. Then, succession index was estimated for each forest type so as to evaluate succession process comparatively among forest types. The results showed that Carpinus laxiflora forest type had highest succession index of 219.7, followed by Mixed mesophytic forest type with little difference of the index of 218.3. Pinus densiflora forest type had lowest index. Succession indices were hardly correlated with species diversity indices of forest types. We presumed that the higher value of succession index a forest type had, the closer toward the climax forest. However, the estimated index was not supposed to be absolute level of successional stage, but it could play a role of comparative assessment in the position of the seral stage among forest types.

  • The purpose of this study examined the succession by vegetation type after forest ecosystem restoration in the Baramjae area. Vegetation of the Baramjae area was classified using a survey of 81 sites from May to October 2019. The vegetation type was classified as Pinus densiflora community group with both Quercus mongolica community and P. densiflora typical community. The group unit was further classified as the Quercus dentata typical subgroup, Salix koreensis subgroup, and Q. mongolica typical subgroup. Such as Q. mongolica, Quercus variavilis in vegetation unit 1, Q. mongolica, Q. dentata in vegetation unit 2, P. densiflora in vegetation unit 3 and S. koreensis in vegetation unit 4 were shown a high importance value. The difference in species by vertical layer is explained by sere. Based on the vegetation type classification system, Detrended Correspondence Analysis was conducted to observe the trend of succession. Since restoration, vegetation unit 1 and vegetation unit 2 were considered to have developed the most extensive vegetation. In vegetation unit 2 and vegetation unit 4, many of the species found were in the early vegetation development in S. koreensis subgroup. Accordingly, vegetation in the Baramjae area can be categorized as a stepwise succession.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the syntaxonomy of the pine forest in Youngdong region by the phytosociological methods. As a result of the investigation of 62 quadrats, Pinus densiflora forest was classified into four subassociations: Typical subassociation, Quercus mongolica subassociation, Rhododendron mucronulatum subassociation, Rhus chinensis subassociation. Many differences in ecological characteristics such as species composition, stratum structure, vegetation coverage and of diameter at breast height(DBH) of class distribution were found among the communities. Soil properties of the pine forest on the study area was relatively poor compared with other pine forests, especially, soil pH was strongly acidic with 4.87. Soil conditions among the subassociations appeared different. Future succession of pine forest by the similarity index of communities was proposed. Estimated degree of green naturality for Typical subassociation and Q. mongolica subassociation correspond to 7th grade, and R. mucronulatum subassociation, 8-1st grade, and R. chinensis subassociation, 8-2nd grade.

  • A survey of Popju Temple district. was conducted using 70 sample plots of 500$m^2$ size. The classification by TWINSPAN and DCA ordination were applied to the study area in order to classify them into several groups based on woody plants and environmental variables. By both techniques. the plant com-munity were divided into six groups by the altitude and soil moisture. The successional trends of tree species seem to be from Pinus densiflora, Sorbus alnifolia through Quercus serrata to Carpinus laxiflora and from P. densiflora, Fraxinus sieboldiana through Q. mongolica in the canopy layer, and from Lespedeza cyrtobotrya, Rhus trichocarpa, Zanthoxylum schnifolium through Rhododendron mucronulatum, Corylus sieboldiana, Lindera obtusiloba, Magnclia sieboldii to Euonymus sieboldianus in the understory and shrub layer. The species diversity of the plant community in the burnt plot was decreased by the forest fire but the importance values of Quercus species were increased in above plot.
