The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics and detergency of natural surfactants for the cleaning of excavated fabrics. For this purpose, SDS, a synthetic surfactant, was selected as the control, and five types of natural surfactants, namely, LES, apple wash, tea saponin, cornacopa, and coco betaine were selected. The structures of the surfactants were confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy analysis, and the characteristics of the surfactants were determined by measuring the pH and surface tension. In addition, detergency testing was carried out on four artificially soiled fabrics and fragments of excavated fabrics. From the results, apple wash, tea saponin, and cornacopa were found to be as good as SDS in terms of detergency in the cleaning of artificially soiled fabrics, and the detergency of tea saponin and coco betaine was found to be good for cleaning excavated fabrics. Therefore, considering the safety and detergency of detergents, among natural surfactants, tea saponin is found to be most suitable for the cleaning of excavated fabrics.

In the cosmetics industry, many raw materials such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin have been developed and studied as moisturizing agents for long-lasting moisturizing effects. In this study, we investigated changes in moisture and transdermal water loss of skin by changing the surfactant, instead of the moisturizing agent. Particularly, surfactant types such as natural surfactant, lecithin surfactant, polyglyceryl ester surfactant, peg Surfactant and peg w/o surfactant showed changes in moisture and transdermal water loss according to the changes of their surfactants. The best results were obtained when using Lecithin surfactant.
Surfactants which have ability to decrease surface tension through surface activation between the interfaces are used as essential major raw materials for detergents and cosmetics. Typical synthetic detergents such as EO (ethylene oxide), LAB (linear alkylbenzene) are made from chemical surfactant derived from petrochemicals, therefore, they are responsible for major environment contaminations and ecosystem destruction, especially of rivers and also cause atopic dermatitis through strong skin stimulus of these small molecular's powerful permeability and lead to cancers if they get into organs through capillary. Now worldwide interest is increasing to develop new natural surfactants and biosurfactants as ecological, biodegradabl, harmless and multi-functional new amphiphillic materials which replace these synthetic surfactants.
In this study, two types of amino acids-based anionic biosurfactants such as potassium cocoyl glutamate (CTK) and sodium cocoyl glutamate (CTN) were synthesized from coconut oils and the structure elucidation of CTK and CTN was carried out by using FT-IR, $^1H-NMR$ and $^{13}C-NMR$ spectrophotometries. Measurements of interfacial properties such as static and dynamic surface tensions and emulsification activity showed that both CTK and CTN were surface-active and effective in lowering the interfacial free energy. In particular, the CTK surfactant was found to be more efficient in reducing the interfacial free energy since the larger number of CTK molecules was preferentially adsorbed at the air-water interface due to the higher hydrophobicity and larger mobility of CTK than those of using CTN, indicating possible uses in cosmetics and household products formulation.
In the Chosun period, the noble class usually buried the dead bodies in the lime-covered tomb. Recently their costumes are excavated while maintaining the shape. However, the textiles discovered from the inside have been degradated by a body and moisture. To conserve these textiles one of the most important thing is how to clean these textiles right after the excavation. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of wet cleaning to minimize the color change of textile remains. For this purpose, silk and cotton were dyed with natural dyes (7 red, 1 blue, 6 yellow, 4 green and 4 purple colors), then they were kept for 6 months with pork meat at $10^{\circ}C$, and were washed by four cleaning solutions (water, anionic surfactant (SDS), non-ionic surfactant (Triton X-100) and natural surfactant (saponin)) at $20^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$. The color change was evaluated by color difference (${\Delta}E$) between non-treated and after washed samples. From the results, it was found that the color changes are significantly different depending on the washing temperature, textile material, the cleaning agents and the type of dyes.
Natural zeolites which were known to occur in sedimentary clinoptilolite, were treated by thermal and chemical methods, and their adsorption characteristics of Cu(II) were studied. Analyses by FT-IR, S. E. M, TGA/DSC, and XRD showed that the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) on the zeolite decreased gradually at the temperatures of above $400^{\circ}C$. The zeolites, which treated with NaOH and NaCl, show higher absorbility in acid solution. The adsorption rate of Cu(II) in the presence of surfactants(LAS, POE AE) on the thermally or chemically treated zeolites varied depending on pH, anion or nonion surfactants.

In this research, organic extracts from roots of platycodon grandiflorum was tested to see the possibility for cosmetic natural surfactant. Interfacial properties of extracts of Platycodon grandiflorum was checked for interfacial tension, forming force, dispersion force, emulsion force, emulsion activity, and emulsion stability. At 0.005 wt% concentration, the interfacial tension against the caster oil was 11.5 dyn/cm which was lower than that of Tween 40 and quillaja bark. Extracts of Platycodon grandiflorum showed excellent emulsification activity and stability for cosmetic oils such as olive oil, soybean oil, and canola oil. In patch test using 2-5% of the extract and glycerin, the extract showed mild skin irritation. From the experiment, the extracts of platycodon grandiflorum root showed good interfacial properties as a cosmetic agent with minor skin irritation.
A surfactant is used to assist the effect of cleaning, dispersibility and adhesion during leather manufacturing process. Existing surfactant for that process includes many hydrophilic groups that may cause problem such as stain, bad water resistance and poor durability, etc. It is potential problem to make high-performance property for future leather market. In this study, we have synthesized the fluorinated surfactant of which property decreases surface tension, increases dispersion, cleaning effect and the better chrome absorption by the high bond energy of C-F to complement weakness that the present alkyl derivative surfactants have. Using fluorinated surfactant, we can confirm that dispersion is increased, chrome absorption ratio is augmented with high osmosis and coherence, chrome content in the tanning waste water is reduced, BOD and COD contents are diminished and physical characteristics are improved.
Polyurethane foams were synthesized by substituting a portion of petroleum base polyether polyol with castor oil-derived polyol(COP). Contact angle tester and surface tensionmeter were used to examine the compatibility of petroleum base polyether polyol and COP. To investigate the optimum content of COP and surfactant, the content of COP has been changed from 0 wt% to 80 wt%. From the results of polyurethane foams synthesized by surfactant L-580K, DC-5950 and BF-2470, the best mechanical properties was observed when the content of COP was 30wt% and surfactant BF-2470.
