  • Recently, the mining methods are changing from surface mining to underground mining because of the increment of the environmental issues and legal regulations. Therefore, the stability of underground openings is a major concern for the safety and productivity of mining operations. In this paper, a survey of structural geology and discontinuities were carried out at a limestone mine. The relevant mechanical properties of rocks were determined by the laboratory tests and rock mass classifications (RMR and Q-system) for the mine design and input data for the stability analysis. The dimensions of unsupported span for underground openings and pillar were decided based on the RMR values of rock mass classifications. The stability analysis for the suggested mine design was examined through the empirical methods (stability graph method and critical span curve) and 3-D numerical analysis (Visual-FEA).

  • These days, mining industry prefers underground development for large mining because of exhaustive minning resources and large drafts and mining cavities thanks to extensive distribution of heavy excavation machines. In a mining design, to control collapse of cavities and secure stability, design of cavities and pillars are considered as very important. Therefore, this study obtained a prediction equation of blasting vibration through instrumentation for underground cavities. And we obtained theoretical shock vibration imposed on pillar through fragmentation analysis and measurement of flyrock distance. To examine the influence of pillar in underground mining blasting, we carried a finite element analysis and compared the result with prediction equation of blasting vibration, and shock vibration of flyrock when a impact was imposed on pillar and theoretical shock vibration.

  • In surface mining, it is very important to create a mining area for economical mining. This study examined the contribution of design factors on slope stability with different slope design and blasting conditions. The design factors were the properties of the rock, the slope angle and the bench height, and the blasting conditions were reflected at different explosive weight and distances. The safety factor of slope was calculated by shear strength reduction method through 3D modeling, and the contribution rate of rock slope was 94.8%, which is relatively higher than other design factors, slope angle 0.89%, bench height 0.58%, and blasting It is shown that it affects about 3.73%, and it can be seen that blasting at a close distance can affect the stability of the slope.

  • In this study global radiation and global illumination are directly measured and diffuse radiation and diffuse illumination measured utilizing semi-circular shadow ring. By analyzing measured radiation data, clear and overcast sky are classified according to the sky classification method used in Mantes, France. Measured illumination data are analyzed and 1) Clear sky illumination on a horizontal surface as a function of solar altitude. 2) Overcast sky illumination on a horizontal surface as a function of solar altitude, 3) Monthly variation of illumination. 4) Cumulative percentage of illumination, 5) Daylight intensity as a function of hours in a typical day, 6) Average number hours per day of illumination above 10 and 20klx are presented as a climatic data for daylighting design for Seoul, Korea.
