There is something valuable in Korean traditional architecture that does not change even after more than a number of years. Each design element of traditional houses has its own role to embody natural, healthy, and environment-friendly architectural planning. With traditional already-built examples located in the northern area of Gyeongbuk province, this study attempts to untangle some of the daylighting control issues in opening design. By looking at more than just photometric materials, at some threshold level, the whole of daylighting control characteristics of their openings is being surveyed from the viewpoint of geometric relationship between their roof structures and windows. As a glazing material, in addition, Korean traditional window covering paper, Changhoji, is evaluated for its transmittal performance under artificial and real skies as well.

우리나라의 한지는 세계에서 가장 우수한 종이요 천년 세월을 견뎌내는 것은 물론 썩지도 않는다. 2~7세기 사이에 전래된 것으로 추측되는 우리의 한지는 닥나무를 재료로 하고 있는데 창문용으로 사용되는 창호지는 바람과 빛을 통과시키고 습도까지 조절하는 기능까지 갖추고 있어 '살아있는 종이'라고도 한다.

얼마전까지만 해도 우리나라는 조용한 아침의 나라, 동방예의지국이라 예찬되어 왔으며, 아름다운 산하는 금수강산이라 불리어져 왔다. 비록 창호지 한장으로 바른 창문이었지만 소음공해같은 것은 결코 느끼지 않고 살았으며, 창호지를 통하여 전달되는 첫새벽의 닭우는 소리는 소음이라기 보다는 장부의 단잠을 깨워주는 자연음으로서의 낭만이 있었다. 그러나, 이젠 사정이 크게 달라졌다. 지난 40년 동안에 우리나라 경제가 고도성장을 이룩함으로써 우선 국민생활은 풍요로와 겼으나 대소 공장과 사업장 및 교통혼잡으로부터 The아져 나온 각종 오염물질이 엄청나게 증가하여 호흡하는 공기와 마시는 물, 곡물이 자양되는 토양은 병들어 가고 있을 뿐만 아니라 옛날에는 생각지도 못했던 온갖 소음ㆍ진통으로 우리는 포장되어 살아가고 있다 해도 과언이 아니다. $\ulcorner$소음진동규제법$\lrcorner$에 소음이란 기계ㆍ기구ㆍ시설 기타 물체의 사용으로 인하여 발생한 강한 소리라 정의하고 있다. 말할 것도 없이 이는 인위적으로 발생되는 시끄러운 소리를 의미하며, 이러한 소음을 다소나마 피하기 위해 창문을 알루미늄샤시 유리창으로 바꾸어 커텐을 치고, 출입문을 두중한 원목 도어로 교체 해도 다양해지고 강해진 소음공해를 막기는 어려운 세상이 되 었다. 이로 인하여 우리는 생활의 안정을 위협 받게 되었으며, 학업과 생업에 크고 작은 장해를 받으며 살아가고 있는 것이 오늘의 현실이다. 정부ㆍ기업ㆍ국민 각자가 쾌적한 환경을 보전하고자 하는 확고한 의지와 배경이 없다면 후손들에게도 대물림 될 것임에 틀림없으며, 특히 이러한 현상은 도회지에서 더욱 심화될 것임은 명약관화하다 하겠다.

This research was performed to investigate the physical and mechanical properties of Chanhoji manufactured with the traditional method. This research would provide a basic information for its application in the manufacture of Korean-style house. A piece of Changhoji was manufactured to have a weight of 3.75 g. The weight was increased with the basic weight and no increase was not found on its density. The strength properties of Changhoji are superior to a copying paper, and the quality showed the first grade in Korean Standard (KS M 7301). The air resistance varied with the thickness from 2 to 19 seconds, but it showed better performance than a copying paper having 38 seconds. This research would be used for the practical use in understanding the ventilation and lightening properties of windows and doors in Korean-style house.

Korean traditional houses have been developed in sympathy with natural environment and formed comfortable indoor condition by properly using surrounding natural resources including building layout, space construction and material our traditional wooden windows adjusting ambient temperature and humidity have both the functions of window and door, although they are clearly divided in the West. While window paper is attached from the outside in China and Japan, it is attached from the inside in Korea. The opening and closing mode of windows is similar and their dimensions are shown not to he standardized but diverse in terms of the characteristic of wooden furniture and that of components placed between columns. Thus this study is to look into the performance of band-lattice door of a typical traditional one by observing changes in sound absorption characteristics according to difference in thickness and finishing method of window paper and those in sound absorption characteristics with the changed thickness of air layer in traditional windows and doors.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional properties of Changhoji with natural dyeing. This research would provide a basic information for interior material Changhoji. To estimate functional properties of super eight colors Changhoji, water staining, lightfastness, and floodlight color test were executed. In term of the water staining test, blue color showed the clear and other colors showed the little spot. As a result of measuring the lightfastness, Magenta color dyed with sappanwood showed the worst. But blue color dyed with indigo and Turquoise color dyed with indigo and Pagoda tree flower showed the highest. As a result of floodlight color test was no difference between sample color and floodlight color.

The purpose of this study was to manufacture colored Hanji for interior materials by combining color therapy and natural dyeing. To manufacture colored Changhoji for interior materials, seven species of dyestuff were selected as a results of preliminary natural dyeing. As mordants, 0.5% $AlK(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_20$ and 0.5% $Cu(CH_3COO)_2{\cdot}H_2O$ solution were used respectively. To estimate natural dyeing properties of Changhoji, the value of $L^*,\;a^*,\;b^*$ and Munsell HV/C were measured by spectrophotometer. The super eight colors produced as follows; red from safflower, orang from goldthread and gardenia, yellow from turmeric, green and turquoise from indigo and pagoda tree flower, violet and magenta from sappanwood, and blue from indigo.

Recently reinforced retaining walls secure their position as a stabilized method of construction replacing concrete retaining walls gradually. However, in the event of using extensible reinforcement, a bulging phenomenon can be happened in the front of reinforced retaining walls. Bulging of reinforced retaining walls means a phenomenon that, in the height of an arbitrary block, the upper part and the lower part of the block don't secure a relative position in design. Therefore, it is judged that it has the necessity to be examined in design since reinforcement needs metamorphosis to some degree to display tensile force. Therefore, the study examined about how extensibility of reinforcement had an effect on movement of reinforced retaining walls through a small-scale model test with aluminum rods. The study used Changhoji(traditional korean paper made from mulberry bark) as inextensible reinforcement and membrane as extensible reinforcement. As the result of the test, rigidity of reinforcement had a lot of effects on displacement of reinforced retaining walls and generally occurrence point of the maximum horizontal displacement had a tendency transferring to the upper part of walls according to rigidity of reinforcement was increased.

Korean traditional paper is more than paper itself to the Korean people because of its excellence, compared to western paper, in keeping records, flexibility, strength. air permeability. and blocking ultraviolet rays. It has been used for various purposes such as book-making. covering for walls. windows or floors. making clothes and living appliances. and so on. Notwithstanding these merits. mass-produced paper has been substituted for Korean paper. Recently, however, there is a growing tendency to re-evaluate Korean paper because of its physiochemical properties. traditional beauty. eco-friendliness. and applicability to crafts. Korean paper deserves widely received re-evaluation as teaching materials for the education of ecology. creativity. and traditional arts. The purpose of this study was to find out a way of using Korean paper as sewing materials in Practical Arts classes for the elementary school. Previous researches on what properties Korean paper has and how many kinds of crafts have been made of Korean paper were reviewed. Concrete methods of utilizing Korean paper as sewing materials. especially for the finishing skills of sewing. were also proposed.
