This paper begins with investigation of the race to unlock human DNA, and investigates the emergent areas of bio-technological innovations. This paper draws upon basic ideas from the research traditions of the diffusion of innovations in the competitive situations. To achieve the succesful diffusion of bio-technological innovations, following issues are suggested; clusters, alliances competence, core competence, consumer resistance, chasm phenomena, qualitative research, social network, and cross-culture. The better understanding of the diffusion of bio-tech innovations with empirical studies can complement research on the diffusion of bio-technological innovations and help in the development of a universal model for diffusion of high technological innovations.

This study attempts to analysis the roles of national laboratories in the context of regional innovation systems and the contribution to local economic development in the case of Taedok Science Park in Korea. It also tries comparative studies between Taedok Science Park and some European experiences. Recently the role of national laboratories as key innovation agents for regional development strategies is emphasized in European countries. In the similar context, national laboratories have explicit missions to assist in the formations of new firms and to support existing small and medium-sized enterprises in their localities. It is found that these functions are largely present and become more important in Taedok, but that the linkages between national laboratories and local firms are still weaker than some European countries. This study concludes that national laboratories in Korea should reinforce the industry-research linkages with local economic activities in the region to stimulate cooperation activities.
In the past, technology commercialization was implemented in a narrow sense, such as technology transfer or start-up support. It has been pointed out that lack of entrepreneurial experience, failure in technology development, and insecure markets lead to failure of technology commercialization. The project supporting direct commercialization of technologies owned by academic and research institutes conjoins public funds and operating power of large enterprises to introduce a new technology commercialization model that combines commercialization technology with capital, market, and government policies. And pain points for direct commercializing technology was derived. Through research and analysis, a gap was found between the demand factors and the capability of the actors performing the technology commercialization, and it showed a significant correlation with the paint points. In consequence, measures were drawn to improve support policies to enhance the efficiency of commercialization of technologies held by universities and research institutes.

This study focuses on Hokkaido University Research & Business Park in Japan as an example of establishing a regional innovation ecosystem on campus based on the outstanding research and university-industry collaboration capabilities of local universities in non-metropolitan areas with weak foundations for start-ups and corporate growth. Hokkaido University Research & Business Park established a mid-to long-term plan using the idle sites on campus, and was developed through a gradual development process since 2003. The promotion of university-industry collaboration was pursued through an industrial-based approach of establishing a bio-industry cluster considering the characterization of local universities and the foundation of local industries. It also provides various corporate support services through cooperative governance between local industry, universities, research institutes and the government. This strategy for creating Hokkaido University Research & Business Park provides important policy implications for various policies and projects that promote regional development by utilizing university campuses like the campus innovation park project.
Amid the growing importance and growth potential of venture firms worldwide, this study aimed to figure out the effect of new product development capabilities (NPDC) on the internationalization of Korean venture firms and the moderating impact of founders' human capital. NPDC is a core competency that can cope with the rapidly changing market environment and is required when entering multinational markets. Therefore, we subdivided founders' human capital into professional experience, startup experience, education level, and marketing capacity and examined each moderating effect on a venture firm's internationalization. As a result of empirical analysis of 1,362 Korean venture firms using the Tobit model, this study found that venture firms with excellent NPDC tend to achieve a higher level of internationalization. In addition, among the founder's human capitals, professional experience, education level, and marketing competency moderated the positive relationship between NPDC and internationalization. In contrast, the founder's startup experience was insignificant. The results of this empirical analysis explain the factors that trigger the internationalization performance of venture firms from the perspective of dynamic capabilities and suggest that the founder's human capital played an essential role in the internationalization.
