To understand the geochemical processes in the Han River Estuary, distributions and behaviors of nutrients, dissolved organic matters, and uranium were investigated and analyzed during estuarine tidal mixing in June 2000 and February 2001. The distribution of inorganic nutrients showed very dynamic distributional patterns implying an apparent nitrification process and a concave non-conservative mixing along the salinity gradient. Dissolved organic carbon was high in the upstream region and decreased sharply in the low salinity region of around 5 psu. The 3-D fluorescence characteristic of dissolved organic matter showed two distinct fluorophores in the study area. Biomacromolecules originated mainly from the indigenous biochemical processes and geomacromolecules from terrestrial humic materials. In the study area, the distribution of geomacromolecule showed a concave non-conservative property along the salinity gradient presumably due to the flocculation and removal processes in the estuary. Meanwhile, distribution of the dissolved uranium, mainly in the form of stable uranium carbonate complex, also showed a concave non-conservative property along the salinity gradient in the Han River Estuary. From this study, the removal rate of dissolved uranium in the Han River Estuary was estimated to be about 7.1 ton per year.
A mercury ion-sensitive carbon-paste electrode (CPE) was constructed with l-sparteine. Mercury (II) ion was chemically deposited by the complexation with l-sparteine onto the CPE. The surface of CPEs was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and anodic stripping voltammetry in an acetate buffer solution, separately. Exposure of CPEs to acid solution could regenerate surface and reuse it for deposition. In 5 deposition/measurement/regeneration cycle, the response was reproducible and in licnear up to $2.0\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$ M with linear sweep voltammetry. In case of using the differential pulse technique, we have obtained the linear response up to $7.0 {\times}10^{-7}$ M with relative standard deviation of ${\pm}5.1$%. The detection limit was $5.0{\times}10^{-7}$ M for 20 minutes of the deposition. We have investigated the interference effect of various metal ions, which are expected to form the complex with ligand. Silver (I) ion of these has interfered with the analysis of Hg (II) ions. However, pretreatment of the silver (I) ion with potassium chloride led to no interference on the analysis of mercury ions in aqueous solution.
The semiconducting $(Pb_1\;_xSn_x)_1$$_yTe_y$, one of the low - temperature thermoelectric materials, has been prepared and its chemical composition and nonstoichiometry has been analyzed. The content of Pb in the specimens was determined by the complexometric back - titration method with EDTA and Pb(II) standard solutions. Te - content was analyzed with the redox titration method. The electrical conductivity and the thermoelectric power have also been measured by the DC 4 - probe and the heat-pulse technique, respectively. All of the specimens showed a nonstoichiometric behavior in their chemical compositions (Te excess), thus gave rise to a p - type semiconducting property, and the nonstoichoimetry became bigger as the Sn - content increased. The thermoelectric power vs. temperature results have been analyzed upon the basis of the Fermi level vs. temperature profiles in the saturation regime. The specimen of x=0.1 evolved a transition from p - to n - type property at about 670K, which has been explained by the fact that the mobility of electrons is bigger than that of holes in the temperature range of the intrinsic regime.
Oxygen reduction in an alkaline fuel cell was studied by using perovskite type oxides as an oxygen electrode catalyst. The high surface area catalysts were prepared by malic acid method and had a formula of $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$(x=0.00, 0.01, 0.10, 0.20, 0.35 and 0.50). From the result of XRD pattern and specific surface area due to the amount of Fe substitution and the consumption of ammonia-water, the complex formation of Fe ion with $NH_3$ was the main factor for both the phase stability of perovskite and the increase of specific surface area. Multi-step calcination was necessary to give a single phase of perovskite in catalyst precursor. The crystal structure of the catalysts was simple cubic perovskite, which was verified from the XRD patterns of the catalysts. The activity of oxygen reduction was monitored by the techniques of cyclic voltammetry, static voltage-current method, and current interruption method. The activity(current density) of oxygen reduction showed its minimum at x=0.01 and its maximum between 0.20 and 0.35 of x-value in $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$. This tendency was independent of the change of surface area.

The redox properties of benzophydroxamic acid (Hben) and its oxovanadium complex, $VO(Ben)_2$ has been studied by the use of polarograpy and cyclic voltammetry. The radical anions of Hben seem to be generated in acetone. The wave at -0.05V vs. Ag/AgCl electrode might be attributed to the formation of radical anion and the wave at -1.78V vs. Ag/AgCl electrode might be attributed the formation of radical dianion. The $VO(Ben)_2$ exhibits one oxidation wave at + 0.55V and two reduction waves at -0.15V and -1.30V vs. Ag/AgCl electrode; the oxidation is reversible one electron process $(VO(ben)_2 {\rightleftharpoons} VO(ben)^+ + e)$. The reduction wave at -0.15V is quasireversible and is arised from the formation of radical anion,$VO(Ben)_2^-$. The second reduction wave at -1.30V is irreversible and this reduction process produces vanadium(III). This oxygen containing ligand of Hben seems to reduce the stability of + 4 oxidation state of vanadium while the sulfur or nitrogen donor of the ligands stabilize the + 4 oxidation state of vanadium when comparisons are made among several oxovanadium complexes.
A cobalt(II) ion-selective carbon-paste electrode (CPE) was constructed with ${\iota}$-sparteine. Cobalt(II) ion in aqueous solution was chemically deposited through the complexation with ${\iota}$-sparteine onto the CPE. The surface of CPEs were characterized by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry in an acetate buffer solution, separately. Exposure of the CPEs to an acid solution could regenerate surface to reuse it for the deposition. In more than 5 deposition / measurement / regeneration cycles, the response was reproducible and linear up to $5.0{\times}10^{-6}$M with linear sweep voltammetry. The peaks at 0.17V / 0.27V were correspond to the redox of Co(II)-SP complex deposited on CPE. The anodic peak of which appeared after scan over the cathodic peak of 0.17 V to more negative scan. In case of using the differencial pulse voltammetry (DPV), we have obtained the linear response $2.0{\times}10^{-7}$M with relative standard deviation ${\pm}5.6%$. The detection limit was $1.0{times}10^{-7}$M for 20 minutes of the deposition. We have also investigated the interference effect of various metal ions, which are expected to form the complex with the ligand on the electrode.
The crystal structure Tris(ethylenediamine)nickel(II)Dichromate has been determined by X-ray crystallography. Crystal data: a=8.268(2), b=13.865(2), c=14.921(2)Å, γ=102.04(2)°, V=1672.9(5)Å3, Z=4, Monocline, P21/b (space group No.=14), Dcalc=1.806 gcm-3, μ=24.05 cm-0.1. The intensity data were collected with Mo-Kα radiation(λ=0.7107Å) on an automatic four-circle diffractometer with a graphite monochromator. The structure was solved by Patterson method and refined by full matrix least-square methods using unit weights. The final R and S values were R=0.045, Rw=0.051, Rall=0.059 and S=2.171for 2248 observed reflections. The two carbon atoms of a ring of Ni(en)-ion were split into crossed four atoms. In consideration of α- and β-angles of two rings of a disordered ethylenediamine of Nien3-ion and the hydrogen bonds between Ni(en)3-cation and Cr2O7-anion, the configuration of Ni(en)3-ion is assumed to be disordered with Λδδδ and Λδδλ.

A small scale combustion unit was built to evaluate the CO suppression effects by various chemical additives added to coal briquettes. Among the additives tested comprising various transition metal compounds with catalytic activities, natural minerals and oxidizing agents, the copper component has shown the best CO suppression effect, and in particular, copper oxide dispersed on porous supports such as ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was most effective. For instance, 0.5% of copper added to coal briquettes in this way bas exhibited 1.4 % CO in the combustion gas at the ignition and beginning stage of combustion and 0.3 % CO at the final stage. The effects of calcium compounds on the fixation of sulfur in coal were also evaluated to reduce the contents of sulfur compounds in the combustion gases.
A humic acid(HA, Aldrich Co) sample was subjected to ultrafiltration for molecular size fractionation and three fractions of different nominal size($F_1$: 1,000-10,000 daltons; $F_2$: 10,000-50,000 daltons; $F_3$: 100,000-300,000 daltons) were obtained. The structural characteristics of the size-fractionated HA were analyzed using their IR and solid state C-13 NMR spectral data, and the carboxylate group contents of the humic acids were determined using their pH titration data. The $^7F_0-{^5}D_0$ excitation spectra of Eu(III) complexes of the size-fractionated mgHA in aqueous solution were acquired($[Eu(III)]=1.0{\times}10^{-4}mol\;L^{-1}$, $(HA)=470-970mg\;L^{-1}$) at pH 5.0 using a pulsed tunable laser system, in which metal binding properties of the size-fractionated HA were elucidated and compared on another. Characterization of the IR and C-13 NMR spectral data indicated that the fraction($F_3$) with molecules of larger size were primarily aliphatic, while the fractions($F_1$, $F_2$) with smaller molecules of less than 50,000 daltons were predominantly aromatic. Titration data were consistent with an increase in the number of carboxylate groups per unit mass as molecular size became smaller. The $^7F_0-{^5}D_0$ excitation spectral data of Eu(III)-humate complexes showed that the peak maxima on these spectra were shifted toward lower energies with increasing molecular size of HA, indicating the higher degree of bindings of the Eu in the molecules of larger size. We also discussed the relationship of the lower energy shifts of the maximum peaks with increasing the molecular size of HA with the structural differences of the size-fractionated HA.
