  • Copper(Ⅱ) complexes with N,N'-oxalylbis(salicylaldehydehydrazone), N,N'-malonylbis(salicylaldehydehydrazone) and N,N'-succinylbis(salicylaldehydehydrazone) have been prepared in 95% DMF. Their protonation and stability constants were investigated by potentiometric titration. We observed that MBSH ligand showed the largest protonation constant. The values of the protonation constants among three different ligands were increased as following order SBSH < OBSH < MBSH. However, the increasing order of stability constants was somewhat different such as Cu(Ⅱ)-SBSH < Cu(Ⅱ)-MBSH < Cu(Ⅱ)-OBSH. In addition, thermodynamic parameters, ΔH and ΔS of Cu(Ⅱ) complexes have been studied. As a result, we found the SBSH ligand produced the best stable copper (Ⅱ) complex.

  • The formation constants of the complexes between Ln-EDTA 1 : 1 complex and IMDA have been investigated by a potentiometric titration method at 20.0${\pm}$0.2 degree C and ${\mu}$ = 0.1 (KNO$_3$). Unusually large stability in Ln(EDTA) mixed ligand complexes was found. Trends in the formation constants vs. atomic number of the lanthanide metals were discussed on the basis of coordination number and ionic radius of the metals.

  • The uranium(VI) complexes with new unsaturated macrocyclic ligands of cryptand types and the neodymium(III) complexes with cryptand 222 and DBC ligands have been investigated polarographically in dimethylsulfoxide solvent. The reduction states, electron numbers involved in the reduction process, effects of the added acid on the polarograms of complexes, and the mechanisms of the reduction electrode reactions have been examined. The stability constants and mole-ratio of new complexes were also obtained by polarographic method. The reaction of ligands was controlled by the diffusion in the reduction with four electrons at a step, whereas the redox reaction with six electrons at three steps in $UO_2\;^{2+}$ complexes with macrocyclic ligands and the redox reaction with one electron at a step in $Nd^{3+}$ complexes with cryptand 222 and DBC have been observed. The imine ligands formed stable complexes with uranium(VI) above pH 7.0, and the neodymium(III) complexes with cryptand 222 and DBC ligands were stable above pH 4.0.

  • The maximum absorption wavelengths of charge-transfer complexes of naphthalene, ${\alpha}-and{\beta}-methyl$ naphthalene and 1,2-, 2,3-and 2,6-dimethyl naphthalene with chloranil have been measured with a UV spectrophotometer in ethylene chloride, methylene chloride, and chloroform at 10, 15, 20, and 25$^{\circ}C$. This absorption band was interpreted as the charge transfer band of a 1 : 1 molecular complex, and the maximum absorption wavelength was changed as a function of solvent and temperature. Their formation constants (K$_f$) were decreased with the polarity of solvent and the increase of temperature. Thus, the influences of solvent and temperature on the formation constant have been discussed as consideration of thermodynamic properties, and the electronic and steric effects of electron donors on formation constant have been also discussed.

  • The complexation of hydrazide schiff base ligands such as N,N'-oxalylbis(salicylaldehyde hydrazone), N,N'-malonylbis(salicylaldehyde hydrazone), and N,N'-succinylbis(salicylaldehyde hydrazone) with Cd(II) ion was studied by polarographic method in DMSO solution. The order of stability constants was OBSH < MBSH < SBSH, and these ligands formed stable complexes with Cd(II) ion. The stability constants of complexation were measured at various temperatures. As the results, ${\Delta}$H and ${\Delta}$S of the complexation were distributed on the complex stabilities.

  • The complex formation constants (${\beta}_{MLn}$) of potassium and various sodium-selective neutral carriers in solvent polymeric membranes have been determined using solvent polymeric membrane-based optodes and ion-selective electrodes (ISEs). Two different types of PVC-based membranes containing the H^+selective chromoionophore (ETH 5294) with and without a sodium ionophore (4-tert-bntylcalix[4]arenetetraacetic acid tetraethyl ester, ETH 2120, bis[(12-crown-4)methyl] dodecylmethylmalonate or monensin methyl ester) were prepared and their optical responses to either the changes in alkali metal cation (e.g., sodium and potassium) concentrations at a fixed pH (0.05 M Tris-HCl, pH 7.2) or varying pH at a fixed alkali metal cation concentration (0.1 M) were measured. The same type of membranes were also mounted in conventional electrode body and their potentiometric responses to varying pH at a fixed alkali metal cation concentration (0.1 M) were measured. The complex formation constants of the ligand could be calculated from the calibration plots of the relative absorbance vs. the activity ratios of cation and proton ($a_{M^+}/a_{H^+}$) and of the emf vs. pH. It was confirmed that the ratio values of the complex formation constants for the primary and interfering ions are closely related to the experimental selectivity coefficients of ISEs.

  • The effect of pressure and temperature on the stabilities of the benzene-iodine charge transfer complex have been investigated through ultraviolet spectrophotometric measurements in n-hexane. The stabilities of the complexes were measured at temperatures of 25, 40 and $60^{\circ}C$ up to 1600 bars. The equilibrium constant of the complex formation was increased with pressure and decreased with temperature raising. The absorption coefficient was increased with both pressure and temperature. Changes of volume, enthalpy, free energy and entropy for the formation of complexes were obtained from the equilibrium constants. The red-shift at a higher pressure, the blue-shift at a higher temperature and the relation between pressure and oscillator strength were discussed by means of thermodynamic functions.

  • The protonation and stability constants of complexation of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II), Hg(II) ion with sulfur-containing podand ligands such as tri(phenylthio-2-ethy1)amine (Podand N$_1$S$_3$)tetra(phenylthio-2-ethyl)ethylenediamine (Podand N$_2$S$_4$) , tris(1-benzylaminoethyl)amine (Podand N$_4$) have been determined by potentiometric titration in 95% methanol at variable temperatures, From these studies, we observed that podand N$_4$ ligand showed the largest protonation constant. Protonation constant, stability constant, enthalpy, entropy of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II), Hg(II),ions increased with the following order podand N$_1$S$_3$$_2$S$_4$$_4$.

  • Charge transfer complexes of some electron donors with one electron acceptor have been studied to investigate the maximum absorption wavelength and absorbance by UV-Vis spectrometer in three kinds of solvents, such as ethylene chloride, methylene chloride, and chloroform, at the temperature ranges of 16∼25$^{\circ}$C. 1,2,3,4-Tetrahydrocarbazole (THC), 2-methyl, 3-methyl, and 3-ethyl THC were selected as electron donors while chloranil was used as an electron acceptor in this study. It is found that these complexes forms 1 : 1 complexes, and their maximum absorbance and formation constants decreases with respect to the function of the polarity of solvent and temperature. The polarity of solvents and the temperature have been influenced on the formation constants, which were described using the thermodynamic properties. Moreover, the electronic and steric effects of electron donors have also been effects.
