Various geosynthetics are widely installed as a liner or a protective layer of waste landfills. The interface shear strength between the layers of geosynthetics in waste landfills is an important parameter to ensure the safety of bottom and cover system design. In this study, estimations of interface shear strength between geomembrane and geotextile or Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCL) are performed by large direct shear tests. Especially, this research is focused on the effect of moisture within the interface shear strength between geosynthetics, because most interfaces are vulnerable to rain, leachate and groundwater beneath the liners.

This study was to investigate the reduction of hydration heat by utilizing industrial by-products such as BFS(Blast Furnace Slag). DM(Dredged Mud) was used by parent soil and Ordinary portland cement was used by cementing material. Additive added to reduce the heat of hydration was BFS. From the results of experiment, hydration heat was decreased in accordance with the addition of BFS. The reason was that surface of BFS coated with aluminosulfate. Initial uniaxial strength was low, neither was not long term uniaxial strength. It was concluded that silica rich layer($H_2SiO_4^{4-}$) in solid phase early in the reaction of hydration was difficultly moved in liquid phase due to the increase of ZP(Zeta Potential). However, the ZP in the later hydration was decreased due to the acceleration of mobility of silica rich layer($H_2SiO_4^{4-}$). Therefore, long term physical properties such as uniaxial strength revealed.
A spray-on membrane is a material composed of a polymer, and is a spray-type material that is expected to be able to replace materials such as existing shotcrete or sheet membrane for support or waterproofing purposes. In the previous studies, it is expected that the thickness of the support material such as shotcrete can be reduced if the spray-on membrane is additionally installed on the existing cement-based support materials. In this study, a three-point bending test was performed by a spray-on membrane on the high-performance shotcrete on the outside, and comparison was made between the case where high-performance shotcrete and a spray-on membrane were installed. As a result of comparing the values calculated through the standard test and the real-size bending test, there was no significant difference in terms of flexural strength, but it was found that there was a difference in flexural toughness.

In this paper, we derive the gain of network coding when it is utilized for retransmission in wireless networks. To the end, we derive the outage probability of the network-coded transmission and express the diversity order as a function of the number of nodes and the node's listening probability. From the outage probability, we formulate the ${\epsilon}$-outage capacity. The network-coding gain is the ratio of the ${\epsilon}$-outage capacities between network-coded and non-coded transmissions. Under our system model, we find that the network-coding gain is a function of the diversity order. Moreover, when there are infinitely many nodes, we show that the network coding gain approaches $0.25{\epsilon}^{-1}$.
To improvement the swelling characteristics of the existing cutoff wall against the moisture, the permeability of the sand, calcium bentonite and solidifier mixture according to the contact with trichloroethylene (TCE) was evaluated. Characteristics analysis and the permeability test of the research materials were performed. The permeability was decreased as the mixing ratio of the calcium bentonite was increased and it was increased as the mixing ratio of the solidifier was increased. In conclusion, when mixing 15% of calcium bentonite and more than 30% of solidifier, the permeability coefficient in the underground water movement was analyzed as more than α × 10-4 cm/sec showing that it does not block the underground water movement. In addition, as the permeability coefficient of mixtures after TCE reaction was analyzed as less than α ×10-7 cm/sec, it satisfied the condition of blocking layer (less than 1.0 × 10-6 cm/sec). Therefore, the calcium bentonite and solidifier can be utilized as barrier that showing the characteristic of percolation ability conversion in soil and underground water contaminated with TCE.
Currently, a grouting method that minimizes damage to the reservoir embankment by injecting solidification agent at low pressure is commonly used to ensure waterproofing and safety of the embankment, but the use of solidification agents can cause issues, such as a decrease in durability and a lack of clear method for determining the mixing ratio. In this study, when the base ground and solidification agent were stirred and mixed at various weight mixing ratios, the permeability coefficient and strength of the mixture were confirmed through laboratory tests, and the optimal mixing ratio was suggested through analysis of the test results. The specimen for the laboratory test was produced considering the mixing ratio of the solidification agent. The specimen for the permeability coefficient test was tested by producing one each of cohesionless and cohesive soil for a mixing amount of 1.5 kN/m3 of solidification agent, and the permeability test results confirmed that the water barrier performance was secured below the permeability coefficient value required by various design criteria. A total of 24 specimens for the strength test were produced, 3 for each of 5 mixing amounts for cohesive soil and 3 mixing amounts for cohesionless soil. The strength test results showed that the uniaxial compressive strength tends to increase linearly with increasing curing time for both cohesionless soil and cohesive soil when the mixing amount is less than 2.0 kN/m3. Therefore, the optimal mixing ratio applied to the site is determined to be mixing amount of 1.5 kN/m3 and 2.0 kN/m3. Finally, numerical analysis reflecting test results was conducted on design case for improvement projects for aging reservoirs embankment to verify the water barrier performance and safety improvement effects.
In order to clarify an effect of the cutoff grouting, a series of field experiments were performed during construction of the waterway tunnel from the River Gilancheon(Andong) to the Youngcheon dam. The experiments were conducted in three different ways based on the grouting time in the construction sequence, i.e., the pre-grouting, after-grouting and consolidation grouting tests. And those were also planned to compare the efficiency of grouting in relation to the material types of grout, base rock types and other geologic factors such as discontinuities, depth and direction of grouting holes, and number of grouting stages. Among the materials of grout employed in the experiments, such as a common Portland cement, a micro-cement, a micro-cement with sodium silicate, and a urethane, the urethane was the most effective as the cutoff grouting. And for the same grout material, the pre-grouting was more effective to cutoff the water inflow comparing to the after-grouting and the consolidation grouting. For the rock types, the grouting efficiency in the sedimentary rocks as a base rock was less than the other rocks such as granite and volcanic rocks, which is believed due to the smaller separation of joints and the abundance of infilling materials in the joints developed in the sedimentary rocks. There was no direct relationship between the total RMR value of the rock mass and the grouting efficiency, however, the joint separation which is one of the RMR criteria is believed to have positive relation to the grouting efficiency. And the direction of the grouting holes might not so much affect on the grouting efficiency while increasing the number of grouting stage showed the better results.
In this study, the construction method of new underground continuos impervious wall that the bentonite slurry keeps the stability of excavated trench and the mixture of cement and bentonite plays a role as a constituent of impervious wall in the trench. The merit of homogeneity of the method so called as a cement-bentonite slurry wall enables to accurately make an estimation of hydraulic conductivity of the walls compared with that by other general grouting methods and to verify their waterproof efficiency without difficulty at the design stage. The use of cement-bentonite slurry walls for the containment of groundwater flow has also proven a cost-effective impervious wall technology by employing the simple combination of construction equipments and easy and fast construction procedures. The engineering characteristics of cement-bentonite impervious wall obtained by carrying out the laboratory experiments under various conditions. This study reveals the effect of variation of constituent materials and their mixing methods (Water-Cement-Bentonite) on the engineering characteristics of a composition. Also, this study makes some recommendations on the optimum mixing ratio and mixing sequence for the best quality at the site. That is the most important factors to estimate the construction cost and design of the technique. The comparison is lastly made to evaluate the effect of ordinary Portland and blast furnace slag cement as a bonding material on the behavior of impervious walls.
A finite element nonlinear stress-deformation model with multi-interface element is applied to the stability analysis of waste landfill slope. Strength parameters of waste and geosynthetic materials are obtained from the triaxial test of waste and the direct shear test of geosynthetics, respectively. The landfill models used for the numerical models are fit to regulations of the Korean waste management law. The results of the strength tests showed linear behavior for the waste and nonlinear behavior for the eosynthectic materials. The stability analysis with multi-interface element for the geosynthetic materials in the liner system showed large shear stress and slippage at the boundary of the foundation and the slope of the waste fill. This analysis verified the necessity of multi-interface analysis for waste landfills with composite liners.
Recently, the ground injection method using water glasses as one of the main resources and the products of these constructions have basic problems in terms of the method of constructions for the permanent foundation reinforcement and stopping leakage of water because they have some serious problems such as durability, compressive strength, injectant eluviation and so forth even though they are still used to stop leakage of water in the temporary structures. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the strength characteristic and environment friendliness of NDS method by unconfined compressive strenth test, permeability test, length change test, leaching test, and assessment of environmental impact in comparison water glass type material. The test results show that NDS method has significant improvement of strength, permeability, volume change, and leaching. An assessment of environmental impact also demonstrates that the NDS material is environmentally friendly.
