In this research we present a novel method which combines and visualizes the design model and the FDM-based simulation result of solidification. Moreover we employ VR displays and visualize stereoscopic images to provide an effective analysis environment. First we reconstruct the solidification simulation result to a rectangular mesh model using a conventional simulation software. Then each point color of the reconstructed model represents a temperature value of its position. Next we map the two models by finding the nearest point of the reconstructed model for each point of the design model and then assign the point color of the design model as that of the reconstructed model. Before this mapping we apply mesh subdivision because the design model is composed of minimum number of points and that makes the point distribution of the design model not uniform compared with the reconstructed model. In this process the original shape is preserved in the manner that points are added to the mesh edge which length is longer than a predefined threshold value. The implemented system visualizes the solidification simulation data on the design model, which allows the user to understand the object geometry precisely. The immersive and realistic working environment constructed with use of VR display can support the user to discover the defect occurrence faster and more effectively.
We measured the changes in P-wave velocity that occur when injecting $CO_2$ in gaseous, liquid, and supercritical phases into water-saturated anisotropic sandstones. P-wave velocities were measured in two cylindrical samples of Tako Sandstone, drilled along directions normal and parallel to the bedding plane, using a piezo-electric transducer array system. The velocity changes caused by $CO_2$ injection are typically -6% on average, with maximum values about -16% for the case of supercritical $CO_2$ injection. P-wave velocity tomograms obtained by the differential arrival-time method clearly show that $CO_2$ migration behaviour is more complex when $CO_2$ flows normal to the bedding plane than when it flows parallel to bedding. We also found that the differences in P-wave velocity images were associated both with the $CO_2$ phases and with heterogeneity of pore distribution in the rocks. Seismic images showed that the highest velocity reduction occurred for supercritical $CO_2$ injection, compared with gaseous or liquid $CO_$ injection. This result may justify the use of the seismic method for $CO_2$ monitoring in geological sequestration.
It has been well known that the rainfall-triggered rise of groundwater levels is one of the most important factors resulting the instability of the hillside slopes. Thus, the prediction of porewater pressure is an essential step in the evaluation of landslide hazard. This study involves the development and verification of numerical groundwater flow model for the prediction of groundwater flow fluctuations accounting for both of unsatu나toed flow and saturated flow on steep hillside slopes. The first part of this study is to develop a nomerical groundwater flow model. The numerical technique chosen for this study is the finitro element method in combination with the finite difference method. The finite element method is used to transform the space derivatives and the finite difference method is used to discretize the time domain. The second part of this study is to estimate the unknown model parameters used in the proposed numerical model. There were three parameters to be estimated from input -output record $K_e$, $\psi_e$, b. The Maximum -A-Posteriori(MAP) optimization method is utilized for this purpose, . The developed model is applied to a site in Korea where two debris avalanches of large scale and many landslides of small scale were occurred. The results of example analysis show that the numerical groundwater flow model has a capacity of predicting the fluctuation of groundwater levels due to rainfall reasonably well.

There are three essential components of eLoran: dLoran, data map of ASF, and the Loran data channel. Particularly, dLoran improves navigation accuracy, which is the core technology of eLoran systems. The requirement of HEA's absolute accuracy, less than 20 meters, can be satisfied via dLoran measurements and their corrections. In this study, dLoran measurements using the Pohang Loran-C (9930M) station signal were conducted at Yeongil Bay. We established a dLoran reference station at Homigot Management Office for navigation aids within the Bay. We estimated the effectiveness of the dLoran between the reference site (Homigot Management Office) and a test site (Heunghwan beach) by measuring TOAs. We verified that the TOA data measured at these two regions were highly correlated. The temporal differences in the data between the dLoran reference station and test site were about 10~30 ns per day, which is equivalent to a ranging error of 3~9 m. This result shows that eLoran can meet the requirement of 8~20 meters position accuracy for maritime HEA by correcting the ASF at the user's receiver.

A surface panel method treating a boundary-value problem of the Dirichlet type is presented to design a three dimensional body with free surface corresponding to a prescribed pressure distribution. An integral equation is derived from Green's theorem, giving a relation between total potential of known strength and the unknown local flux. Upon discretization, a system of linear simultaneous equations is formed including free surface boundary condition and is solved for an assumed geometry. The pseudo local flux, present due to the incorrect positioning of the assumed geometry, plays a role f the geometry corrector, with which the new geometry is computed for the next iteration. Sample designs for submerged spheroids and Wigley hull and carried out to demonstrate the stable convergence, the effectiveness and the robustness of the method. For the calculation of the wave resistance, normal dipoles and Rankine sources are distributed on the body surface and Rankine sources on the free surface. The free surface boundary condition is linearized with respect to the oncoming flow. Four-points upwind finite difference scheme is used to compute the free surface boundary condition. A hyperboloidal panel is adopted to represent the hull surface, which can compensate the defects of the low-order panel method. The design of a 5500TEU container carrier is performed with respect to reduction of the wave resistance. To reduce the wave resistance, calculated pressure on the hull surface is modified to have the lower fluctuation, and is applied as a Dirichlet type dynamic boundary condition on the hull surface. The designed hull form is verified to have the lower wave resistance than the initial one not only by computation but by experiment.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the methodology for the computation of uplift pressure and discharge of the seepage flow under gravity dam. A 3-dimensional FDM model is developed for this purpose and this model can simulate the saturated Darcian flow in heterogeneous media. For the verification of the numeric model, test simulation has been executed and the mass balance has been checked. The error does not exceed 3%. Using the developed model, The uplift pressure and seepage flow discharge under gravity dam has been calculated. The uplift pressure shows the similar pattern, comparing with the result of flow-net method. As the length of grout curtain increases, the uplift pressure decreases linearly, but the seepage flow discharge shows the non-linear decreasing pattern. The coefficients of the formulas in the dam-design criteria have been analysed, and ${\alpha}=1/3$ corresponds to the value when the length of curtain grout is 70% of the aquifer height. The uplift pressure near the pressure relief drain has the big curvature vertically and horizontally. The developed model in this study can be used for the evaluation of the effects of seepage flow under gravity dam.

To improve water quality particularly for sea bathers along the Fylde coastal zone near Blackpool, North West England, waste water from a sewage outfall is studied using a mathematical model. The explicit second order accurate central scheme and the third order accurate QUICKEST scheme are used to represent the diffusion terms and the advection terms of the advective-diffusion equation, respectively. Hydrodynamic model is run for a coarse and fine grid, of 1km and 200m, respectively, obtaining good agreement with measured data. Water quality model is then used to predict faecal coliform levels in the region for four different scenarios, including discharges from: - (i) Fleetwood outfall, (ii)River Ribble for summer condition, (iii)River Ribble for winter condition, and (iv)combined sewer overflows for the Blackpool and Fleetwood communities. Main findings from the simulations are:- (i) Fleetwood outfall has a negligible impact on the beaches with respect to pathogen levels; (ii) Discharge from River Ribble for both summer and winter conditions is predicted in the range of coliform levels 10 -500 counts/100ml along the beach at Lytham St. Annes; and (iii) The CSO effluent discharges are predicted not to advect out into offshore by stronger tidal currents.

In this paper we perform a linearized buckling analysis using the Kirchhoff plate theory and the von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relation. Design sensitivity analysis(DSA) expressions for plane elasticity and buckling problems are derived with respect to Young's modulus and thickness. Using the design sensitivity, we can formulate the topology optimization method for minimizing the compliance and maximizing eigenvalues. We develop a topology optimization method applicable to plate buckling problems using the prestress for buckling analysis. Since the prestress is needed to assemble the stress matrix for buckling problem using the von Karman nonlinear strain, we introduced out-of-plane motion. The design variables are parameterized into normalized bulk material densities. The objective functions are the minimum compliance and the maximum eigenvalues and the constraint is the allowable volume. Through several numerical examples, the developed DSA method is verified to yield very accurate sensitivity results compared with the finite difference ones and the topology optimization yields physically meaningful results.

A three-dimensional Galerkin-FEM model which can handle the temporal and spatial variation of density is presented. The hydrostatic approximation is used and density effects are included by means of conservation equation of heat and the equation of state. The finite difference grids are used in the horizontal plane and a set of linear-shape functions is used for the vertical expansion. The similarity transform is introduced to solve resultant matrix equations. The proposed model was first applied to the density-driven circulation in an idealized basin in the presence of the heat exchange between the air and the sea. The advection terms in the momentum equation were ignored, while the convection terms were retained in the heat equation. Coefficients of the vertical eddy viscosity and diffusivity were fixed to be constant. Calculation in a non-rotating idealized basin shows that the difference in heat capacity with depth gives rise to the horizontal gradient of temperature. Consequently, there is a steady new in the upper layer in the direction of increasing depth with compensatory counter flow .in the lower layer. With Coriolis force, geostrophic flow was predominant due to the balance between the pressure gradient and the Coriolis force. As a test in region of irregular topography, the model is applied to the Yellow Sea. Although the resultant flow was very complex, the character of the flow Showed to be geostrophic on the whole.
In this study, applicabilities of aerodynamic approaches for the estimation of pan evaporation were evaluated on 56 study stations in South Korea. To accomplish this study purpose, previous researchers' evaporation estimation equations based on aerodynamic approaches were grouped into seven generalized evaporation models. Furthermore, four multiple linear regression (MLR) models were developed and tested. The independent variables of MLR models are meteorological variables such as wind speed, vapor pressure deficit, air temperature, and atmospheric pressure. These meteorological variables are required for the application of aerodynamic approaches. In order to consider the effect of autocorrelation, MLR models were developed after differencing variables. The applicability of MLR models with differenced variables was compared with that of MLR models with undifferenced variables and the comparison results showed no significant difference between the two methods. The study results have indicated that there is strong correlation between estimated pan evaporation (using aerodynamic models and MLR models) and measured pan evaporation. However, pan evaporation are overestimated during August, September, October, November, and December. Most of meteorological variables that are used for MLR models show statistical significance in the estimation of pan evaporation. Vapor pressure deficit was turned out to be the most significant meteorological variable. The second most significant variable was air temperature; wind speed was the third most significant variable, followed by atmospheric pressure.
