The purpose of this study is to develop the calibration method for temperature effects to improve the accuracy of the Weigh-In-Motion(WIM) system for collecting long-term truck weight data. WIM system was installed at a location where the truck traffic volume is high and weight data has been collected from January 2010. In this study, as a calibration measure, the first axle weight of Truck Type 10, the semi tractor-trailer is used based on the fact that the first axle weight is relatively constant, independent of the cargo weight. From this fact, calibration equations are developed from the relationship between the axle weight and the temperature(daily mean, maximum and minimum). Analysis on calibrated weight data shows adequacy of the proposed calibration method. Results of this study can be used to improve the accuracy of the WIM system and to carry out more rational design of pavement and bridge structures.

In this study, truck weight data and load effects of single truck on bridges are analyzed for development of new vehicular load model of the reliability-based bridge design code. Rational load model and statistical properties of loads are important for developing reliability-based design code. In this study, truck weight data collected at four locations are used as well as data from four locations in other studies. Truck weight data are collected from WIM or BWIM system, which are known to give reliable data. Typical truck types, dimensions and axle weight distribution are determined. Probability distributions of upper 20% total truck weight are assumed as Extreme Type I and 100 years maximum truck weights are estimated by linear regression on the probability paper. The load effects of trucks having estimated maximum weights are analyzed for span length from 10 m to 200 m.
For the design and maintenance of highways and road structures, the statistical data are needed for the vehicle, especially heavy truck crossing. So far, static weighing has been used but it needs fixed station, crews, and it takes a lot of time. Also truck mix and headway distances cannot be obtained. Bridge Weigh-In-Motion system uses the bridge as a weighing scale and collects the axle weights, axle distances. vehicle types and etc. without stopping or slowing down the vehicle. In this study, for the first time in the country, BWIM system is applied on steel I-girder bridge and its applicability is examined. Also data collected in this system is analyzed to get truck traffic characteristics including average daily truck traffic, weight distribution, typical truck configuration and overweight truck status. The results are compared with other data from weighing station and highway toll gates.
The purpose of this study is to calculate and propose rational multi-lane loading factors for bridge design considering the probability of simultaneous truck passing in adjacent lanes and real truck weights. The probability of simultaneous truck passing is calculated by analyzing video image taken at various locations in highways and national roads. Weigh-In-Motion system data at two locations are used, which is combined with the probability of multiple presence to calculate the multi-lane loading factors for typical 2 lane and 5 lane bridges. Statistical properties of multi-lane loading factors are also calculated assuming that locations for video images and WIM data represent the overall traffic condition in the country. Results are compared with various design codes in the world and they show that the values are between the current Korea Bridge Design Code and AASHTO LRFD specification or Eurocode and are similar to Canadian Code.

In this paper, new vehicular load model is developed for reliability-based bridge design code. Rational load model and statistical properties of loads are important for developing reliability-based design code. In the previous paper, truck weight data collected at eight locations using WIM or BWIM system are analyzed to calculate the maximum truck weights for specified bridge lifetime. Probability distributions of upper 20% total truck weight are assumed as Extreme Type I (Gumbel Distribution) and 100 years maximum weights are estimated by linear regression. In this study, effects of multiple presence of trucks are analyzed. Probability of multiple presence of trucks are estimated and corresponding multiple truck weights are calculated using the same probability distribution function as in the previous paper. New vehicular live load model are proposed for span length from 10 m to 200 m. New model is compared with current Korean model and various load models of other countries.

Truck weight data are essential for road infrastructure design, maintenance and management. WIM (Weigh-In-Motion) system provides highway planners, researchers and officials with statistical data. Recently high speed WIM data also uses to support a vehicle weight regulation and enforcement activities. This paper aims at developing axle load estimating models with high speed WIM data collected from national highway. We also suggest a method to estimate axle load using simple regression model for WIM system. The model proposed by this paper, resulted in better axle load estimation in all class of vehicle than conventional model. The developed axle load estimating model will used for on-going or re-calibration procedures to ensure an adequate level of WIM system performance. This model can also be used for missing axle load data imputation in the future.

In this study, we evaluate the braking performance of an urban railway vehicle to verify its basic safety condition. The braking performance evaluation methods, deceleration measurement and braked weight percentage, were compared for trains with different numbers of cars, in order to assess the advantages of each method and their compatibility. With a probabilistic braking model, the effect of the adhesion coefficient distribution was analyzed in accordance with the train composition. A train with many cars has a narrower deceleration distribution width than one with few cars. The braked weight percentage method is expected to be useful in the design of train signal systems, because it allows the braking distance to be calculated for various initial brake velocities. The deceleration distribution model and its results are expected to be useful as a basis for precise train signal design.

Bridge Weigh-in-Motion(BWIM) system calculates a travelling vehicle's weight without interruption of traffic flow by analyzing the signals that are acquired from various sensors installed in the bridge. BWIM system or data accumulated from the BWIM system can be utilized to development of updated live load model for highway bridge design, fatigue load model for estimation of remaining life of bridges, etc. Field test with moving trucks including various load cases should be performed to guarantee successful development of precise BWIM system. In this paper, a numerical simulation technique is adopted as an alternative or supplement to the vehicle traveling test that is indispensible but expensive in time and budget. The constructed numerical model is validated by comparison experimentally measured signal with numerically generated signal. Also vehicles with various dynamic characteristics and travelling conditions are considered in numerical simulation to investigate the variation of bridge responses. Considered parameters in the numerical study are vehicle velocity, natural frequency of the vehicle, height of entry bump, and lateral position of the vehicle. By analyzing the results, it is revealed that the lateral position and natural frequency of the vehicle should be considered to increase precision of developing BWIM system. Since generation of vehicle travelling signal by the numerical simulation technique costs much less than field test, a large number of test parameters can effectively be considered to validate the developed BWIM algorithm. Also, when artificial neural network technique is applied, voluminous data set required for training and testing of the neural network can be prepared by numerical generation. Consequently, proposed numerical simulation technique may contribute to improve precision and performance of BWIM systems.
