  • Transplanting date, planting space and nitrogen level were evaluated for disease development of rice sheath blight using two rice cultivars, Jinheung and Yushin. Sheath blight disease was more severe in early transplanting plot (May 16), narrow planting space($27{\times}12cm$) and high nitrogen level (220kg/ha for Jinheung and 300kg/ha for Yushin) conditions than in May 26 transplanting plot, wide planting space ($27{\times}15cm$) and standard nitrogen level (110kg/ha and l50kg/ha). At the same time, cultural conditions favorable for disease development during growth stage resulted in greater damage at maturing stage.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of cutting frequency(3rd and 5th cut) and level of nitrogen fertilization(l50 + liquid manure, 300 and 450kgha) on growth characteristics, dry matter yield and nutritive vaule of reed canarygrass(Pha1aris arundinacea L.), at the forage experimental field, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, SNU, Suweon. Plant height of 3rd cutting(79.2cm) was significantly higher than that of 5th cutting(58.0cm). And dry mattter yield of cutting frequency was observed in 3rd cutting(16,902kgPna) and 5th cutting(l7,833kg/ha) As the nitrogen fertilization was increased, DM yield was significantly increased(p<0.05). When the nitrogen fertilization was applied at the level 150 + liquid manure, 300 and 450kg, dry matter yields were 16,5 12, 17,123 and 18,368kg/ha, respectively. The contents of neutral detergent fiber(NDF), acid detergent fiber(ADF) and in vitro dry matter digestibility(1VDMD) were similar among cutting frequency. However, slightly higher NDF, ADF and IVDMD contents were found in 5th cutting, but there was not affected by nitrigen fertilization. Based on the results of this experiment, it were indicated that to 5th cutting and 450kg nitrogen fertilization could be obtained from the increase of dry matter yield and nutritive value (Key words : Cutting frequency, Nitrogen fertilization, Dry matter yield, Nutritive Value, Reed canarygrass)

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of nitrogen(N) fertilizer levels (0, 120, 240 and 360kg $ha^{-1}Y^{-1}$ Y-') on seasonal grass growth, dry matter (DM) yield and botanical composition in pasture under shade condition. Investigation date was on 7 , 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after harvesting in spring (May), summer (July) and autumn (Sept.), 1988, respectively. Shade degree was controlled artificially ca. 45-50%, and each annual level of N was distributed 5 times equally. Grass growth and DM productivity were most vigorous in spring. Higher DM yield was produced with N 240 kg spring, and Nl2Okg in summer and autumn. Higher significant relationships, in spring, were found between grass height and DM, and N level and DM yield. However, low relationships were observed between those in summer and autumn. In botanical composition, grass coverage was decreased in summer and autumn, and bareland was increased, especially in higher N plots. Based on the results, it is suggested that 200kg $ha^{-1}$ of N in this experiment is more effective for forage production and pasture persistence. Also a littie more amount of N (50-70kg $time^{-1}$) in spring, and low level of N (20-30kg $time^{-1}$) in summer and autumn may be desirable.

  • This experiment was canied out to determine the effects of nitrogen (N) fertilization level (0, 70, 140, 280 and 420 k a a ) on the grass growth, dry matter (DM) production, numtive value, and botanical composition in reed canarygrass (Phalaris ancndinacea L.) pasture. \ulcornerhe cultivar used in this study was Palaton, and the grass was harvested at soiling-hay stage (3 times per year) in 1992 and 1993. As the N level was increased, the plant height, DM produdion, and crude protein (CP) content were significantly increased (P<0.05). When the N was applied at the levels of 0, 70, 140, 280, 420 kg, DM yields were 4,540, 5,316, 6,060, 7,923 and 9,960 kgha, and CP contents were 17.6, 17.4, 17.4, 18.4 and 19.8%, respectively. However, as the N level was increased, DM percentage, total digestible nutrients, and relative feed value were decreased, while the contents of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber, and bareland were continuously increased, particularly in the plot of N 420 kg fdzation. From the above results, it is suggested that reed canarygrass was one of the sensitive pasture grasses to N fertilizer, and the proper amount of N application was 280 kg/ha/yr for desirable production, nutritive value, and botanical composition in r e d conarygrass pasmre.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to find out fundamental data for the cultivation of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. Leaf area index and dry matter accumulation were investigated with 3-levels of nitrogen application,15, 25, 35kg per 10a during the period of initial growth from the 8th leaf emergence to the late blooming stage. The results obtained were as follows: Leaf emergence increased as growth progressed and in the same pattern at all N-levels. After the heading stage, the value was 15 at all N-levels. Leaf area index (LAI) increased as growth progressed and rapidly till the booting stage. At 15kg N-level the values were larger till the ear formation stage, and at 35tg N-level the values were larger than other N-levels after the booting stage. At the late blooming stage LAI reached 8.13 at 35kg N-level. The value of dry matter accumulation was the highest at 35kg N-level at the late blooming stage, and as was the same in the value of crop growth rate (CGR). There was a tendency that before the booting stage the enlargement of leaf area contributed to dry matter accumulation and after the booting stage did the increase of net assimilation rate (NAR) .

  • To find out the relationships between the changes of soil chemical properties due to submergence and paddy rice yield, a laboratory and 9 field experiments on 9 soil series were carried out. From the field experiments, relative yields of no fertilizer yield to maximum yield were widely distrbuted from 54 to 76, although the correlation between no fertilizer yields and maximum yields was significant. Among the chemical ingredients of submerged soil, $NH_4-N$ only showed significant correlation with no fertilizer yields. From the laboratory experiments, pH were much increased in the soils high in no fertilizer yield than the others. There were no significant correlation between $NH_4-N$ contents of submerged soils and organic matters of dry soils. Soils low in available $P_2O_5$, low in organic matter, and high in clay of dry soil were negligible in increments of available $P_2O_5$ due to submergence, and efficiency of phosphorous fertilizer in those soils were remarkable. Soils extremely high in available $SiO_2$ of dry sail decreased in available $SiO_2$ due to submergence.

  • Korea is one of those countries that have very high usage rates of chemical fertilizers per unit area of cropland. To reduce the fertilizer application rate, a variety of agricultural polices has been introduced since the 1990s. In this study, fertilizer usage was surveyed on the farm base throughout the country in 1999, and the data were compared with those of 1992. Organic fertilizer application rates were decreased in most cereal crops with time pass, but maintained similar levels in vegetables grown in plastic-film houses and in upland soils. Chemical fertilizer application rates were decreased in most of the cereal crops and vegetables surveyed; however, this reduction was concentrated in phosphate and potassium usage, but not in nitrogen. In spite of this decrease, the fertilizer application levels to most crops were maintained at levels much higher than recommended. In the nutrient balance, which was calculated from the difference between input (chemical and organic fertilizers) and output (agricultural products), the nitrogen nutrient surplus did not decrease; however, phosphate and potassium decreased by 21% and 13%, respectively, in 1999 compared with 1992. To reduce fertilizer utilization and to conserve environment, further reduction of fertilizer application is essential.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of fertigation level such as 50%, 75% and 100% N of standard amount of chemical fertilizer,m and fertigation interval such as every irrigation, intervals of 1 and 2 weeks of piggery waste water(PWW) on the growth, yield of red pepper plant and the chemical properties of soil used. In early stage, growth of red pepper plant fertigated with PWW and that of red pepper plant applicated standard chemical fertilezer was the same, while it were increased as increasing application amounts of PWW, and later growth and total yield of red pepper plant were much more at 75% N fertigation of PWW. Inorganic content such as nitrogen, phosphate and potassium and chlorophyll content of red pepper leaves were increased as increasing fergigation amount of PWW. 50% fertigation level showed the lowest rate of fruit setting of red peper plant. For soil chemical properties, pH was slightly decreased, but available $P_2O_5$, and exchangeable K content were increased as increasing fertigation amount of PWW. Because there was not statistically significant difference in the growth, the yield of red pepper and chemical properties of soil used according to various fertigation intervals, and no need to artificially supply PWW, therefore fertigation by simple automatic system with tensiometer was thought to be better.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of 5 years continuous application of compost and rice straw with the different rates of nitrogen fertilizer on physico-chemical properties of paddy soils and yield of rice. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The yield of rice was 7 and 4% higher at straw and compost treatment compared to the non-application of organic matter. The rate of yield response for nitrogen fertilizer was lowered as the amount of nitrogen application increased under the condition of organic matter application. 2. Dry mayer weight and total nitrogen content of rice plants were increased in the order of straw > compost > non-application of organic matter. Above two factors were positive correlations with yield but total nitrogen content was negative correlation with ripening rate. 3. $NH_4-N$ in the soil was higher at plot applicated with compost and straw than non-application. It was positive correlation ($r=0.62^*-0.79^{**}$) with total nitrogen content in rice plants from 15 days after transplanting to heading stage. 4. The physical properties of soil, hardness and infilteration rate, after 5 years experiment, were improved in the order of straw > compost > non-application of organic matter. Organic matter content in the soil was decreased 0.1% on the straw treatment after 4 years, 0.1% on the compost after 3 and 4 years, and 0.1% on the non-application every years.

  • Field experiment was conducted on a sandy clay loam paddy field in the Experimental Farm of the Kangwon National University for four years from 1995 to 1998 to evaluate the effect of different nitrogen fertilizers on soil property and rice yield. The size of each experimental plot was 75 m2. Basal application of fertilizer to the paddy field was on late April, and rice (cv. Odae) was sown with drill seeding on early May. Irrigation was done at 3 leaf stages after rice seeding. Electrical conductivity in soils treated with phosphate- and resin coated slow release fertilizers were relatively greater than those of the other fertilizer application. Available $P_2O_5$ concentration in soils after rice harvest increased significantly compared that in soil before field trial. Rice yield in transplanting culture were $6.516kg\;ha^{-1}$. The rice yield in the direct seeded paddy was 81.9 percents of the yield in the transplanted paddy. The rice yield in phosphate coated slow release fertilizer was the highest among various fertilizer trials in directly seeded dry paddy, while rice yield was the lowest in the organic fertilizer plus urea application. Rice yield between organic fertilizer plus urea and organic fertilizer application were not significantly different. The green manuring effect of rye in the direct seeded rice paddy in Chuncheon was low due to low temperature and short growth period.
