The nitrogen fixation activity and environmental factors of Lespedeza bicli!oy Turcz, forming annual root nodules by symbiotic Rhizobium sp. were analyzed in the field conditions during the growing period. Seasunal changes of $N_2-fixation$ activity showed the maximum value of $120\;\mu\textrm{M}\;C_2_H4{\cdot}noduie\;g\;fw^{-1}{\cdot}hr^{-1}$ during the active growing period (June) and varied significantly depending on the growth phase and environmental factors. The maximum activities were attained at the conditions of pH 7, $30^{\circ}C$ of temperature, 18 Kpa of oxygen partial pressure and inhibited by water stress and nitrogen sources. The habitat soil was weak acidic and poor in nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter contents. The leaf area ratios and chlorophyll contents were ranged from 442 to $48;\textrm{cm}^2{\cdot}g\;dw^{-1}$ and from 33 to $38\;\mu\textrm{g}\;chI{\cdot}\textrm{cm}^2$. Nitrogen contents in each organ showed the maximum of 46, 19 and $11\;mg{\cdot}g\;dw^{-1}, respectively for leaf, rool and stem in the early period. The highest phosphorus contents were 4.2, 1.2 and $0.6\;mg{\cdot}g\;dw^{-1}$, respectively for leaf. root and stem in early growing period. The allocation ratios of nitrogen quantity showed 60% for leaves and 73% for roots during the active and late growth period, and 22% [or stems in average. The allocalion ralios o[ phosphorus quantity showed 58% for leaves during the most productive period, 70% for roots in the pre-growth stage and 26% for stems in average.verage.

A pulse-chase labeling of $^{15}N$ on winter rye (Scale cereale) and forage rape (Brassica napus) grown at $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ was carried out to determine the effects of low temperature on the uptake exogenous N and the remobilization of endogenous N. The growth rate of leaves and roots depressed at $5^{\circ}C$. AAer 9 days at $5^{\circ}C$, nitrogen content of leaves decreased to 20% on the average while that of roots increased to 12% compared with the plants grown at $25^{\circ}C$. Total content of $NO_3$- uptake 60m medium was 23.0 and 43.5 mg Nlplant, respectively, for winter rye and forage rape grown at $5^{\circ}C$ during 9 days. These values were corresponded to 59.3 and 26.1% lower uptake than those of $25^{\circ}C$. A large part of 1 5 ~ was distributed into leaves throughout time course in both of two species. The content of $^{15}N$ in leaves of winter rye at day 6 increased to 166 and 296 $\mu^{15}$N/plant compared with the initial value (day 0) in the plants grown at $5^{\circ}C$and $25^{\circ}C$ , corresponding to 90 and 163 $\mu$g N of remobilization h m roots into leaves during the fist 6 days. From 7 to 9 days, 75 and 52 $\mu$gN of outflow 6om leaves were occurred at $5^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. However, little remobilization of endogenous N was estimated in forage rape throughout the entire time course regardless of temperature treatment. Comparing two species studied, winter rye was much sensitively influenced by low temperature on the uptake of exogenous N and the remobilization of endogenous N.
Separation and identification of the polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) from pyrolysis products of cellulose and lignin were performed using a combination of acid-base solvent partitioning and silicic acid column chromatography with fused-silica capillary column gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry. Sixteen PAC were positively identifited by retention indices and mass spectra data. Both materials produced the same kinds of PAC. But lignin produced much more PAC than cellulose. Almost no highly carcinogenic heterocyclic PAC containing nitrogen and sulfur were produced.
Seasonal distribution of N, P and K contents and their cycling were studied in Korean oak (Quercus acutissima) and Korean alder (Alnus sibirica) stands in central part of Korean peninsula. The amounts of three minerals were high in young leaves but gradually decreased with the process of leaf development in both stands. The amounts of minerals in the branches, trunks and roots were decreased in summer, however, they increased again in autumn. Seansonal changes of these minerals were not significant in the two stands. The amounts of phosphorus and potassium in plant and soil were higher in the oak stand than the alder one, but those of nitrogen were reversed. The amounts of minerals absorbed during one year were greater in the oak stand than in the alder one, but those returned into soil through mineralization of litter were less in the former than in the latter. The nutrient requirements of the oak stand were greater than the alders, but the cycling rate, the ratio of the amount of minerals absorbed to returned, was opposite.

With ${15}^N$ labeling under split roots system of winter rye (Secale cereale L.) and forage rape (Brassica napus L.) grown at $5^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, the N flows were respectively quantified to investigate the transport of newly absorbed nitrate-N in whole plant level at low temperature. Comparing with $25^{\circ}C$ culture condition, the total absorbed nitrate-N content at $5^{\circ}C$ decreased to 59.3% and 27.1% in winter rye and forage rape during 9 days. About 2.5% and 7.6 % of nitrate-N were transported into roots, respectively, in winter rye and in forage rape at $25^{\circ}C$. These proportions increased at $5^{\circ}C$ to 3.8% and 10.9%, respectively. Total N contents transferred by xylem in winter rye grown and forage rape grown at $25^{\circ}C$ during were 55.9 and 54.4 mg N/plant, respectively. xylem flows at $5^{\circ}C$ were 60.4% and 28.8% lower than at $25^{\circ}C$ for winter rye and forage rape. These valves represented that averagely 96.8 % and 90.8% of total absorbed nitrate-N were transferred to leaves in winter rye and forage rape during 9 days. Phloem flows were the smallest among other N flows and were much less influenced by temperature treatment for two species examined. About 2.5% and 0.5% of absorbed N were recycled into roots by phloem transport at $25^{\circ}C$, respectively, for winter rye and forage rape. These proportions increased to 5.2% and 0.9% at $5^{\circ}C$.

Discoloration of canned boiled oysters during storage is one of the serious problems which affect the quality of the products as well as the nutritive value. Usually the factors influencing the quality of canned boiled oysters are the process of pretreatments and the storage temperature of the products. In the present work, the changes of the total chlorophylls and carotenoids in the meat and the viscera of oysters were determined in order to make certain the procedure of the discoloration. In addition, the amino-N and the available lysine as factors of the nutritive value were also checked. In case of treatment with additives, direct addition of syrups containing additives just before seaming or soaking boiled oysters into the solution of additives seemed to have mild effects on retardation of discoloration. The migration of carotenoids from the viscera into the meat was faster than that of chlorophyll resulting in yellowing of the Products preceded greening caused by the chlorophylls. Treatment with $0.5\%\; Na_{2}EDTA\;of\;2.5\%$ brine retarded discoloration and available lysine loss of the Products while sodium-polyphosphate accelerated them. It was probably due to that sodium-polyphosphate could affect the softening or breakdown of the muscle of oysters. But most of all, storage temperature of canned boiled oysters seemed to be the major factor influencing the discoloration and nutritive loss of the products.
The crude methylnaphthalene oil (CMNO) contains nitrogen compounds (NCs) such as quinoline (QU), isoquinoline (IQU), and indole (IN). These NCs in the CMNO are treated as impurities contained in the CMNO due to contamination of the atmospheric environment and unpleasant odors. In order to improve the quality of CMNO, this study examined the effect of extraction experimental factors on the reduction of NCs contained in CMNO using CMNO as a raw material and an aqueous formamide solution as a solvent, respectively. The increase in the volume ratio of solvent to feed in initial (S/F)0 in initial increased the distribution coefficient of NCs and the selectivity of NCs in reference to 2-methylnaphthalene (2MNA). Additionally, an increase in operating temperature (T) increased the distribution coefficient of NCs but conversely decreased selectivity. The compositions of QU, IQU, and IN in the raffinate oil recovered through equilibrium extraction under a constant condition (volume fraction of water to solvent in initial (yw,0) = 0.1, (S/F)0 = 9, T = 303 K, liquid-liquid contacting time = 72 h) were reduced by about 58.5 wt%, 61.9 wt%, and 73.4 wt%, respectively, compared to those of CMNO. The formamide extraction method in this study was expected to be an effective reduction method for NCs contained in CMNO.

A modified VIStA (vortex inertial staged air) burner was developed and used in a once-through-type boiler. For safety, the combustion in this burner is of the non-premixed type. An air damper is installed to control the distribution of air to each combustion chamber. The effects of the air-fuel ratio and air distribution on NOx formation were investigated. The newly modified VIStA burner gives NOx reduction effect by maximum 20% in the combustion chamber of a boiler, while it yields more uniform flame than the conventional burner.
Aboveground biomass and nutrient contents of a 31-year-old pitch pine(Pinus rigida) and a 31-year-old Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) plantations were measured in the Chungbu Forest Experiment Station, Kyunggi Province. Aboveground biomass was 170.2ton/ha in the pitch pine and 87.2ton/ha in the Japanese larch plantations. Aboveground biomass difference between both plantations was due to the difference of stand density. Aboveground biomass in both plantations was allocated as follows : stemwood>branch>stembark>needle. The concentrations of all nutrients(N, P, K, Ca, Mg) were generally higher in the Japanese larch needle than in the pitch pine because of high nutrient uptake characteristics of larch compared with pine tree species. The nutrient concentration in different tree tissues in both tree species decreased in the order of needle>branch>stembark>stemwood. Nutrient contents of aboveground biomass were : N, 335.9 ; P, 40.4 ; K, 121.4 ; Ca, 188.6 ; Mg, 93.8kg/ha in the pitch pine plantation, while nutrient contents in the Japanese larch plantation were : N, 226 ; P, 11.5 ; K, 72.9 ; Ca, 75.7 ; Mg, 37.1kg/ha. The nitrogen use efficiency calculated as the biomass produced by one unit of nitrogen was higher in the pitch pine than in the Japanese larch plantations. This result suggests that pine with high nitrogen use efficiency could be adapted in lower site productivity area compared with larch tree species.
In situ experiments of Nutrient Enrichment Bioassays (NEBs) were conducted in the field along with in the laboratory to determine which nutrient limited phytoplankton growth as a indicator of primary productivity. For the NEBs, the water was sampled using a polyethylene-lined container and dispensed into 6 L water tank in the laboratory. The control (C, no nutrient spike) and six treatments of phosphorus (P), 2-fold phosphorus (2P), 4-fold phosphorus (4P), nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3$-N), 2-fold nitrate nitrogen ($2NO_3$-N), and phosphorus and nitrate nitrogen (P+$NO_3$-N) were set up in the lacustrine zone near the dam site, Daechung Reservoir in September, 2009 and analyzed the diel changes of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chlorophyll-$\alpha$ (Chl-$\alpha$) in the cubitainers. The short-term NEBs showed that algal response in the treatments spiked phosphorus (P, 2P, and 4P) were significantly (p < 0.05) greater than the response in the control (C), and nitrogen-spike. Also, the response in 4P-treatment was greater than those in the P- and 2P-treatments. In contrast, there was no significant differences (p > 0.20) between the $NO_3$-N and $2NO_3$-N treatment. The outcomes of the NEBs suggest that phosphorus limited the phytoplankton growth and nitrogen was not limited in this system. Furthermore, in the N + P treatments, the response was minimum, compared to all other treatments and the control, indicating that even if the system is evidently P-limited system, when added the nitrogen, the response showed the inhibition. Also, > 95% of observed long-term TN:TP ratios in the ambient water showed > 17, which is the criteria of P-limitation, supporting the P-limitation in the system. Overall, these results suggest that phytoplankton biomass near the dam is a direct linear function of P-loading near the watershed, if the phosphorus pool is mainly dissolved fraction.
