  • This study assesses the consumption of seaweed by Koreans using a survey questionnaire. 1,218 subjects were surveyed. Those individuals were divided into inland and coastal regions. Statistical analyses were conducted using the SAS package (ver 9.1). The results of this study are summarized as follows: Of the survey respondents 46.5% were male and 53.5% were female. Inland and coastal residents were divided nearly equally (50.4% and 49.6% respectively). Overall slightly more respondents reported a dislike of seaweeds (52.8% vs 47.2%) and the major reason for their dislike was the smell. With respect to gender and age preference, more females liked seaweed than males (p<0.01) and individuals over thirty were more favorable when compared to those in their teens and twenties (p<0.001). Coastal area residents liked seaweed significantly more than that of inland residents (p<0.01). Respondents reported eating seaweed at home (50.8%) and at restaurants (28.2%). The cooking methods used for dishes with seaweed included: soup (44.8%), wrapped in seaweed (21.8%), and seasoned dishes (19.4%). The most popular item among processed seaweed products was beverages. 26.5% of respondents were getting their food and nutrition information through television and radio programming. In conclusion, the results of this study provides baseline and useful information for the development of marketing plans for seaweed products.

  • The sensory characteristics of eight commercial ready-to-drink (RTD) cold brew coffees were compared by descriptive analysis. The cold brew coffee samples were analyzed for hunter color values, brown color, turbidity, pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids, total phenolic content, and chlorogenic acid content. Three appearances, nine aroma, five flavor/taste, and four texture/mouth-feel related sensory attributes were evaluated by a panel of nine judges. The results of three-way analysis of variance of descriptive data showed that all sensory attributes except "fruit" aroma, "dark chocolate" aroma, "bitter" aroma, and "sweet" taste had significant differences among the samples (p<0.05). Based on the principal component analysis (PCA) of the descriptive data, the samples were primarily separated by first and second principal components, which accounted for 81.78% of the total variance among the samples with high intensities of "nutty aroma", "grain aroma", and "grain taste" versus "earth aroma", "sour aroma", "sour taste", "astringent", "smoothness", and "residual". In the correlation analysis of sensory terms and physicochemical parameters, titratable acidity and soluble solids showed significant positive correlations with earth aroma and smoothness characteristics.

  • Negative space in the discipline of art defines the space around and between the subject of an image. The use of negative space is an element of artistic composition, since it is occasionally used to artistic effect as the "real" subject of an image. In painting, it is a technique that negatively touches the background of an object to be expressed, so that it gives a feeling of unique texture and silhouette by touching unnecessary parts while leaving necessary parts. As in art, negative space in a design can also be useful to identify an image of infeasible design ranges with a straightforward view. Similarity between two disciplines leads to the introduction of the negative space concept for design space exploration. A rough design space exploration using statistics and visual analytics may support more efficient decision-making, and can provide meaningful insights into the direction of early-phase system design. For this, the approach guarantees dynamic interactions between visualized information and human cognitive systems. Visual analytics is useful to summarize complex and large-scale data. It is useful for identifying feasible design spaces, as well as for avoiding infeasible spaces or highly risky spaces. This paper investigates the possible use of the negative space concept by using an application example.

  • Many studies have been carried out to retrieve images using colors, shapes, and textures which are characteristic of images. In addition, there is also progress in research related to the disease images of the crop. In this paper, to be a help to identify the disease occurred in crops grown in the agricultural field, we propose a similarity-based crop disease search system using the diseases image of horticulture crops. The proposed system improves the similarity retrieval performance compared to existing ones through the combination descriptor without using a single descriptor and applied the weight based calculation method to provide users with highly readable similarity search results. In this paper, a total of 13 Descriptors were used in combination. We used to retrieval of disease of six crops using a combination Descriptor, and a combination Descriptor with the highest average accuracy for each crop was selected as a combination Descriptor for the crop. The retrieved result were expressed as a percentage using the calculation method based on the ratio of disease names, and calculation method based on the weight. The calculation method based on the ratio of disease name has a problem in that number of images used in the query image and similarity search was output in a first order. To solve this problem, we used a calculation method based on weight. We applied the test image of each disease name to each of the two calculation methods to measure the classification performance of the retrieval results. We compared averages of retrieval performance for two calculation method for each crop. In cases of red pepper and apple, the performance of the calculation method based on the ratio of disease names was about 11.89% on average higher than that of the calculation method based on weight, respectively. In cases of chrysanthemum, strawberry, pear, and grape, the performance of the calculation method based on the weight was about 20.34% on average higher than that of the calculation method based on the ratio of disease names, respectively. In addition, the system proposed in this paper, UI/UX was configured conveniently via the feedback of actual users. Each system screen has a title and a description of the screen at the top, and was configured to display a user to conveniently view the information on the disease. The information of the disease searched based on the calculation method proposed above displays images and disease names of similar diseases. The system's environment is implemented for use with a web browser based on a pc environment and a web browser based on a mobile device environment.

  • Remotely sensed satellite images can be applied to monitor and obtain land surface information on inaccessible areas. We classified paddy field area in North Korea based on on-screen digitization with visual interpretation using 291 RapidEye satellite images covering the whole country. Criteria for paddy field classification based on RapidEye imagery acquired at different time of rice growth period was defined. Darker colored fields with regular shape in the images with false color composite from early May to late June were detected as rice fields. From early July to late September, it was hard to discriminate rice canopy from other type of vegetation including upland crops, grass, and forest in the image. Regular form of readjusted rice field in the plains and uniform texture when compared with surrounding vegetation. Paddy fields classified from RapidEye imagery were mapped and the areas were calculated by administrative district, province or city. Sixty six percent of paddy fields ($3,521km^2$) were distributed in the west coastal regions including Pyeongannam-do, Pyeonganbuk-do, and Hwanghaenam-do. The paddy field areas classified from RapidEye images showed less than 1% of difference from the paddy field areas of North Korea reported by FAO/WFP (Food and Agriculture Organization/World Food Programme).

  • This study examined photogrammetric reconstruction techniques that can measure the original form of a cultural property utilizing photographs taken in the past. During the research process, photographs taken in the past as well as photograph on the internet of Soswaewon Garden in Damyang(scenic site 40) were collected and utilized. The landscaping structures of Maedae, Aiyangdan, Ogokmun Wall, and Yakjak and natural scenery Gwangseok, of which photographs can be taken from any 360 degree direction from a close distance or a far distance without any barriers in the way, were selected and tested for the possibility of reproducing three-dimensional shapes. The photography method of 151 landscape photographs (58.6%) from internet portal sites for the aforementioned five landscape subjects containing information on the date the photograph was taken, focal length, and exposure were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that the majority of the photographs tend to focus on important parts of each subject. In addition, we discovered that there are two or three photography methods that internet users preferred in regards to each landscape subject. For the purposes of the experiment, photographs in which a single scene consistently appears for each landscape subject and it was determined that there was a high level of preference related to the photography method were analyzed, and three-dimensional mesh shape model was produced with a photoscan program to analyze the reproducibility of three-dimensional shapes. Based on the results of the reproduction, it was relatively possible to reproduce three-dimensional shapes for artifacts such as Ogukmun wall, Maedae, and Aeyangdan, but it was impossible to reproduce three-dimensional images for natural scenery or an object that has similar texture such as Yakjak and Gwangseok. As a result of experimentation related to the reconstruction of three-dimensional shapes with the photographs taken on site using a photography method similar to that of the photographs selected as previously mentioned, there was success related to reproducing the three-dimensional shapes of Yakjak and Gwangseok, of which it was not possible to do so through the photographs that had been collected previously. In addition, through comparison of past and present images, it was possible to measure the exact sizes as well as discover any changes that have taken place. If past photographs taken by tourists or landscape architects of cultural properties can be obtained, the three-dimensional shapes from a particular period of time can be reproduced. If this technology becomes widespread, it will increase the level of accuracy and reliability in regards to measuring the past shapes of cultural landscape properties and examining any changes to the properties.
