  • Experiments with premixed flames in a tube have been conducted to investigate the transition phenomenon from a laminar flat flame to turbulent motions. To induce this phenomenon, a flat flame is formed in a tube. Then, the local velocity at the center of the flat flame surface is increased using $CO_2$ laser irradiation. The deformed flame front propagates with an increase in the total flame surface and oscillating instability. Eventually, the flame front accelerates explosively, and it shows turbulent flame motions with a strong noise. The dynamic behaviors of the flame front prior to the turbulent motions are analyzed in this study to elucidate this process. The physical model of the process is presented according to observations.

  • An experimental study was performed for the combustion-field visualization of the burner which burns the liquid hydrocarbon fuel atomized by an ultrasonic oscillator. Configurations of the flame and combustion-field were caught by both high-speed camera and thermo-graphic camera, and those images were analyzed in detail through a post-processing. As a result, the combustion-field grew and reaction-temperature rose due to the strengthening of combustion reaction with the increasing flow-rate of carrier-gas. In addition, a phenomenon of flame flickering was discussed through the comparative analysis of the variational behaviors between the visible flame and IR (Infrared) flame-field.

  • In this study, two low-swirl nozzles with the same SN (Swirl Number) but different mass ratio (m) of the core part and the swirler part were designed to perform an atmospheric pressure combustion test. For each nozzle, a combustion test was conducted according to the adiabatic flame temperature, and the flame structure, emissions, and combustion instability mode were identified. Although the flame structure was significantly different, the CO emission was similar, and the NOx emission was also more related to combustion dynamics than the flame structure. Combustion dynamics and NOx emission were identified while adjusting the convection delay time by changing the position of the fuel injection nozzle. It was confirmed that when the convection delay time is in the region of (3+4n)/4T±1/4T (n=0,1,2,...), the combustion instability is strong, and in the opposite case, the combustion instability is very weak.

  • In the present paper, the swirl flow structure and flame characteristics of turbulent premixed combustion in a model gas turbine combustor are investigated using large eddy simulation(LES). A G-equation flamelet model is employed to simulate the unsteady flame behavior. When inlet swirl number is increased, the distinct flow structures, such as the shapes of corner recirculation and center toroidal recirculation zone, are observed and the flame length is shorted gradually. Also, the phenomena of flashback are identified at strong swirl intensity. In order to get the accurate description of unsteady flame behavior, the predictive ability of the acoustic wave in a combustor is primarily evaluated. It is found that the vortex generated near the edge of step plays an important role in the flame fluctuation. Finally it is examined systematically that the flame and heat release fluctuation are coupled strongly to the vortex shedding generated by swirl flow and acoustic wave propagation from the analysis of flame-vortex interaction.

  • Influence of changing combustor pressure on flame stabilization and emission index in the swirl-stabilized flame was investigated. The combustor pressure was controlled by suction fan at combustor exit. Pressure index ($P^{\ast}$=Pabs/Patm), where Pabs and Patm indicated the absolute pressure and atmosphere pressure, respectively, was controlled in the range of 0.7${\sim}$1.3 for each equivalence ratio conditions. The flammable limits of swirl flames were largely influenced by changing combustor pressure and they showed similar tendency with laminar flames. NOx emission index decreased with decreasing pressure index for overall equivalence ratio conditions. R.m.s. of pressure fluctuations is increased with decreasing combustor pressure. This flame fluctuation caused incomplete combustion, hence CO emission index increased. These oscillating flames were measured by simultaneous $CH^{\ast}$ chemiluminescence time-series visualization and pressure fluctuation measurement.

  • A gas deflector cooling system plays an important role in the suppression of shock wave generated during the ignition of a launch vehicle engine. Also, this system decrease a large vibration of damaging the payload and structure of the launch vehicle. The gas deflector cooling system in the launch pad of NARO space center was constructed to directly inject water into the plume of the launch vehicle engine. The flight test result of NARO space launch vehicle showed that this method had a good performance on the viewpoint of cooling the gas deflector.

  • Systematic experiments in $CH_4/Air$ counterflow diffusion flames diluted with He have been undertaken to study the oscillatory instability in which lateral flame size was less than burner nozzle diameter and thus lateral heat loss could be remarkable at low global strain rate. The oscillatory instability arises for Lewis numbers greater than unity and occurs near extinction condition. The oscillation is the direct outcome from the advancing and retreating edge flame. The dynamic behaviors of extinction in this configuration can be classified into three modes; growing, harmonic and decaying oscillation mode near extinction. As the global strain rate decreases, the amplitude of the oscillation becomes larger. This is caused by the increase of lateral heat loss which can be confirmed by the reduction of lateral flame size. Oscillatory edge flame instabilities at low global strain rate are shown to be closely associated with not only Lewis number but also heat loss (radiation and lateral heat loss).

  • A cup burner experiment was performed to investigate the effect of the oxidizer velocity and concentration on flame instability near extinction. Heptane was used as a fuel and air diluted by nitrogen and carbon dioxide was used in the oxidizer stream. Two types of flame instabilities at the flame base and at axial downstream were observed near extinction. The instability at the flame base could be characterized by cell, swing, and rotation modes, and the cell mode changed to the rotation mode through the swing mode as the oxidizer velocity increased. To assess the parameters for the flame instability, the initial mixture strengths, Lewis number, and adiabatic flame temperature were investigated under each condition. The Lewis number might be the most important among them, but it is impossible to generalize because of the insufficient number of cases. Furthermore, the axial periodic flickering motion disappeared at low and high oxidizer velocities near extinction. This resulted from the fact that low oxidizer velocity induced evaporated fuel velocity below the critical velocity and high velocity made the reacting fuel velocity comparable.

  • Experimental study in coflow jet flames has been conducted to investigate the effects of adding $N_2$, $CO_2$ and He to coflowing air-side in self-excitations. Differences in the behaviors between buoyancy-driven and diffusive-thermal self-excitations with similar frequency range are explored and discussed in laminar coflow jet flames.

  • Experiments in low strain rate methane-air counterflow diffusion flames diluted with $CO_2$ have been conducted to investigate the flame extinction behavior and edge flame oscillation in which flame length is less than the burner diameter and thus lateral conductive heat loss in addition to radiative loss could be remarkable at low global strain rates. The critical mole fraction at flame extinction is examined in terms of velocity ratio and global strain rate. It is seen that flame length is closely relevant to lateral heat loss, and this sheets flame extinction and edge flame oscillation considerably. Lateral heat loss causes flame oscillation even at fuel Lewis number less than unity. Edge flame oscillations are categorized into three: a growing-, a harmonic- and a decaying-oscillation mode. Onset conditions of the edge flame oscillation and the relevant modes are examined with global strain rate and $CO_2$ mole fraction in fuel stream. A flame stability map based on the flame oscillation modes is also provided at low strain rate flames.
