The direct strength method (DSM) has been adopted by the NAS (2004) and AS/NZS 4600 (2005) for the design of cold-formed steel members. The method can be successfully applied to the design of welded steel members. This paper reviews the development of the DSM for welded steel structural members. The design strength formulae for welded section columns and beams for the DSM are based on the test results performed on welded H-section, C-section, circular and rectangular hollow section columns, plate girders and stiffened plates. The comparison between the design strength of welded sections predicted by the DSM and that estimated by existing specifications is also provided. The comparison verifies that the DSM can properly predict the compressive, flexural and shear strength of welded section columns and beams with the interaction between local and overall buckling.
This paper describes an experimental research on the structural behavior and the ultimate strength of longitudinally stiffened plates subjected to local, distortional, or mixed-mode buckling under compression. The stiffened plate undergoes local, distortional, or interactive local-distortional buckling according to the flexural rigidity of the plate's longitudinal stiffeners and the width-thickness ratios of the sub-panels of the stiffened plate. A significant post-buckling strength in the local and distortional modes affects the ultimate strength of the longitudinally stiffened plate. Compression tests were conducted on stiffened plates that were fabricated from 4mm-thick SM400 steel plates with a nominal yield stress of 235MPa. A simple strength formula for the Direct Strength Method based on the test results was proposed. This paper proves that the Direct Strength Method can properly predict the ultimate strength of stiffened plates when the local buckling and distortional buckling occur simultaneously or nearly simultaneously.
Purpose: This study was undertaken to compare fracture and flexural strength of provisional restorative resins fabricated by additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing, and conventional direct technique. Materials and methods: Five types of provisional restorative resin made with different methods were investigated: Stereolithography apparatus (SLA) 3D printer (S3Z), two digital light processing (DLP) 3D printer (D3Z, D3P), milling method (MIL), conventional method (CON). For fracture strength test, premolar shaped specimens were prepared by each method and stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. Compressive load was measured using a universal testing machine (UTM). For flexural strength test, rectangular bar specimens ($25{\times}2{\times}2mm$) were prepared by each method according to ISO 10477 and flexural strength was measured by UTM. Results: Fracture strengths of the S3Z, D3Z, and D3P groups fabricated by additive manufacturing were not significantly different from those of MIL and CON groups (P>.05/10=.005). On the other hand, the flexural strengths of S3Z, D3P, and MIL groups were significantly higher than that of CON group (P<.05), but the flexural strength of D3Z group was significantly lower than that of CON group (P<.05). Conclusion: Within the limitation of our study, provisional restorative resins made from additive manufacturing showed clinically comparable fracture and flexural strength as those made by subtractive manufacturing and conventional method.
The cold-formed steel stud, which has been used as a load-bearing member of wall panels for steel houses, poses a significant problem in insulation due to heat bridging of the web. Therefore, some additional thermal insulating materials are required. In order to solve this problem, the cold-formed steel thermal stud with slits in the web was developed. However, estimating the structural strength of thermal studs is very difficult because of the arrangement of perforations. In this paper, an analytical and experimental research on thermal studs is described. Three types of studs with different length, pitch and arrangement of slits were tested to failure. A simple design approach was proposed based on the test results. The proposed method adopted the direct strength method, based on the elastic local and distortional buckling stress of plain studs with equivalent thickness in the web instead of thermal studs. The predictions using the proposed method were compared with test results for verification and the adequacy of the proposed method was confirmed.
Direct shear tests have been initiated to understand the characteristics of joints which crucially affect the stability of rock mass. In this research, numerical approach in direct shear tests has been initiated using 3DEC on the basis of 3D distinct element method. Normal loads were altered in four different levels on artificial joint tests depending on the sawtooth angle and strengths on constant normal stress conditions, measuring the peak shear strength according to the direct shear tests under laboratory condition. Also results obtained from mechanical properties through laboratory test were used to perform numerical modeling, and shear strength obtained from the modeling was used to compare with laboratory direct shear test. As a result numerical analysis from distinct element method can simulate well on the shear behavior of rockmass.
This paper describes the moment capacity of flexural members with local buckling based on a series of FE and experiment results. Thin-walled flexural members undergo local, lateral-torsional, or interactive buckling according to the section geometries and lateral boundary conditions. Flexural members with large width-to-thickness ratios in the flanges or the web may undergo local buckling before lateral-torsional buckling. Local buckling has a negative effect on the flexural strength based on the lateral-torsional buckling of flexural members. This phenomenon should be considered in the estimation of the flexural strength of thin-walled sections. Flexural members with various width-to-thickness ratios in their flanges and web were analyzed. Initial imperfections in the local buckling mode, and residual stresses, were included in the FE analyses. Simple bending moment formulae for flexural members were proposed based on the FE and test results to account for local and lateral-torsional buckling. The proposed bending moment formulae for the thin-walled flexural members in the Direct Strength Method use the empirical strength formula and the grosssection modulus. The ultimate flexural strengths predicted by the proposed moment formulae were compared with the AISC (2005), Eurocode3 (2003), and Korean Highway Bridge Design Specifications (2010). The comparison showed that the proposed bending moment formulae can reasonably predict the ultimate moment capacity of thin-walled flexural members.
This paper describes the structural behavior and the ultimate strengths of circular hollow steel (CHS) sections based on a series of compression tests. The ultimate strengths of CHS section columns are mainly dependent on both diameter-thickness ratio and column slenderness ratio. For the CHS sections with a high diameter-thickness ratio, an elastic or an inelastic local buckling may occur prior to the overall buckling, and it may decrease the column strength. Test sections were fabricated from SM400 steel plate of 2.8 mm and 3.2 mm in thickness and were tested to failure. The diameter-thickness ratios of the test sections ranged from 45 to 170 to investigate the effect of local buckling on the column strength. The compression tests indicated that the CHS sections of lower diameter-thickness ratio than the yield limit in the current design specifications showed an inelastic local buckling and a significant post-buckling strength in the local mode. Their ultimate stresses were larger than the nominal yield stress. It was known that the allowable stresses of the sections predicted by the Korean Highway Bridge Design Specifications (2005) were too conservative in comparison with test results. The Direct Strength Method which was newly developed was calibrated for application to the CHS sections by the experimental and numerical results. The Direct Strength Method proposed can predict properly the ultimate strength of CHS section columns whether a local buckling and an overall buckling occur nearly simultaneously or not.
The characteristics of tensile strength of fiber-reinforced grouting (cement paste) injected into rocks or soils were studied. A tensile strength of such materials utilized in civil engineering has been commonly tested by an indirect splitting tensile test (Brazilian test). In this study, a direct tensile testing method was developed with built-in cylinder inside a cylindrical specimen with 15 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height. The testing specimen was prepared with 0%, 0.5%, or 1% (by weight) of a PVA or steel fiber reinforced mortar. A specimen with 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height was also prepared and tested for the splitting tensile test. Each specimen was air cured for 7 days or 28 days before testing. The tensile strength of built-in cylinder test showed 96%-290% higher than that of splitting tensile test. The 3D finite element analyses on these tensile tests showed that the tensile strength from built-in cylinder test had was 3 times higher than that of splitting tensile test. It is similar to experimental result. As an amount of fiber increased from 0% to 1%, its tensile strength increased by 119%-190% or 23%-131% for 7 days or 28 days-cured specimens, respectively. As a curing period increased from 7 days to 28 days, its strength decreased. Most specimens reinforced with PVA fiber showed tensile strength 14%-38% higher than that of steel fiber reinforced specimens.
Although concrete members are not normally designed to resist direct tension, the knowledge of tensile strength is of value in estimating the cracking load. In general, there are three types of test method for tensile strength ; direct tension test, flexural tension test, and splitting tension test. Though direct tensile strength represents the real tensile strength of concrete, direct tension tests are seldom carried out, mainly because it is very difficult to applicate a pure tension force. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the test methods, effect of aspect ratio, and the size effect on the direct tensile strength. Direct tension test, using bonded end plates, follows RILEM and U.S.Bureau of Reclamation. And other test methods follow ASTM provisions. Four kinds of aspect ratio and two kinds of size effect are tested. Same variables are tested by direct tension test and splitting tension test for comparison between the two test methods. Test results show that direct tensile strength of concrete is more affected by aspect ratio and size than other kinds of strength.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the methods of application of the direct analysis method, using the load amplification factor suggested by the KBC 2009 design code, for the evaluation of frame stability. For this purpose, the direct analysis method was performed for three-story-one-bay and five-story-three-bay unbraced steel frames with various notional loads, bending stiffness reductions, and factor B2s. The results of the analyses were compared with the results of the second-order inelastic analysis to evaluate the influence of the applied methods. The scale of the frame, the axial load ratio, and the axial load distribution pattern were added to the main parameters to investigate the external effects. The research results showed that the influence of the methods of application of the direct analysis method is not significant in the case of the required axial strength and the application of the additional notional loads; and that the application of the factor B2 with the story stiffness concept to the direct analysis method is appropriate for the required flexural strength.
