  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of meteorological factors on the diameter growth and Key-year in Pinus koraiensis and Pinus densiflora trees grown in Chuncheon and Hongcheon. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. The diameter growth of Pinus koraiensis was better than that of Pinus densiflora grown in the same meteorological condition and site environment. 2. The influence of meteorological factors on the diameter growth of Pinus koraiensis was the highest in the descending order fog, hours of sunshine, precipitation, relative humidity, warm index, and evaporation. 3. The influence of meteorological factors on the diameter growth of Pinus densiflora was the highest in the descending order fog, hours of sunshine, relative humidity, precipitation, and warm index. But evaporation was not significant. 4. The Key-years for Pinus koraiensis and Pinus densiflora trees appeared in 1964 and 1913 when the diameter growth was influenced by the specific climate change.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the annual variation in diameter growth of Quercus spp. and climatic factors such as monthly temperature, precipitation and solar radiation in central and northern Korea. Annual diameter growth was measured by using stem cores of 262 Quercus trees, and the correlation between the diameter growth and the climatic factors was analyzed. Mean diameter growth of Quercus spp. in Jungwangsan was larger than that in Woraksan, and mean diameter growth by the species was large in order of Q. serrata>Q. variablis>Q. mongolica>Q. dentata. The diameter growth pattern of Quercus spp. in Woraksan was different from that in Jungwangsan. Positive correlations between diameter growth of Quercus trees and temperature or the solar radiation during July were found in Jungwangsan. Significant correlations between diameter growth and solar radiation during March and precipitation during June were found in Woraksan. It is suggested that climatic factors similarly affect the diameter growth of Quercus spp. in a mountainous terrain, but influences of the climatic factors depend on other environmental conditions such as altitude, topography and soil depth.

  • This study was conducted to provide tending operation information for the effective management in unmanaged artificial forests of Pinus densiflora for. erecta, Pinus rigida, and larix leptolepis, based on the study of the comparison of tree growth pattern by residual stand density after thinning practices. Followings are summarized results of this study. 1. The diameter growth of residual trees was increased as residual stand density decreased by thinning practices in the stands of Pinus densiflora for. erecta, and Pinus rigida, and subcompartment (Ga) and (Na) of Larix leptolepis. The statistical analysis noted that the tree growth was significantly different by the residual stand density. 2. The height growth did not show corresponding results by stand density treatment pattern, which indicated that the height growth was not directly influenced by residual stand density, but by site quality of the stand. 3. The diameter increment for the last six years was proportionately increased in larger diameter classes and less dense stands.

  • To develope reforestation methods for enviromentally sound and ecological forest management, Fraxinus rhynchophylla stand structure and radial growth of the trees were invstigated and compared by study sites. Plantation forest studied on Fraxinus rhynchophylla, was located at Jawoon-ni Nae-myeun, Hongcheon-gun and natural forest studied on Fraxinus rhynchophylla, was located at Jangjeon-ni Jinbu-myeun, Pyeungchang-gun. In 7,8 years after planting, differences of annual diameter increment among three stand origins were significant. The highest mean annual diameter increments of F. rhynchophylla, 4.60 mm/year was measured in sprouting trees, and followed by natural seedlings 4.59 mm/year. The lowest values, 4.18mm/year did in planting trees. Early radial growth of planting F. rhynchophylla was measured lower than that of sprouting or natural seedlings. These facts mean that planting F. rhynchophylla is not proper regeneration methods. Other regeneration methods of F. rhynchophylla forest, by sproutings, direct seeding and natural seeding, might be researched and recommended.

  • In this study we investigated the effects of the microclimatic conditions on tree growth in different site types for natural deciduous forests in Korea. First, we classified all the sites into 36 types according to their aspect (east, west, south, and north), elevation (higher than 1,000 m, 700$\sim$1,000 m, and lower than 700 m), and topographical conditions (ridge, slope, and valley). For each site type, we measured diameter growth with increment borer, and then estimated periodic annual increment of diameter, height and volume. We applied a topoclimatological technique for estimating microclimatic conditions, and produced monthly climatic estimates from which 17 weather variables (including indices of warmth, coldness, and aridity) were computed for each site type. The periodic annual increments of diameter, height, and volume were then correlated by regression analysis with those weather variables to examine effects of microclimate on tree growth by site type. We found that the correlation of diameter growth by site type was significantly correlated with most weather variables except daily photoperiod. Water condition was the most important factor for the height growth. For volume growth, on the other hand, the conditions such as relatively high temperature and low humidity provided favorable environment. Our regression analysis shows that aridity index is a good predictor for tree growth including diameter, height and volume increments.

  • This study was conducted to assess the diameter growth patterns of Quercus mongolica and Quercus variabilis dominant species in natural deciduous forests in Korea. The diameter growth data were collected from 83 destructively sample trees for stem analysis in Gangwon-Do region. The relationship between diameter growth and 14 tree measurements was also analyzed. The average diameter growth rate of dominant trees for both species increased until ages of 15-20 years, and exhibited generally constant trend for subsequent ages. The diameter growth rate of both species ranged from 0.09-0.83 cm/yr across the all ages. Average annual diameter growth for last 5 measurement years was 0.28 cm/yr for Quercus mongolica and 0.27cm/yr for Quercus variabilis. The observed growth rate decreased with decreasing crown class. The difference between diameter growth rates for different crown classes was only statistically significant (p<0.0001) for Quercus mongolica. Pearson correlation coefficient between the diameter growth rate decreased with relative diameter (r=0.64), relative height (r=0.61), exposed crown area (r=0.58) and total crown area (r=0.56) for Quercus mongolica. For Quercus variabilis, Pearson correlation coefficient decreased with dbh (r=0.57), crown width (r=0.55), age (r=0.39), competition index (r=-0.39), and height (r=0.35).

  • To estimate optimal tree diameter and height growth function in Pinus thunbergii stands with site index of 12 class, quoted from two linear models of linear transformation(1) and linear transformation (2) and four non-linear models of exponential, Gompertz, Chapman-Richards, and Weibull etc.. Analyzed correlation among the estimated tree diameter and height by these function models, and observed diameter and height growth were compared. In the results of tree diameter and height growth estimation by stand age, non-linear models showed better appropriation than linear model and Chapman-Richards model was most fitted for tree height growth but few, if any, differences among their nonlinear models. Therefore, it is consider to be much more study about non-linear model to estimate tree diameter and height growth in the actual stands hereafter.

  • The objectives of this study were to validate existing growth models of Pinus densiflora and Larix leptolepis grown in Chonbuk regions, and to examine suitability of models to different regions using spatially varied data set. In the valuating model predicted of Pinus densiflora, except to DBH growth model, basal area and height prediction models were biased to fit to different region. And in the valuating predicted height, basal area and DBH model of Larix leptolepis, they were adequate to new data set acquired from different region. Therefore, existing prediction models, except DBH model, of Pinus densiflora have the limitation of practicality that could not be suitable for application to different region. However, owing to high compatibility shown predicted DBH, basal area and height models of Larix leptolepis, they will be adequate to use as the prediction models where data are available around eastern mountain areas of Jeollabukdo.
