  • In 3D virtual environment the description of character' s movement that has utilized the conventional key-frame technique is gradually being developed toward the application of motion control method to generate more realistic and natural motion. Even the motion control method, however, has the limitation for expression of character's motion adapted to the ground properties of virtual world. That is, the walking motions of character are not only, for the most part, so uniform simple and repeated often as to feel to be tedious, but also the unnatural motion in which the tips of the toes soak through a plane or float in the air discording with the conditions of terrain lowers the semblance of reality. This paper proposes an adaptive motion control method for human figure locomotion in virtual environments or games, in which the walking motion is dynamiccally adapted to the ground's sliding properties. We compute an optimal parameters for one cycle of walking motion adapted to the ground properties by combining the coefficient of friction and centripetal force, and therefrom we induce a set of nonskid speed corresponding to various sliding properties of the ground.

  • The methodology of synthetic unit hydrograph using geomorphic characteristics was suggested. Six geomorphic components over 19 watersheds were used to estimate synthetic unit hydrograph and the test watersheds were classified into two groups on the basis of the area of $200km^2$. The regression formulas between standardized geomorphic characteristics for each group and peak quantities of specific streamflow and time of representative unit hydrograph were suggested and the Nash and the Clark unit hydrographs were derived. For verifying the derived unit hydrographs, the resulting hydrographs were compared with the ones using the existing Clark unit hydrographs based on the empirical parameter estimation for the 145 storm events during 2010 to 2011 for the additional six watersheds. The results showed the relatively higher performance over the existing synthetic unit hydrograph methods, which could be a contribution to the hydrologic estimation in ungauged watersheds.

  • In an electrical tomographic survey using an inclined borehole with a pole-dipole array, we must consider several factors: a singular point associated with zero potential difference, a spatial discrepancy between electrode and nodal point in a model due to a inclined borehole, and a variation of geometric factors in connection with a irregular topography. Singular points which are represented by the normal distance from current source to the ground surface can be represented by serveral regions due to a irregular topography of ground surface. The method of element division can be applied to the region in which the borehole is curved, inclined or the distance between the electrodes is shorter than that of nodal points, because the coordinate of each electrode cannot be assigned directly to the nodal point if several electrodes are in an element. Test on a three-dimensional (3-D) synthetic model produces good images of conductive target and shoves stable convergence.

  • These days, surveying instruments are developing rapidly and the precision is improving continuously. The building of three dimensional terrains of high precision are possible and the calculation of the areas or the volumes have high precision due to the development of the technique of the spatial information system using computer. But actually, in construction site they calculate two-dimensional area using the traditional method, plate table surveying, planimeter, and then get three-dimensional area through multiplying two-dimensional area by the slope correction factor. In this study, we show the defect and inefficiency of the calculation of area by the traditional methods and survey the area with Electric Distance Measurement and GPS instrument. With this data, we made the three dimensional terrain model and calculated two-dimensional area, three-dimensional area. After that, we compared areas that calculated by algorithm of triangulated irregular network and analysis of grid method with standard area that calculated by the traditional method. Finally, this paper suggested more effective and precious method in calculating three-dimensional area.

  • Reflection coefficients of the seafloor have been calculated from the amplitude ratio of secondary to primary water bottom reflection in seismic data obtained from Bransfield Strait, Antarctic Peninsula. Test processing for the coefficients shows that moving average is effective to reduce severe fluctuation of the coefficient measured at each point. Relationship between the coefficients and the properties of water bottom is analyzed to illuminate geological environment. In the central Bransfield Basin, the magnitude of reflection coefficients decreases as it is distant from the sedimentary sources. Reflection coefficients range from 0.12 to 0.2 near the continental slope of the basin, and from 0.1 to 0.12 in the basin floor. In the western Bransfield basin, reflection coefficients between 0.2 to 0.3 are obtained from the area eroded by glacial movement. On the volcanic structures near Deception Island, the coefficients show relatively high values more than 0.2. Paleo-geological structures uplifted by tectonic movement and outcropped by glacial erosion have relatively high coefficients.

  • The Gravity-Geologic Method (GGM) was implemented for bathymetric determinations in the Drake Passage, Antarctica, using global marine Free-air Gravity Anomalies (FAGA) data sets by Sandwell and Smith (1997) and local echo sounding measurements. Of the 6548 bathymetric sounding measurements, two thirds of these points were used as control depths, while the remaining values were used as checkpoints. A density contrast of 9.0 gm/㎤ was selected based on the checkpoints predictions with changes in the density contrast assumed between the seawater and ocean bottom topographic mass. Control depths from the echo soundings were used to determine regional gravity components that were removed from FAGA to estimate the gravity effects of the bathymetry. These gravity effects were converted to bathymetry by inversion. In particular, a selective merging technique was developed to effectively combine the echo sounding depths with the GGM bathymetiy to enhance high frequency components along the shipborne sounding tracklines. For the rugged bathymetry of the research area, the GGM bathymetry shows correlation coefficients (CC) of 0.91, 0.92, and 0.85 with local shipborne sounding by KORDI, GEODAS, and a global ETOPO5 model, respectively. The enhanced GGM by selective merging shows imploved CCs of 0.948 and 0.954 with GEODAS and Smith & Sandwell (1997)'s predictions with RMS differences of 449.8 and 441.3 meters. The global marine FAGA data sets and other bathymetric models ensure that the GGM can be used in conjunction with shipborne bathymetry from echo sounding to extend the coverage into the unmapped regions, which should generate better results than simply gridding the sparse data or relying upon lower resolution global data sets such as ETOPO5.

  • 2D hydraulic models of urban areas are at the forefront of current research of flood inundation mechanisms, but they are constrained by inadequate parameters of topography and insufficient data. In this paper a numerical model based on DEMs is presented to represent overflow waters due to bank break in urban areas. The surface flow in the building areas is assumed to be properly modeled by solving Saint-Venant equation. In order to represent flooding broken out in Samcheok city, 2002, hydraulic model test using tracer has been carried out and validated. These efforts will serve for making flood hazard map and for estimating economic loss due to inundation of personal properties in urban areas.

  • Bars in a river bed show the flow of the river, the shape of a river bar can be easily measured in any river. The purpose of this study is to research the morphological characteristics of river bars. The case study area is the lower Golgi River, six bars were examined. All six bars are gravel bars with a grain size in excess of 2 millimeters. Four of the bars are longitudinal bars, in which the direction of the bar follows the river current. After analyzing the gravel in the bars, it was determined that as the gravel flows down the river, gravel grain size decreases while grain roundness increases. The shape of bar varies locally according to flow regime, channel slope, and w/d ratio.
