  • Using daylight in underground spoce may significantly reduce electric lighting load and give a visually comfortable environment. This reper describes a fundaIrentaI study on light duct system to predict inter illuminance ratio on underground periIreter occupied zone level. As a result, integral equation for inter-reflection program are developed and by using optimize light duct system can gives daylight on deep underground space. space.

  • The west underground express way is a recent initiated BTO (Build-Transfer-Operate) project for releasing heavy traffic of the existing west express way which is notorious on-ground road for extremely traffic stuck area in the west of Seoul, South Korea. The new express way for light vehicles is the first double-deck tunnel ever designed in South Korea and 10.91 km long including both open cut structures and concrete lining with middle-deck in bored tunnel. Because the new express way is going through underground of heavily populated area, mechanical & electrical design for the safety of drivers in tunnel is one of the most important parts among many design issues. This paper discusses M & E design focuses including ventilation-evacuation plan and various safety facilities.

  • The changes of geomagnetic flux density distribution on the ground surface by underground empty spaces had been investigated through the variations of the soil density and measuring heights. The geomagnetic flux density distributions were monitored for the surfaces of different density, sink-hole and tunnel by fluxgate-type magnetometer. The underground empty space and low soil density decreased the geomagnetic flux densities, which were decreased from the boundary of raw and low-density (empty) grounds, and showed the lowest value at the center of low-density (empty) ground. The decreases of geomagnetic flux density by underground empty spaces could be found at the surface with the tunnel located at 80 m underground. And, the underground defects of empty spaces, low density zone, fracture zone and sink holes could be monitored by the phenomena of this decreasing flux density.

  • During enlarging an existing tunnel under operation, unexpected excessive overbreaks and large cavities around the tunnel were found. It was an issue that they might influence the stability the new tunnel. The overbreaks and cavities are assumed that they were attributed to excessive blasting under the condition of insufficient ground investigation. To enlarge the existing tunnel safely, therefore, a remedy measure for the overbreaks and cavities is suggested.

  • This paper concerns the deformation behavior of tunnels crossing weak zone during excavation. A three dimensional finite element model was adopted in order to conduct a parametric study on the orientation of weaj zone in terms of strike and dip angle relative to the tunnel longitudinal axis. The results of the analyses were then analyzed so that the tunnel displacements in terms of the ratios between the crown settlement and springline displacement can be related to the orientation of the weak zone. The results indicate that the displacement ratios between the tunnel crown and springline tend to quantitatively change when a weak zone exists near or ahead of the tunnel suggesting that the displacement ratios can be effectively used to predict the weak zone during tunnelling. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.

  • This paper presents the results of reduced scale model tests on the effect of fault zone characteristics on the tunnel deformation behavior. A series of model tests were carried out on deep tunnels considering different fault zone orientations and offset distance. The tunnelling process was simulated in the model tests using compressed air technique. During the tests, the tunnel and ground deformation were mainly monitored while reducing the pressure inside the tunnel and the relationship between the pressure level and the tunnel deformation were established. The results indicate that for a given offset distance the tunnel behavior is influenced the most when the fault zone dips vertically while smallest influence occurs when the fault zone dips 45 degrees.
