  • We have collected a batch of leaf samples at several main crossroads in Daejeon and a background site to obtain distribution of $CO_2$ (greenhouse gas) due to fossil fuel combustion. The leaf samples were treated with AAA method and ${\Delta}^{14}C$ values of them were measured using AMS. ${\Delta}^{14}C$ values of downtown sites were found to be lower by 27-102 ‰ than that of the background site, and the ratio of $CO_2$ originated from fossil fuel combustion in the atmosphere of Daejeon could be calculated from the differences of ${\Delta}^{14}C$ values. The average ${\Delta}^{14}C$ of the background site, around Kyeryong mountain, was measured to be $35{\pm}8$ ‰, and this value is lower than 66.3 ‰, which have been known as the backgdound values in USA.

  • Magnetic anomaly signals from the ferromagnetic targets such as ships in the sea are measured by drone-based magnetic anomaly detection. A quantum magnetometer is suspended from the drone by 4 strings. Flight altitude and speed of drone are 100 m and 5 m/s, respectively. We obtain magnetic anomaly signals of few nT from the ships clearly. We analyze the signal characteristics by the ferromagnetic target through simulation using COMSOL multiphysics.

  • Aggregate is an essential construction material, and the demand is increasing every year. Aggregate has different properties in each region, and it is difficult to supply it over long distances due to its quantity and weight. For the stabilization of aggregate supply and demand, regional aggregate resource surveys have been conducted since 1993 in Korea. In this study, an aggregate resource survey was conducted in Goyang City to understand the characteristics of aggregate distribution as part of the annual regional aggregate resource survey in 2020. Goyang City has a high mountainous area to the east, and the southwestern part shows a topography where a wide flatland develops. It has 18 small streams originated from the eastern mountainuos area and 1 large stream Han River. The drilling data shows that thickness of the Quaternary deposits tend to deepen toward the south. The aggregate reserves are relatively abundant, the depth of the aggregates are relatively deep. Changes in the depth of the Quaternary deposits and the amount of aggregate in Goyang are seems to be closely related to the activities of the Han River rather than the sedimentation characteristics from the upstream to the downstream of the small streams. This characteristics show a similar tendency to the distribution of aggregates in adjacent regions to the west coast in Korea. Therefore, the regions that close to west coast have a high probability of aggregate reserves around relatively large-scale streams flowing into the west coast.

  • In geoscience and engineering the geological characteristics of sediment strata is crucial and possible if reliable borehole logging and seismic data are available. To investigate the characteristics of the shallow strata in the Korea Strait, laboratory sonic logs were obtained from deep borehole data and seismic section. In this study, we integrated and analyzed the sonic log data obtained from the drilling core (down to a depth of 200 m below the seabed) and multichannel seismic section. The correlation value was increased from 15% to 45% through time-depth conversion. An initial model of P-wave impedance was set, and the results were compared by performing model-based, band-limited, and sparse-spike inversions. The derived P-impedance distributions exhibited differences between sediment-dominant and unconsolidated layers. The P-impedance inversion process can be used as a framework for an integrated analysis of additional core logs and seismic data in the future. Furthermore, the derived P-impedance can be used to detect shallow gas-saturated regions or faults in the shallow sediment. As domestic deep drilling is being performed continuously for identifying the characteristics of carbon dioxide storage candidates and evaluating resources, the applicability of the integrated inversion will increase in the future.

  • In step-by-step site selection for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste, parameters necessary for site selection will be acquired through deep drilling surveys from the basic survey stage. Unlike site investigations of rock mass structures such as tunnels and underground oil storage facilities, those related to the geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste are not only conducted in relatively deep depths, but also require a high level of quality control. In this report, based on the 750 m depth drilling experience conducted to acquire the parameters necessary for deep geological disposal, the methodology for deep drilling and the geology, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrogeology and rock mechanics obtained before, during, and after deep drilling are discussed. The procedures for multidisciplinary geoscientific investigations were briefly described. Regarding in-situ stress, one of the key evaluation parameter in the field of rock engineering, foreign and domestic cases related to the geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste were presented, and variations with depth were presented, and matters to be considered or agonized in acquiring evaluation parameters were mentioned.

  • This study examined hydrogeological characteristics of groundwater and surface water interaction in the fresh-saline water mixed zone of East Coast lagoon area, Korea, using several technical approaches including hydrological, lithological, and isotopic methods. In addition, the fresh-saline water interface was evaluated using vertical electrical conductivity (EC) data. For this purpose, three monitoring wells (SJ-P1, SJ-P2, and SJ-P3) were installed across the Songji lagoon at depths of 7.4 to 9.0 m, and water level, EC, and temperature at the wells and in the lagoon (SJ-L1) were monitored using automatic transducers from August 1 to October 21, 2021. Isotopic composition of the groundwater, lagoon water, and sea water were also monitored in the mid-September, 2013. The mixing ratios calculated from oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition decreased with increasing depth in the monitoring wells, indicating saline water intrusion. In the study area, the interaction of groundwater-surface water-sea water was evident, and residual salinity in the sedimentary layers created in the past marine environment showed disorderly characteristics. Moreover, the horizontal flow at the lagoon's edge was more dominant than the vertical flow.

  • In this study, the effect of the solubility of ammonium metavanadate and the decomposition ratio of ammonium ions on a precipitation reaction-the precipitation of ammonium metavanadate by adding ammonium chloride to a sodium vanadate solution-was investigated. As the precipitation temperature and pH increased, the decomposition ratio of ammonium ions increased, and the decomposition ratio was greater than 81% at 45 ℃ and pH 9.3. This was approximately four times higher than that at pH 8. The result of the precipitation reaction, in view of these two factors that significantly influence the precipitation reaction, was that the precipitation yield increased as the temperature increased. However, the effect of temperature was not significant above 35 ℃. A kinetic study of the precipitation reaction revealed that the activation energy of the reaction was 42.3 kJ/mol. Therefore, considering the solubility of ammonium metavanadate, the lower the temperature, the better the vanadium recovery yield. Additionally, considering the decomposition of ammonium ions, the lower the pH of the aqueous solution, the more advantageous. However, at pH 8 or less, sodium polyvanadate is precipitated and the purity of vanadium oxide may reduce.

  • We present gravity anomaly maps based on KIGAM's gravity data measured from 2000 to 2018. Until 2016, we acquired gravity data on about 6,400 points for the purpose of regional mapping covering the whole country with data density of at least one point per $4km{\times}4km$ for reducing the time of the data acquisition. In addition, we have performed local gravity surveys for the purpose of mining development in and around the NMC Moland Mine at Jecheon in 2013 and in the Taebaeksan mineralized zone from 2015 to 2018 with data interval of several hundred meters to 2 km. Meanwhile, we carried out precise gravity explorations with data interval of about 250 m on and around epicenter areas of Gyeongju and Pohang earthquakes of relatively large magnitude which occurred in 2016 and in 2017, respectively. Thus we acquired in total about 9,600 points data as the result. We also used additional data acquired by Pusan National University for some local areas. Finally, gravity data more than 16,000 points except for the repetition and temporal control points were available to calculate free-air, Bouguer, and isostatic gravity anomalies. Therefore, the presented anomaly maps are most advanced in spatial distribution and the number of used data so far in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to pro-actively respond to changes in government R&D policy and start to supplement the limitations of previous KIGAM R&D planning process. We looked out through the existing literature for a variety of R&D planning process, and analyzed the R&D planning process characteristics of each institution through the interview. As a result, we can be derived conclusions and implications from three sides, environmental analysis, demand excavation methods, R&D project configuration and selection method. In the case of environmental analysis and the overall need to enhance the skills and mega trend analysis by market trend analysis. And in the demand side, the institute need to establish challenging and specific R&D goals. In addition, in case of configuration and selection of R&D projects we derived several implications, such as convergence, SME support, resource analysis, selection of long-term project.
