  • A method is presented for evaluating the economic efficiency of a semi-active magneto-rheological (MR) damper system for cable-stayed bridges under earthquake loadings. An optimal MR damper capacity maximizing the cost-effectiveness is estimated for various seismic characteristics of ground motion. The economic efficiency of MR damper system is addressed by introducing the life-cycle cost concept. To evaluate the expected damage cost, the probability of failure is estimated. The cost-effectiveness index is defined as the ratio of the sums of the expected damage costs and each device cost between a bridge structure with the MR damper system and a bridge structure with elastic bearings. In the evaluation of cost-effectiveness, the scale of damage cost is adopted as parametric variables. The results of the evaluation show that the MR damper system can be a cost-effective design alternative. The optical capacity of MR damper is increased as the seismic hazard becomes severe.

  • Presented is a method for nonstationary response analysis of an offshore guyed tower subjected to strong earthquake motions under moderate random waves and current loadings. By taking the time varying envelope function and the auto-correlation function of the ground acceleration in terms of complex exponential functions, an analytical procedure is developed for computing time varying variances of the tower response. The stationary responses due to small random waves are obtained by using frequency domain method, and the results are combined with the nonstationary results due to earthquakes. Finally, the expected maximum responses are estimated. Through the example analyses, the nonstationary method developed in this study is verified, and the contributions of the earthquake, wave and current loadings to the total maximum response are investigated.

  • This paper presents a seismic fragility analysis method for a cable-stayed bridge with energy dissipation devices. Model uncertainties represented by random variables include input ground motions, characteristics of energy dissipation devices and the stiffness of cable-stayed bridge. Using linear regression, we established demand models for the fragility analysis from the relationship between maximum responses and the intensity of input ground motions. For capacity models, we considered the moment and shear force of the main tower, longitudinal displacement of the girder, deviation of the stay cables tension and the local buckling of the main steel tower as the limit states for cable-stayed bridge. As a numerical example, fragility analysis results for the 2nd Jindo bridge are presented. The effect of energy dissipation devices is also briefly discussed.

  • In the dynamic soil-structure interaction(SSI) analysis, numerous uncertain parameters are involved. They include the uncertainties in the definition of input motions, modeling of soil-structure interaction systems. analysis techniques, etc. This paper presents the results of parametric studies of the seismic responses of a reactor containment structure built on the viscoelastic layered soil. Among the numerous parameter, this study concentrates on the effects of definition point of the input motion, embedment of structure to the base soil, thickness of the top soil layer, and rigidity of the base soil. The substructure method using frequency independent impedances is adopted. The method is based on the mode superposition method in time domain using the composite modal damping values of th SSI system computed from the ratio of dissipated energy to the strain energy for each model. From the study results, the sensitivity of each parameter on the earthquake responses has been suggested for the practical application of the substructure method of SSI analysis.

  • Although the Korean peninsula has been considered as a largely aseismic region compared with the surrounding high seismic areas such as North China and Japan, there are more than thirty Quaternary faults reported so far, which are mostly centered in the southeastern peninsula. Structural studies of active faults exposed in Yangnam-myeon of Gyeongju, SE Korea are largely interpreted to post date the late Quaternary, suggesting that the NE-trending reverse faults may result from the active stress regime in the peninsula. The prevailing present-day E-W $S_{Hmax}$ orientations in the peninsula are consistent with the nature of plate forcing stemming from the convergence between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates. It is clear that the Quaternary faults have been reactivated, although resolving more elaborate time intervals responsible for a future rupture remains a significant challenge. This study contributes to better assess many of potential seismic hazards in the study area, in particular, in terms of seismic stability for foundation of nuclear power plant.

  • In this study, the ground motion was synthesized using the finite fault model by the stochastic green function method, and the difference in the ground motions was evaluated by using various values of the source parameters. An earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.5 was assumed for the example fault model. The distribution of the slip in the fault plane was calculated using the statistical data of the asperity area. The source parameters considered in this study were the location of the hypocenter in the fault plane and the ratio of the rupture to the shear wave velocity, the rise time, the corner frequency of the source spectrum, and a high frequency filter. The values of the parameters related to the stochastic element source model were adjusted for different tectonic regions, and the others were selected for several possible cases. The response spectra were constructed from the synthesized ground motion time history and compared with the different parameter values. The frequency range affected by each parameter and the differences of the spectral accelerations were evaluated.

  • In order to evaluate the effect of shear wave velocity of a seismic control point on site response analysis, one-dimensional equivalent linear site response analysis were performed on the model soil profile based on the results of a detailed site investigation of sedimentary layers at Incheon and Busan. The results of the analysis show that an increase of shear wave velocity on the seismic control point (base rock) results in an increase of acceleration in the soil layers. This was mainly due to an unclear definition of the seismic control point. For this reason, the Korean Seismic Design Standard requires a specific definition of the seismic control point, including spatial conditions and soil properties, similar to the MCE (Maximum Considered Earthquake) in FEMA 369.

  • The paleoseismological importance of the Yangsan fault zone was examined by historical earthquake data, aerial photograph, and trench survey of the area. Occurrences of great earthquakes during the historical time indicate that the Yangsan and/or Ulsan fault have been active during the late Quaternary and generated historical events. Geomorphological evidences of the recent fault activity are clearly shown both in the northern segment (Yugye-ri, Tosung-ri and Naengsu-ri areas) and in the southern segment (Eonyang to Tongdosa areas) of the Yangsan fault. The main Yangsan fault is characterized by fault gouges and NNE-SSW lineaments. The reverse faulting in the Yugye-ri area generated about three-mater displacement of the lower terrace deposits. On the other hand, a major strike-slip movement with a minor component of 5-12 m vertical displacement was identified by the offset of the higher terrace surface in the Eonyang area.

  • This paper proposes an efficient method for selecting ground motions with the mean response spectrum matching a target spectrum. Since former studies reported that the shape and amplitude of the response spectra can be treated independently for selecting ground motions, this study first selects ground motions such that the shape of their mean response spectrum matches that of the target spectrum, then scales the ground motions. To select the ground motions best matching the shape of the target response spectrum, the standard deviation of the difference between the target response spectrum and the mean response spectrum of the selected ground motions needs to be minimized. Unlike the existing procedure, the scaling factor can be computed without iteration. Based on the selection results of 7 ground motions from a library of 40 ground motions, the proposed method is verified as an accurate and efficient method.
