  • This paper presents long-term dynamic characteristics of a cable-stayed bridge where installed SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) system. Modal parameters such as natural frequencies and mode shapes are identified by modal analysis using three dimensional finite element model. The developed baseline model has a good correlation with measured natural frequencies identified from field ambient vibrations. By statistical data processing between measured natural frequencies and temperatures, it is demonstrated that the natural frequency is in linearly inverse proportion to the temperature. The estimation of temperature effects against frequency variations is performed. Mode shapes are identified from the TDD (Time Domain Decomposition) technique for ambient vibration measurements. Finally, these results demonstrate that the TDD method can apply to identify modal parameters of a cable-stayed bridge.

  • This paper proposes a shaking table test considering the dynamic soil strcuture interaction (SSI) by using the accelerations measured from superstructure and shaking table. The proposed method based on the substructure method is that only superstructure is used as an experimental model and dynamic soil stiffness is reflected on the controller of shaking table for soil model. At the moment, an experimental superstructure is excited by a shaking table with the motion required to emulate the dynamic behavior of total SSI system. First, the validity of the proposed method is verified by the verification model of numerical simulation, which is derived from the equation of motion of SSI system under consideration. Also, the applicability of the proposed method to shaking table test is numerically verified from the simulation model incorporating the transfer function of shaking table.

  • The floor impact sound insulations are installed frequently for reducing the floor impact sound into the floor slab of the residential buildings in recent years. Therefore the analytical FE model considering the insulation is needed for the sound and vibration analysis of the floor and it is necessary to use a refined finite element model fer considering the large number of modes involved dynamic responses. So it is very difficult to use FE model because of the tiresome task for constructing the FE model, taking a lot of times for analysis and the impossibility of using the proportional damping. The efficient analysis and modeling method are proposed to the dynamic analysis for the floor with damping layer in this study. The floor slabs and finished layers are modeled individually and the spring elements that mean damping layers used to connect two parts. The dynamic analysis by the $Newmark-{\beta}$ method is performed to solve the non-proportional damping problem due to the damping coefficient of insulations.

  • To secure the structural safety of structures and members against earthquakes, the plastic deformation capacity demand of members should be accurately predicted. In the present study, a method for the evaluation of the plastic deformations of members for moment frames was developed. To facilitate the practical use of the proposed method in equivalent seismic design, the plastic deformations of members were evaluated based on the results of elastic analysis, without using nonlinear analysis. The plastic deformation demands of members were formulated as functions of story drift demand, redistributed moment and member stiffness. Story drift demand and moment redistribution were directly determined from elastic analysis. The proposed method was applied to an 8 story-2 bay moment frame, and the predicted plastic deformations were verified using nonlinear analysis. The results showed that the proposed method could be used to accurately predict the member plastic rotations with simple calculations. The proposed method can be applied both to the earthquake design of new structures and to the performance evaluation of existing structures.

  • ASCE 4 requires that a hard stop be built around the seismic isolation system in nuclear power plants. In order to maintain the function of the isolation system, this hard stop is required to have clearance-to-stop, which should be no less than the 90th-percentile displacements for 150% Design Basis Earthquake (DBE) shaking. Huang et al. calculated clearance-to-stop by using a Latin Hypercube Sampling technique, without considering the rocking behavior of the isolated structure. This paper investigates the effects on estimation of clearance-to-stop due to 1) rocking behavior of the isolated structure and 2) sampling technique for considering the uncertainties of isolation system. This paper explains the simplified analysis model to consider the rocking behavior of the isolated structure, and the input earthquakes recorded at Diablo Canyon in the western United States. In order to more accurately approximate the distribution tail of the horizontal displacement in the isolated structure, a modified Latin Hypercube Sampling technique is proposed, and then this technique was applied to consider the uncertainty of the isolation system. Through the use of this technique, it was found that rocking behavior has no significant effect on horizontal displacement (and thus clearance-to-stop) of the isolated structure, and the modified Latin Hypercube Sampling technique more accurately approximates the distribution tail of the horizontal displacement than the existing Latin Hypercube Sampling technique.

  • Shear wall systems behave as individual wall because of openings like window and elevator cage. When coupling beams are installed in shear walls, they will have high strength and stiffness so that be less damaged by lateral loads like earthquake. However, coupling beam is difficult construction method. And arranging reinforcement of slender coupling beams are especially hard. It is because the details of coupling beam provided by ACI 318 are complex. In this paper, experiments were conducted using coupling beams with 3.5 aspect ratio to improve the details of slender coupling beams provided by ACI 318. Two specimens were proposed for this study. One specimen applied with bundled diagonally reinforcement only. Another specimen applied both bundled diagonally reinforcement and High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composite (HPFRCC) so that coupling beams have half of transverse reinforcement. All specimen were compared with a coupling beam designed according to ACI 318 and were evaluated with hysteretic behaviors. Test results showed that the performance of two specimen suggested in this study were similar to that of coupling beam designed according to current criteria. And it was considered that simplification of the details of reinforcement would be available if transverse reinforcement was reduced by using bundled diagonally reinforcement and HPFRCC.

  • Site coefficient and amplification factor of current domestic Seismic Design Code based on American Seismic Code, have no consideration for the domestic ground condition in which the base rock is normally placed within 30m form the surface. By previous studies, the measured spectral acceleration of the result of dynamic centrifugal test and analysis was smaller than the design spectral acceleration for the period over 1.5 sec. Accordingly, in this study structural analysis and design using dynamic centrifugal test result for pile foundation were achieved, and the quantity of concrete and reinforcement of wall frame was compared with each other. Comparison results of cost using KBC the design spectral acceleration of SC, SD site and SDS, the quantity of reinforcement using SDS for SD site was 17~23% smaller than using the design code SD site.

  • The experiment was carried out to investigate lateral retrofitting effects by FRP and BRB (Buckling-Restrained Brace) for beam-column elements. These results were utilized to establish an analytical model using commercial nonlinear analysis software, PERFORM3D. Concrete and steel analytical models previously proposed by several scholars were adopted for this analytical study. A proposed analysis model showed reasonable accuracy compared with the test results on the beam-column elements strengthened FRP sheets and BRB, as well as with the non-strengthened element subjected to lateral cyclic loadings. Subsequently, the proposed modeling technique for nonlinear analysis would be helpful for preliminary analyses for retrofitting structures, by enabling engineers to estimate the improved capacity of retrofitted structural elements before performing construction.

  • Whereas The masonry buildings are safe under gravity loads, most of the masonry buildings in Korea have many structural defects under a lateral load due to an earthquake acceleration. But there is no earthquake resistant design code for the Masonry in Korea. Therefore it may be necessary to be set up an seismic code and be suggested for reinforcing methods for existing masonry buildings. The purpose of this paper is to investigate seismic capacity of reinforced masonry buildings subjected to earthquake load. The typical two models of the masonry building in Korea are selected through a site investigation. On the basis of test results, the fiber reinforcing effect of the two models was considerable. The maximum base shear force and deformation capacity for RM were remarkably increased. It was found that the pier rocking failure was a dominant mode for the RM buildings during a seismic excitation.

  • It is recognized that the dynamic of a structure is affected by the characteristics of the soil layer and foundation. However the design codes for the seismic design of structures are partially reflecting the caharcteristics of the soil layers due to the inherent complexity of them and the lack of systematic study results for the foundation-soil system, and leading to unconservative or too conservative results. In this study, the kinematic interaction effects of foundation-soil system was investigated for the seismic analyses of structures estimating the effects of the shear wave velocity, the depth of the soil layer, the embedment of a foundation and pile foundation, and the modified classification criteria of soil layers are proposed for the reasonable seismic analyses of structures considering the characteristics of soil layers and foundations. For the embedded medium or large foundations (including pile foundations), at least 60m soil layer below the foundation should be considered for the seismic analyses of structures to tate into account the kinematic interaction effects of the foundation-soil system, and also the rocking motion of foundation-soil system with or without piles should be included in the seismic analyses of structures.
