  • The initial wave lengths of tsunamis can be several tens to hundreds kilometers. Thus, the importance of the frequency dispersive effects in proportion to variation of the wave length, and should be properly considered in numerical simulation of tsunami propagation for a better accuracy. Recently, a practical dispersion-correction scheme has been developed by adding dispersion-correction terms(Cho et al., 2007). The new model employing the numerical technique has been verified by comparing numerical results with available analytic solutions, however, the new model has not yet been applied on a real topography. In this study, the new model is applied on a real topography and its applicability is examined. To study the applicability of the new model, two historical tsunami events are simulated for Sokcho, Mukho and Pohang harbors, with the tide gage records. Numerical results, the arrival time and the maximum water level at the tidal stations, are compared with observed data at each harbor.

  • The simulation of tsunami using detailed bathymetry and topography is required to establish the countermeasure of disaster mitigation and the tsunami hazard map. In this study, a simulation of the 1993 tsunami event in the East Sea using parallel finite element model, which is possible to simulate with suitable accuracy by the Beowulf parallel computation method, is performed to produce detailed features of coastal inundation. Results of simulation are compared with measured data. The evolution of statistic distribution of tsunami heights is studied numerically and the distribution functions of tsunami heights show a tendency to the log-normal curve along coastal area.

  • The 2011 Japan Tsunami caused tremendous damage to coastal areas. Because of their drastic propagation speed and large run-up height, nearshore tsunami can cause catastrophic damages on coastal communities within a short time. It is necessary to establish the tsunami hazard mitigation to reduce human injury housing damage. The construction of Tsunami warning system and production of hazard map are needed for minimizing damage by tsunami.

  • The propagation and associated run-up process of tsunami are numerically investigated in this study. A transoceanic propagation model is first used to simulate the distant propagation of tsunamis. An inundation model is then employed to simulate the subsequent run-up process near coastline. A case study is done for the 1960 Chilean tsunami. A detailed maximum inundation map at Hilo Bay is obtained and compared with field observation and other numerical model predictions. A very reasonable agreement is observed.

  • Seabed deformation due to the fault failure have both a spatial variation and temporal history. When the faulting process initiates at a certain point beneath seabed, the failure spreads out to neighboring points, resulting in temporal changes of deformation. In particular, such a process induces tsunami waves from the vertical motion of seabed. The uprising speed of seabed affects the formation of initial surface profile, eventually altering the arrival time and runup of tsunamis at the coast. In this work, we developed a numerical model that can simulate the generation and propagation of tsunami waves by considering the horizontal and vertical changes of seabed in an active and dynamic manner. For the verification of the model, it was applied to the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake in Japan and the results confirmed that the accuracy was improved compared to the existing passive and static model.

  • In this study, a method to construct tsunami inundation map corresponding to the earthquake location and magnitude was proposed for tsunami real-time quantitative response. This proposed procedure can be introduced as in the followings: Potential tsunami source locations expected to cause damage in an interested area was identified. And numerical simulations were performed for various earthquake magnitudes. Based on numerical simulation results, inundation maps were constructed according to each source location and magnitude of tsunami generating earthquake. In this study, inundation maps for Imwon harbor were constructed for the 11 source locations and 7 earthquake magnitudes on a trial basis.

  • The effect of bathymetry near the south sea area of Korea on the propagation of 2011 East Japan Tsunami is analyzed based on the numerical simulation using the finite difference dispersion-correction model. It is found that the bathymetry from the source to Korean Peninsula, such as Nankai Trough, Ryukyu Islands and the topographical lens in the East China Sea, plays an important role to reduce the tsunami height along the south coast of Korea. The mechanism involved in the transformation of tsunamis over those topographies is discussed.

  • Simulation of the trans-oceanic or trans-basin propagation of a tsunami is a computer-intensive task. This study demonstrates an effective and detailed visualization technique to deal with the vast amount of surface-elevation and velocity-field output. This high-definition visualization technique is used to present simulations of the 1960 and 2010 Chilean earthquake tsunamis and the 1983 Central East (Japan) Sea earthquake tsunami. This tsunami-visualization method using high-definition graphic animation is an appropriate tool to show detailed tsunami-propagation behavior over an ocean or coastal sea, as exemplified by the Pacific Ocean and East (Japan) Sea tsunami events.
