  • In this paper, earthquake fragility analysis has been comparatively performed with regard to a buried gas pipeline of API X65 which has been widely used in Korea. For this purpose, a nonlinear time-history analyses has been carried out for 15 different analytical models of a buried gas pipeline in terms of the selected 12 sets of earthquake ground motions with 0.1g of scaling interval. Following that, earthquake fragility analyses have been conducted using the maximum axial strain of the pipeline obtained from the nonlinear time-history analyses. Parameters under consideration for subsequent earthquake fragility analyses are soil conditions, end-restraint conditions, burial depth and the type of pipeline. Comparative analyses reveal that whereas the first three parameters influence the fragility curves, particularly soil conditions amongst the three parameters, the last parameter has a little effect on the curves. In all, the present study can be considered as a benchmark fragility analysis of a buried gas pipeline in the absence of an earthquake fragility analysis of the pipeline and thus is expected to be a useful source regarding earthquake fragility analyses of a buried gas pipelines.

  • Analytical probabilistic vulnerability analysis requires extensive computing effort as a result of the randomness in both input motion and response characteristics. In this study, a new methodology whereby a set of vulnerability curves are derived based on the fundamental response quantities of stiffness, strength and ductility is presented. A response database of coefficients describing lognormal vulnerability relationships is constructed by employing aclosed-form solution for a generalized single-degree-of-freedom system. Once the three fundamental quantities of a wide range of structural systems are defined, the vulnerability curves for various limit states can be derived without recourse to further simulation. Examples of application are given and demonstrate the extreme efficiency of the proposed approach in deriving vulnerability relationships.

  • The seismic fragility curves of a structure represents the probability of exceeding the prescribed structural damage given various levels of ground motion intensityand the seismic fragility curve is essential to evaluation of structural performance and assessment of risk and loss of structures. The purpose of this paper is to develop seismic fragility functions for bridge structures in Koreaby reviewing those of advanced countries. Therefore, at first, we investigated development conditions of the seismic fragility functions. And the next highway bridges in Korea are classified into a number of categories and several typical bridges are selected to estimate seismic fragilities for using this analysis method in Korea. Finally, fragility curves for PSC Box girder bridge are estimated. The results show that the bridge classification and damage state play an important role in estimation of seismic damage and seismic fragility analysis for bridge structures.

  • Recently seismic fragility analysis method has been widely used for the seismic probabilistic risk assessment of infrastructures such as nuclear power plants, buildings and bridges because of its probabilistic characteristics. Furthermore, this technique has been applied to large-scale social systems consisted of each infrastructures by combing GIS. In this paper, the applicability of this technique to domestic infrastructural systems was studied. The transportation network was selected as one of these domestic infrastructural systems. Example studies were peformed about Changwon city. Nonlinear time history analysis, with a maximal likelihood approach were conducted to establish the fragility curves of each infrastrucures (bridges). GIS analysis was also applied to the analysis of whole infrastructural systems. The results show that it is very useful to predict seismic probabilistic risk assessment of this domestic transportation network. However, it also shows that further studies such as more suitable damage criterion to domestic structure and precise nonlinear analysis techniques should be developed to predict more precise results.

  • This study investigates the influence of various soil properties on the seismic performance of a three-span FCM bridge. Piers that are vulnerable to seismic vibration are identified through numerical study of plastic hinges possibly occurring at the top and bottom of the piers. The fragility curve is obtained as a lognormal distribution function with respect to peak ground acceleration(PGA). The median and logarithmic standard deviation, which are two parameters of a lognormal distribution function, are estimated using the maximum likelihood method. In order to consider the different soil properties of each support, an equivalent spring based on the Korean Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges(KSSHB) is adopted in this study. For seismic fragility analysis, the rotational ductility demands of bridge piers are used as a damage index of the structure.

  • Fragility curves show the probability of a system reaching a limit state as a function of some measure of seismic intensity. To obtain fragility curves of six and twelve story staggered wall structures with middle corridor, incremental dynamic analyses were carried out using twenty two pairs of earthquake records, and their failure probabilities for various intensity of seismic load were investigated. The performances of staggered wall structures with added columns along the central corridor and the structures with their first story walls replaced by columns were compared with those of the regular staggered wall structures. Based on the analysis results it was concluded that staggered wall structures with central columns have the largest safety margin for the same level of seismic load.

  • In this study, the seismic response of cut-and-cover box tunnels is evaluated from pseudo-static analyses and the fragility curves are derived. A series of site profiles were used to evaluate the effect of soil conditions. A total of 20 ground motions were used. The fragility curves were developed as functions of peak ground acceleration for three damage states, which are minor, moderate, and extensive states. The damage indices, defined as the ratio of the elastic moment to the yield moment, correlated to three damage states, were used. The curves are shown to greatly depend on the site profile. The curves are further compared to those derived in previous studies. The widely used empirically derived curves are shown not to account for the site effects, and therefore underestimate the response for soft sites.

  • The seismic damage assessment due io the postulated earthquake was attempted for the buildings in the model district of Seoul City. The model district was selected to represent the typical structural and residential characteristics of Seoul City. The buildings in the model district were classified into 11 structural types. For each structural type, the capacity and fragility curves were constructed with parameters presented in HAZUS. The ground motions due to the postulated earthquakes were artificially generated and ground response analyses were done for three kinds of soil profiles classified with respect to the depth of surface soil layer. The probability of damage state of each structural type was calculated using capacity spectrum method and fragility curve. Finally, the calculated results were translated into GIS database and mapped to evaluate the seismic damage in the model district.

  • Purpose: This study was to the fragility evaluation of I-shape curved beam structure subjected to strong ground motions including Gyeongju and Pohang earthquakes Method: In particular, to conduct the analytical model, ABAQUS and ANSYS platform was used in this study. Furthermore, the analytical model using 3D Finite Element Model (FEM) was validated, in comparison to the theoretical solutions at the location of 025L, 05L, and 0.75L in static loading condition. In addition, in order to evaluate the seismic fragility of the curved beam structure, 20 seismic ground motions were selected and Monte-Carlo Simulation was used for the empirical fragility evaluation from 0.2g to 1.5g. Result: It was interesting to find that the probability of the system failure was found at 0.2g, as using 190 MPa limit state and the probability of the failure using 390 MPa limit state was starting from 0.6g. Conclusion: This study showed the comparison of the theoretical solution with analytical solution on I-shaped curved beam structures and it was interesting to note that the system subjected to strong ground motions was sensitive to high frequency earthquake. Further, the seismic fragility corresponding to the curved beam shapes must be evaluated.
