  • The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing family caregivers' reaction of persons with cancer. The study participants were 130 cancer patients and their family caregivers. Data on participant characteristics, caregiver reaction, perceived social support, and cancer related health literacy were collected from July 17 to November 7, 2018 using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed with the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program for descriptive statistics, using independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient and enter multiple regression analysis. The determining factors affecting caregivers' reaction were in case of spouse of patient(${\beta}=.252$, p=.002), subjective health status(${\beta}=-.207$ p=.012), and health literacy (self-care, patient's needs and preference) (${\beta}=-.411$, p<.001; ${\beta}=.247$, p=.037 respectively), and their explanation power was about 37.9%. This finding underscores the need for developing and application of the individualized education program with health literacy improvement strategies for family caregivers of cancer patients.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning and essence of experience of family members as care givers of patient with head and neck cancer. Methods : This study was based on the colaizzi's phenomenological method, which describes the experiences about the family care givers. We had in-depth interview with family of five head and neck cancer patients. Results : Data was classified by 24 themes, 9 theme clusters and 4 categories. The categories are as follows: 'Shocking and actuality like a deadly maze', 'Cut off from the world by changes in family's physical image', 'Exhaustion of family', 'Take-off for mature care'. Conclusion : The results of the study provide useful information in understanding care givers' experience of patient with head and neck cancer and establishing effective strategies to support these care givers.

  • Purpose: Cancer patients require emotional, financial and practical support as well as information/advice regarding their illness. This study aims to explore opportunities and barriers for the provision of the social support services in Australia and Korea. Methods: The survey was carried out by an email questionnaire for social workers in Australia and Korea, and collected data were analyzed using a thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke. Results: In Australia and Korea, various types of social support were available for cancer patients. However, social support for cancer patients should be better understood first in Korea, and more personalized support is needed in Australia. Conclusion: These findings will ultimately help to improve social support services for cancer patients in Korea an Australia, through grasping the current state and making up for the weak points.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors influencing on resilience in adolescents with cancer. Methods: The participants consisted of 107 parents and 107 adolescents who aged ten and eighteen diagnosed with cancer more than six months and currently receiving outpatient treatment or further management after off-therapy. Data was collected using self-report questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression. Results: Resilience was significantly different by religion (t=2.472, p=.045) and number of cancer treatment regimens (F=3.155, p=.047). Family problem-solving communication was also significant by number of cancer treatment regimens (F=3.582, p=.031). The higher social support showed the stronger family hardiness and the better family problem-solving communication. In addition, a positive relationship was found between Family Hardiness Index (FHI) (r=.193, p=.046), Family Problem Solving Communication (FPSC) (r=.226, p=.019) and resilience of adolescents with cancer. FPSC (${\beta}$=.356, p=.045) and religion (${\beta}$=.441, p=.002) were predictive factors at ages 10-12, FHI (${\beta}$=.509, p=.029) and FPSC (${\beta}$=.503, p=.037) were predictive factors at ages 13-15 on resilience of adolescents with cancer that explained 16.0% and 24.3% respectively. Conclusion: The findings suggest that nursing interventions should focus on enhancing family resilience and resilience of adolescents with cancer.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore self-management support experiences among breast cancer survivors. Methods: Individual in-depth interviews were performed for survivors who had treated breast cancer after completion of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Data were collected from April 2014 to July 2014 and analyzed using phenomenological method by Colaizzi. Results: Five essential themes were found as follows: 1) Need for continuous help and support to maintain self-management, 2) Need for professional resources to carry out regular exercise, 3) Overcoming psychological difficulties through others rather than health care professionals, 4) Disappointment with time with and circumstances of health care consultation, 5) Dependence on means of media for health related information. Conclusion: The results might contribute to an understanding of self-management support experienced by breast cancer survivors in Korea. It is suggested that evidence-based program for self-management support should be developed and applied to nursing intervention for breast cancer survivors.

  • Purpose: Quality of life in patients with cancer may be influenced by various kinds of variables, such as personal, environmental, and medical factors. The purpose of this study was to identity the influencing factors on the quality of life in patients with cancer. Materials and Methods: One hundred and forty seven patients, who were taking medical therapy or following up after surgery for cervix cancer, participated in the present study. Quality of life, medical variables (cancer stage, types of treatment, follow-up status, and symptom distress), and psychosocial variables (mood disturbance, orientation to life, and social support) were measured. The obtained data were computed using multiple regression analyses. Results: The medical-and-psychosocial variables explained 63.3% of the total variance in the quality of life ($R^2=0.633$ F:16.959, p=.000). Cancer stage, symptom distress, mood disturbance, social support(family), and optimistic orientation to life were significant factors influencing on the quality of life in patients with cervix cancer. Conclusion: An integrative care program which includes medical - and - psychosocial characteristics of patients is essential to improve quality of life in patients with cervix cancer.

  • This study was undertaken to identify factors influencing care burden among spouses of young women afflicted with breast cancer. Totally, 130 spouses of young women with breast cancer, who were hospitalized or visited one of the three general hospitals in B city, were enrolled for the study. Data was collected between January 3 to March 31, 2016. The mean, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression were analyzed by applying the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Social support had the greatest impact on care burden (β=-0.41, p<0.001), followed by marital intimacy (β=-0.26, p=0.001), age (β=0.18, p=0.009) and perceived economic status (β=-0.14, p=0.039). The explanatory power was determined to be 42% (F=24.41, p<0.001). Our findings indicate the necessity to develop social support programs that help reduce the care burden of spouses of young women afflicted with breast cancer. Moreover, there is a need to develop differentiated programs by considering marital intimacy, age and perceived economic status.
