  • To analyze lateral displacement of excavation walls exposed during the construction of Subway Line 1 in the Daegu region, inclinometer measurement data for sites D4, D5, and Y6 are investigated from the perspective of engineering geology. The study area, in the Banyawol Formation, Hayang Group, Gyeongsang Supergroup, is in the lower part of bedrock of andesitic volcanics, calcareous shale, sandstone, hornfels, and felsite dykes that are unconformably overlain by soil. The rock mass around the D4 site is classified as RMR-V grade and the maximum lateral displacement of 101.39 mm, toward N34W, was measured at a bedding-parallel fault, at a depth of 12 m. The rock mass around the D5 site is classified as RMR-IV grade and the maximum lateral displacement of 55.17 mm, toward the south, was measured at a lithologic contact between shale and felsite, at a depth of 14 m. The rock mass around the Y6 site is classified as RMR-III grade and the maximum lateral displacement of 12.65 mm, toward S52W, was measured at an unconformity between the soil and underlying bedrocks, at a depth of 7 m. The directions of lateral displacement in the excavation walls are vector sums of the directions perpendicular to the excavation wall and horizontally parallel to the excavation wall. Lateral displacement graphs according to depth in the soil profile show curvilinear trajectories, whereas those in bedrock show straight and rapid-displacement trajectories.

  • The Rankine(1857)'s earth pressure and the Hong and Yun(1995a)'s earth pressure was applied to analyze the lateral displacement of diaphragm wall applied to the Top-Down construction method using the computer program, which is a common design program for diaphragm wall. The lateral displacement estimated by the computer program was compared with the lateral displacement measured by inclinometer. The Rankine's earth pressure has been widely used to design the diaphragm wall in the analysis of computer program. As the result of comparison, the lateral displacement of diaphragm wall was predicted differently according to the applied earth pressures. The behavior of lateral displacement predicted by the Rankine's earth pressure was different with displacement measured by inclinometer and the lateral displacement at the bottom part was overestimated. However, the lateral displacement predicted by the Hong and Yun's earth pressure is similar to the behavior and maximum value of real displacement. Therefore, the Hong and Yun's earth pressure is more suitable than the Rankine' earth pressure to design the diaphragm walls applied to the Top-Down Construction Method.

  • Model tests on propped retaining walls were performed for the investigation of wall displacement, distribution of earth pressure, surface settlement and underground movement at various excavation stage in sand. The result of model tests on the trough of surface settlement showed considerable difference depending on the characteristic of wall stiffness, wall friction and soil condition. The location of maximum underground movement were found to be at range of 0.15H to 0. 1H(H: Final excavation depth). Effect of arching by the redistribution of earth pressure were closely related to the stiffness of wall as well as the soil condition. The wall displacement and earth pressure distribution were simulated by elasto - plastic beam analysis program and finite element method with GDHM model respectively. The result of elasto-plastic analysis showed some discrepancy on the wall displacement and earth pressure, but result of underground movement by FEM with various wall stiffness were in good agreement with the model tests.

  • The measurement of in-situ stress is essential to estimate the ground displacement and the stress distribution of a tunnel and an underground structure. In this study, the in-situ stress distribution of the Southern Korean peninsula was re-evaluated by the new 380 in-situ data which were determined by overcoring and hydrofracturing methods, and the three-din erosional numerical analysis of tunnelling was performed. The results of in-situ stress distribution show that the distribution of horizontal stress tends to be more irregular in metamorphosed(gneiss) and granite areas than in sedimentary and volcanic areas. The ratio of horizontal to vertical stresses(K-value) in volcanic area is less than 1 below the depth of 150m. The direction and magnitude of three dimensional in-situ stresses were shown simultaneously in a figure for the first time in Korea. The three-dimensional numerical analysis of tunnelling indicates that the orientation and magnitude of displacement around a tunnel are controlled mainly by the difference between the maximum and minimum horizontal stresses.

  • In this study, it is compared various coefficients of subgrade reaction for application of numerical analysis based on measured data by using various theories and empirical formula. The ratio of the maximum and minimum value is 6.80 at the top of wall but it is 1.06 at the maximum displacement point depends on change of calculated coefficient of subgrade reaction. The data of displacement were generally similar considering an increment of a coefficient of subgrade reaction. And the results of comparison of the displacement at the maximum displacement point by numerical analysis and measured data show similar displacement shape.

  • It is important to measure the displacement behind and ahead of a tunnel face during construction for evaluating mechanical stability by comparing it to a displacement criteria set by tunnel designers. The 30 m long horizontal inclinometer was installed frontward from the tunnel face and the displacement occurred ahead of a tunnel face during excavation was measured by using it. Tunnel arch settlements behind tunnel face were surveyed using a settlement pins on the arch. So total settlement and longitudinal displacement curve were obtained combining settlement measured by both the horizontal inclinometer ahead of tunnel face and the settlement pins behind the tunnel face.

  • The behaviors of a diaphragm wall and a contiguous pile wall such as CIP(Case-in-place pile) and SCW(Soil-cement wall), applied to the top-down construction method, were analyzed using the SUNEX program, which is widely used to design earth retaining walls. Four types of earth pressures, as described by Rankine (1857), Terzaghi and Peck (1967), Tchbotarioff (1973), and Hong and Yun (1995a), were applied to the analysis program to predict the lateral displacement of walls. The results show that the displacements of an earth retaining walls vary with the applied earth pressure. The predicted lateral displacement based on Hong & Yun's (1995a) earth pressure is similar to the measured displacement. Therefore, the actual lateral displacement of an earth retaining wall, as applied to top-down construction method, can be accurately predicted by using an analysis program considering Hong and Yun's (1995a) earth pressure.
