  • This study is focused on how much middle school students who study the chapter of first-grade science,'The Material and Change of the Earth's Crust', connect and understand what they learn with their environment and surroundings. This paper will discuss the connection between school education and living surroundings and how much the difference between the surroundings influences students' concepts and attitudes toward science. This study included 330students in the second year of middle schools from Jeonju, Buan and Jinan in Jeollabuk-do. This study analyzed students' concepts of mineral and rocks by having them observe samples in class. Only 16 percent of the students observe surrounding rocks with interest, but most of them are not interested. Chaesukgang and Mountain Mai are two local places in Jeollabuk-do which have a lot of specific stratum and geological structures, so it's easy for teachers to provide an outdoor experience by showing the students rocks and geological structures. Although which students have a little more observation experience than Jeonju area students, students who throughout the county seldom do outdoor observation learning. By collecting and observing the surrounding minerals and rocks, along with teaching the chapter 'The Materials and Change of the Earth's Crust', and by visiting outdoor locations while teaching about geological structures, we can improve our teaching.

  • This study is to develop teaching materials for geological fieldwork around Bonghwabong area in the national park of the Byeonsan Peninsula, Buangun, Jeonbuk. The developed materials are applied in the geological fieldwork of science high school students to maximize the effects of use. The sedimentary succession of the Bonghwabong area in the Cretaceous age, Mesozoic, represents large-scale and distinctive sedimentary structures on the sea cliffs, which are utilized as teaching materials for earth science fieldwork. The area of Bonghwabong also comprises various geological structures related to advanced learning programs as well as those within the curriculum of high school earth science. A five-step fieldwork model was applied to 15 students in clubs related to earth science in a science high school. This study used a qualitative methodology to analyze students' responses that were gathered about the process of fieldwork. During the activity, a qualitative analysis was carried out by using discussions and interviews both with the students and the teacher. Results indicated that the fieldwork activity using teaching materials was effective in helping the students improve their self-directed learning and practical understanding of earth science.

  • This study is to develop teaching materials for the geological fieldwork of Jeokbyeokgang area located in the national park of the Byeonsan-bando National Park, Buangun, Jeonbuk, Korea. The developed teaching materials are used in middle school science to effectively teach the fieldwork of the area. The sedimentary succession of Jeokbyeokgang area in the Cretaceous age, Mesozoic, represents the large-scale and distinctive sedimentary structures on sea cliffs, which are worth developing as teaching materials for the earth science fieldwork. The area of Jeokbyeokgang also comprises various geological structures related to the advanced learning programs as well as those within the curriculum of earth science in middle school level. A five-step fieldwork model was applied to 20 students in middle school earth science. This study quantitatively analyzed students' responses to the process of the fieldwork activity. Results indicated that the fieldwork activity using the developed teaching materials was effective in helping the students to improve their self-directed learning and practical understanding of earth science.

  • In this study, seven middle school students in the Kumnarae local children's center in Jungnung-dong were selected to conduct visual information design lesson to cultivate local identity. Through the pre and post questionnaires of students and self-evaluation of students' outputs we will verify its effectiveness. First, in the results of the pre and post questionnaire, the learner 's level of local identity which are local affinity, local affection and local self - esteem increased. Second, local affinity shows the greatest increase. This class can be interpreted as the most effective in terms of local affinity, which is the first step in forming regional identity. Third, learners expanded both objective locality and subjective local identity based on data collection and empirical knowledge.

  • The learning by computer games, is in the spotlight as an effective education method for the game generation. The educational games need to provide additionally an omniscient view of the learning as an objective viewpoint for storytelling of learning. The omniscient viewpoint needs good readability in real-time, and to provide systematically overall and detailed informations of learning. In this paper, we propose the visual learning map as the omniscient view for storytelling of learning. The proposed learning map is composed of the district map, the topic map, and the progress map for the omniscient view of the learning. The proposed learning map is represented by several visual diagrams for real-time readability. The proposed learning map can apply to all the educational games which provide the game minimaps.

  • Recently, gesture recognition methods based on dynamic time warping (DTW) have been actively investigated as more mobile devices have equipped the accelerometer. DTW has no additional training step since it uses given samples as the matching templates. However, it is difficult to apply the DTW on mobile environments because of its computational complexity of matching step where the input pattern has to be compared with every templates. In order to address the problem, this paper proposes a gesture recognition method based on DTW that uses localized subset of templates. Here, the k-means clustering algorithm is used to divide each class into subclasses in which the most centered sample in each subclass is employed as the localized template. It increases the recognition speed by reducing the number of matches while it minimizes the errors by preserving the diversities of the training patterns. Experimental results showed that the proposed method was about five times faster than the DTW with all training samples, and more stable than the randomly selected templates.
