  • Radiation use efficiency (RUE), the amount of biomass produced per unit intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), constitutes a main part of crop growth simulation models. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the variation of RUE of rice plants under various nitrogen nutritive conditions. from 1998 to 2000, shoot dry weight (DW), intercepted PAR of rice canopies, and nitrogen nutritive status were measured in various nitrogen fertilization regimes using japonica and Tongil-type varieties. These data were used for estimating the average RUEs before heading and the relationship between RUE and the nitrogen nutritive status. The canopy extinction coefficient (K) increased with the growth of rice until maximum tillering stage and maintained constant at about 0.4 from maximum tillering to heading stage, rapidly increasing again after heading stage. The DW growth revealed significant linear correlation with the cumulative PAR interception of the canopy, enabling the estimation of the average RUE before heading with the slopes of the regression lines. Average RUE tended to increase with the increased level of nitrogen fertilization. RUE increased approaching maximum as the nitrogen nutrition index (NNI) calculated by the ratio of actual shoot N concentration to the critical N concentration for the maximum growth at any growth stage and the specific leaf nitrogen $(SLN;\;g/m^2\;leaf\;area)$ increased. This relationship between RUE (g/MJ of PAR) and N nutritive status was expressed well by the following exponential functions: $$RUE=3.13\{1-exp(-4.33NNNI+1.26)\}$$ $$RUE=3.17\{1-exp(-1.33SLN+0.04)\}$$ The above equations explained, respectively, about 80% and 75% of the average RUE variation due to varying nitrogen nutritive status of rice plants. However, these equations would have some limitations if incorporated as a component model to simulate the rice growth as they are based on relationships averaged over the entire growth period before heading.

  • We constructed a stand yield table for Chamaecyparis obtusa based on data from an actual forest. The previous stand yield table had a number of disadvantages because it was based on actual forest information. In the present study we used data from more than 200 sampling plots in a stand of Chamaecyparis obtusa. The analysis included theestimation, recovery and prediction of the distribution of values for diameter at breast height (DBH), and the result is a valuable process for the preparation ofstand yield tables. The DBH distribution model uses a Weibull function, and the site index (base age: 30 years), the standard for assessing forest productivity, was derived using the Chapman-Richards formula. Several estimation formulas for the preparation of the stand yield table were considered for the fitness index, and the optimal formula was chosen. The analysis shows that the site index is in the range of 10 to 18 in the Chamaecyparis obtusa stand. The estimated stand volume of each sample plot was found to have an accuracy of 62%. According to the residuals analysis, the stands showed even distribution around zero, which indicates that the results are useful in the field. Comparing the table constructed in this study to the existing stand yield table, we found that our table yielded comparatively higher values for growth. This is probably because the existing analysis data used a small amount of research data that did not properly reflect. We hope that the stand yield table of Chamaecyparis obtusa, a representative species of southern regions, will be widely used for forest management. As these forests stabilize and growth progresses, we plan to construct an additional yield table applicable to the production of developed stands.

  • Field studies at Suwon, Cheorwon, and Jinbu were carried out to determine the relationship between mean temperature from transplanting to heading (MT) and growth at heading stage of rice. P lant height (P H) and dry weight (DW) at heading stage were significantly correlated with MT, showing second degree polynomials. The optimal temperatures for PH and DW were 23.2 ℃ and 22.8 ℃, respectively. Little differences in rice growth among soils collected from the experimental sites and the temperature-response in a phytotron study supported that MT was the main determinant of the growth shown in the field study. Though number of days to heading increased as MT decreased, cumulative temperatures (CT) affected by sites and MT for given varieties were fairly constant. When applying specific CT for each of the varieties to the temperature in North Korea, (1) five regions (Kaesong, Haeju, Sariwon, Nampo, Pyongyang) were suitable for early to mid-maturing varieties and (2) 14 regions (Yongyon, Singye, Anju, Kusong, Sinuiju, Changjon, Wonsan, Hamhung, Pyonggang, Yangdok, Huichon, Supung, Sinpo, Kanggye) were suitable only for early-maturing varieties. In (1) regions, the similar extent of growth with that in Suwon could be achieved when mid-maturing varieties grown in Suwon are cultivated. Among (2) regions, early-maturing varieties are expected to demonstrate the similar extent of growth with that in Cheorwon in 9 regions except Hamhung, Kanggye, Pyonggang, Yangdok, and Sinpo. For Hamhung and Kanggye, the target PH was assessed as 4cm higher than that shown in Cheorwon. P lant height of 8-14cm and DW of 2-4g per hill greater than those shown in Cheorwon were the target growth for P yonggang, Yangdok, and Sinpo to attain the similar amount of growth with that in Cheorwon. It is suggested that rice varieties for North Korea could be bred by adjusting the target growth at the breeding sites in South Korea.

  • This study was conducted to get some basic information about rice plant development rate and heading ecology in various climatic conditions, growing nine varieties at three locations, Jinbu as the mountainous cool area, Suweon and Iri as the plain area for two years from 1987 to 1988. Average daily air temperature and day length from transplanting to heading date were analyzed in relation to the heading. Heading date and development rate of each variety were estimated by the Symplex method and the fitness of the model was evaluated. The results obtained as follows: Average daily air temperatures among varieties during the period from transplanting to heading ranged from 18 to $19^{\circ}C$ in Jinbu, from 22.5 to $23.5^{\circ}C$ in Suweon, and from 23.5 to $24.5^{\circ}C$ in Iri, the late-maturing varieties requiring the higher temperatures. The average heading days were about 20 days longer in Jinbu and $3{\sim}5$ days shorter in Iri than those in Suweon in all varieties. Little differences in accumulated temperature from transplanting to heading were observed in regions and years, and also among varieties. Developmental stages could be expressed as the accumulation of daily development rate and the predicted heading dates by the Symplex method were similar to the observed ones. The development rate of each variety varies with air temperatures. The early maturing Japonica types including the Unbong variety were fast in development rate at lower temperatures, but the late-maturing varieties of the Japonica type were late. A model to predict the heading dates of rice varieties by the Symplex method using air temperatures and day lengths was feasible.

  • A population ecological study was carried out to estimate survival and growth rates, biomass, biological production and turnover ratio of cultured sea squirt, Halocynthia roretzi, by growth stages, using data from in situ culture experiment off Hansando in the southern part of Korea from February 1985 to July 1986. The squirt population followed an exponential decay function and the instantaneous coefficient of total mortality (Z) was estimated to be 0.0614 $month^{-1}$(Var (Z) = 0.000126). Growths in total weight and meat weight of squirts were expressed as linear functions during the period of culture experiment. The growth of squirts showed a negative correlation with the water temperature. The mean biomass per string ranged from 2.14 kg for March of the first year to 16.26 kg for March of the next year. The biological production per string was estimated to range from 3.28 kg for the first summer (June - July) to 6.46kg for the first late winter (February-March). The peak of turnover ratio occurred in the late winter (February-March) as 3.013 and the ratios sharply declined thereafter. Based on the results of this study, management implications for culturing sea squirts were also suggested. The optimum harvest time ($t_{mb}$) when the peak biomass in terms of total weight occurred was estimated to be late June of the second year, which corresponded to 16.7 months after the main hanging. However, the time when the peak biomass in terms of meat weight was occurred was early July of the second year. The maximum harvest biomass was 17.4 kg per string in terms of total weight and 6.3 kg per string in terms of meat weight. In conclusion, the process of culture should be conducted on the basis of the knowledge of population ecological theories as shown in this study.

  • In this study, we have developed a lab scale bioreactor to identify the characteristics of nitrification reaction according to operation condition (temperature, inhibitor (as Cl), activated nitrifying bacteria (ANB). etc) to improve nitrification efficiency at low temperature. Recovery rate of nitrification took about 4 days to reach the normal level by injected ANB after inhibition shock of CI injection at $20^{\circ}C$, when measured the concentration of $NO_2{^-}-N+NO_3{^-}-N$ in the effluent. In the case of $10^{\circ}C$, recovery of nitrification rate took about 4 days to reach the level of half to the normal level and 7 days for complete recovery which took 3 days more than those at $20^{\circ}C$. At $10^{\circ}C$ considering the winter season, the specific nitrification rate(SNR) of the from 1 day to 6 days after injected ANB according to its operation condition increased from 0.029 to 0.767 mgN/gSS/hr. The simulated SNR for the 8th day after the injected ANB at $10^{\circ}C$ was 0.840, 3.625 mgN/gSS/hr, respectively as linear function and exponential function, expecting to exceed level of 2.592 mgN/gSS/hr at normal condition. It was confirmed that injection of ANB during low temperature operation has many effects for improving nitrification efficiency through this study. In future studies, if further studies are carried out the determination of ANB injection and the design of efficient ANB reactor considering the changes of operating characteristics by site, it will contribute to the improvement of nitrification efficiency in winter season.

  • A lab-scale MF membrane reactor was installed to investigate the membrane permeability, characteristics of membrane fouling at each conditions, and quality of permeate (liquid livestock manure) in the separation of solid-matters using membrane. Experiment was divided three filtration type such as follows; continuous filtration, gravity filtration, and intermittent filtration. As a result of experiment, flux 1 LMH was maintained for 7days, and trans-membrane pressure(TMP) was increased gradually under 10cmHg, but it was increased immediately after 10cmHg, respectively. However, the flux was increased, the Tmax was decreased exponential more and more. During the pure-flux test, most of the fouling of membrane was reversible. At the gravity filtration, permeate could be obtained as 1.75 LMH for 3.5days without any other electronic pressure. As an investigation of membrane surface, this study could be decided that the reason of fouling at the lower flux (Run 1 and 2) was attached matters in membrane surface, but at the higher flux (Run 4-6) was concentration polarization.

  • The quanttative and structural analysis of the binary standard mixtures of albite and quartz, and microcline and albite were carried out using the Rietveld refinement method in order to investigate the accuracy and precision of the method. The quantitative analysis using the Rietveld method results in a standard deviation of 4 wt % for the albite-quartz standard mixtures and 1 wt % for the microcline-albite standard mixtures, suggesting that its accuracy is far better than that of the conventional XRD method in which only a few selected peaks are utilized. Furthermore, the unit-cell parameters of component minerals in mixtures were also estimated accurately during the analysis. It was observed that the refined weight fractions deviate systematically from their measured values when the method is applied to the mixtures that contain minerals with different degrees of preferred orientation, such as albite-quartz mixtures. The preferred orientation parameters and R-values suggest that the systematic deviation is caused as a result of the preferred orientation effect of feldspar crystallites. It is evident that the preferred orientation corrections are of help for the accurate determination of unit-cell parameters, although they may not improve the result of quantitative analysis significantly. The refined weight fraction of the mineral with higher degree of preferred orientation in mixture is greater than the measured one. This is apparently caused by the effect of geometry of feldspar crystallites in the surface of the mounted sample. The Rietveld refinement method minimizes the problems inherent in the traditional XRD methods, such as the line overlap, primary extinction, and preferred orientation effect, by fitting every data point in a whole pattern explicitly. Furthermore, accurate unit-cell parameters as well as scale factors that can be obtained from the Rietveld refinement are used for the quqantification. The present stdudy demonstrates that the Rietveld method yields far more accurate analytical result than the conventional XRD quantitative analysis method does.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the soil $CO_2$ efflux and micro-climate of a preserved forest area located in a Mt. bulam urban nature park Quercus acutissima stand from June 2013 to May 2014. The research showed that the soil and heterotrophic $CO_2$ efflux were $28.14{\pm}7.99$ to $582.47{\pm}318.51$ and $12.32{\pm}8.04$ to $415.71{\pm}159.92mg\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}h^{-1}$, respectively. In addition the seasonal soil $CO_2$ efflux of summer, autumn, winter, spring were 1169.1, 454.81, 72.08 and $494.23g\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}month^{-1}$, respectively. On the other hand, the seasonal heterotrophic $CO_2$ efflux were 526.20, 340.09, 45.13 and $374.9g\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}month^{-1}$, respectively. Moreover, the annual soil and heterotrophic $CO_2$ efflux was found to be 2190.22 and $1286.33g\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$, respectively. The exponential function was also utilized for the regression analysis in order to correlate the environmental factors with the soil and heterotrophic $CO_2$ efflux. It was found out that both air and soil temperatures were positively correlated with the soil and heterotrophic $CO_2$ efflux. However, the amount of solar radiation and soil moisture has showed low correlation for both types of $CO_2$ efflux. Contribution of root $CO_2$ efflux to total soil $CO_2$ efflux in this Quercus acutissima stand was 33.60%.

  • An ecological study on subtidal macrobenthic fauna was conducted from 25 stations in the estuarine area of Wando-Doam Bay, southern coast of Korea during August 2013. A total of 186 species was collected with a mean density of $1,229ind./m^2$ and a mean biomass of $265.7g/m^2$. Polychaetes showed the richest benthic fauna comprising 43% of total fauna, whereas mollusks appeared as density- and biomass-dominant fauna accounted for 45% and 48% of the mean density and biomass, respectively. The number of species and mean faunal density were relatively higher at the stations surrounded by Sinjido, Joyakdo and Gogeumdo showing a gradual decrease toward inner bay stations. Species number and density were negatively correlated with bottom water temperature, but they were positively correlated with both the bottom salinity and DO. The most dominant species in terms of density was a semelid bivalve, Theora fragilis which showed a positive correlation with TOC content of surface sediment and its high density occurred around Gogeum-Sinji-Joyakdo area where dense aquaculture facilities exist. In the bay mouth area, an amphipod species, Eriopisella sechellensis showed its higher density at the stations with low organic content but fine grains. The combination of water temperature, salinity, pH of bottom water, water and sulfur content of the surface sediment could explain 71% of the spatial distribution of macrobenthic fauna from the Bio-Env analysis. From the cluster analysis, the study area consisted of 6 distinct station groups lineated from offshore area toward inner area. Ampharete arctica, Goniada maculata, Eriopisella sechellensis, Theora fragilis, Caprella sp. were identified as the main contributing faunas in classification by the SIMPER analysis. From the value of BPI, the benthic communities at the inner and central Wando-Doam Bay were assessed to be in a normal condition whereas those at the outer Wando harbor and Gogeum-Sinji-Joyakdo area were assessed in a poor or very poor condition due to the high concentration of particulate organic matter might be originated from the nearby dense aquaculture facilities. This study indicated that pristine inner bay has been influenced by the organic material supplied from the outer bay. Thus it is necessary to establish an ecological management plan to reduce organic enrichment of sediment from dense aquaculture facilities in the outer bay.
