  • We report a direct observation of Barkhausen avalanches in 50-nm Fe film, using a magneto-optical microscope magnetometer, capable of time-resolved domain observation. The time-resolved domain-evolution patterns exhibit that the occurrence of Barkhausen jump is random with respect to interval, size, and location. From the repetitive measurements more than 1000 times, we found that the probability distribution of Barkhausen jump size follows a power-law distribution and the critical exponent reveals the value of 1.14 $\pm$ 0.03.

W., 2010) in high schools in Korea these days, it is written and taught that for a positive real number $a$, $a^{\frac{m}{n}}$ is defined as $a^{\frac{m}{n}}={^n}\sqrt{a^m}$, where $m{\in}\mathbb{Z}$ and $n{\in}\mathbb{N}$ have common prime factors. For that situation, the author shows his opinion that the definition is not well-defined and $a^{\frac{m}{n}}$ must be defined as $a^{\frac{m}{n}}=({^n}\sqrt{a})^m$, whenever $^n\sqrt{a}$ is defined, based on the field axiom of the real number system including rational number system and natural number system. And he shows that the following laws of exponents for reals: $$\{a^{r+s}=a^r{\cdot}a^s\\(a^r)^s=a^{rs}\\(ab)^r=a^rb^r$$ for $a$, $b$>0 and $s{\in}\mathbb{R}$ hold by the completeness axiom of the real number system and the laws of exponents for natural numbers, integers, rational numbers and real numbers are logically equivalent.

  • In general, a nonlinear system is linearized in the form of a multiplication of the 1st and 2nd order system. This paper reports a design method of a weighting matrix and control law of LQ control to move the double poles that have a Jordan block to a pair of complex conjugate poles. This method has the advantages of pole placement and the guarantee of stability, but this method cannot position the poles correctly, and the matrix is chosen using a trial and error method. Therefore, a relation function (𝜌, 𝜃) between the poles and the matrix was derived under the condition that the poles are the roots of the characteristic equation of the Hamiltonian system. In addition, the Pole's Moving-range was obtained under the condition that the state weighting matrix becomes a positive semi-definite matrix. This paper presents examples of how the matrix and control law is calculated.

  • Low-velocity impact on composite sandwich panel has been investigated. Contact force is computed from a proposed modified Hertzian contact law. The Hertzian contact law is constructed by adjusting numerical value of the exponent and reducing the through-the- thickness elastic constant of honeycomb core. The equivalent transverse elastic constant is calculated from the rule of mixture. Nonlinear equation to calculate the contact force is solved by the Newton-Raphson method and time integration is done by the Newmark-beta method. A finite element program for the low-velocity impact analysis is coded by implementing these techniques and an 18-node assumed strain solid element. Behaviors of composite sandwich panels subjected to low-velocity impact are analyzed for various cases with different geometry and lay-ups. It has been found that the present code with the proposed contact law can predict measured contact forces and contact times for most cases within reasonable error bounds.

  • The simplified plate theory is presented for static and free vibration analysis of power-law(P) and sigmoid(S) Functionally Graded Materials(FGM) plates. This theory considers the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear stress, and satisfies the condition that requires the transverse shear stress to be zero on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate, without the shear correction factor. The simplified plate theory uses only four unknown variables and shares strong similarities with classical plate theory(CPT) in many aspects such as stress-resultant expressions, equation of motion and boundary conditions. The material properties of the plate are assumed to vary according to the power-law and sigmoid distributions of the volume fractions of the constituents. The Hamilton's principle is used to derive the equations of motion and Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation model is employed. The results of static and dynamic responses for a simply supported FGM plate are calculated and a comparative analysis is carried out. The results of the comparative analysis with the solutions of references show relevant and accurate results for static and free vibration problems of FGM plates. Analytical solutions for the static and free vibration problems are presented so as to reveal the effects of the power law index, elastic foundation parameter, and side-to-thickness ratio.

  • The rheological studies on dilute and concentrate solutions of naked and covered barley starches were carried out with various viscosimeters. The rheology of dilute solutions (0.05-0.3%) were characterized by intrinsic viscosity and related parameter according to Huggins equation. Also, the rheology of the solutions of higher concentrations (1-5%) were characterized by time dependent characteristics and pseudoplastic behaviors. The values of consistency index according to the power equation were exponen tially dependent upon concentration and temperature. The results showed that the rheological properties could differ greatly due to difference in varieties. The naked barley starch exhibited higher intrinsic viscosity, more thixotropic behavior and more dependence of consistency index on concentration and temperature than the covered barley starch.

  • Rheological properties of waxy and non-waxy rice starch solutions were evaluated with a narrow gap rotational and Cannon Fenske viscometers. The gelatinized rice starch solutions containing 0.2-1.0% starch displayed pseudoplastic flow behavior. At higher starch level, degree of pseudoplasticity of waxy rice starch solutions increased, while that of non-waxy rice did not changed apparently. The consistency coefficient (K) of non-waxy rice starch solutions increased with increasing gelatinization temperature, but waxy rice starch solutions remained constant, and in alkaline aqueous solutions both of them showed increasing K values. The value of K increased exponentially with an increase in concentration. The effect of the temperature on the viscosity of the solutions followed Arrhenius' type equation, and the activation energies were in the range of 3.675-3.775 kcal/g-mol that were near to that of pure water. The changes of reduced viscosity with concentration were followed Huggin's equation and the values of intrinsic viscosity and interaction coefficient were 0.78-1.59 dl/g and 0.67-2.75, respectively.

  • The properties of fracture system on road-cut slopes along the Busan-Ulsan express way under construction are investigated and analyzed. Fracture spacing distributions show log-normal form with extension fractures and negative exponential form with shear fractures. Straight line segments in log-log plots of cumulative fracture length indicate a power-law scaling with exponents of -1.13 in site 1, -1.01 in site 2 and -1.52 in site 3. It is likely that the stability and strength of rock mass are the lowest in site 1 as judged from the analyses of spacing, density and inter-section of fractures in three sites. In contrast, the highest efficiency of the fracture network for conducting fluid flow is seen in site 3 where the largest cluster occupies 73% through the window map. Based on the field survey data, this study modified weighting values of the RMR system using a multiple regression analysis method. The analysis result suggests a modified weighting values of the RMR parameters as follows; 18 for the intact strength of rock; 61 for RQD; 2 for spacing of discontinuities; 2 for the condition of discontinuities; and 17 for ground water.

  • In this study, the effect of the fluid flow characteristics on the length distribution of the fracture elements composing the fracture network is analyzed numerically using the 3D fracture crack network model. The truncated power-law distribution is applied to generate the length distribution of the fracture elements and the simulations of fluid flow are carried out with the exponent ${\beta}_l$ from 1.0 to 6.0. As a result of simulations, when the exponent ${\beta}_l$ increases, the length distribution of the fracture elements gradually decreases, and the connectivity between the fracture elements affecting the permeability of the fracture network becomes weak. When we analyzed the distributions of flow rate calculated at each fracture element with the exponent ${\beta}_l$, the mean flow rate at ${\beta}_l=1.0$ was estimated to be about 447 times larger than that at ${\beta}_l=6.0$ and for the flow calculated at the outflow boundary of the fracture network, the case of ${\beta}_l=1.0$ was estimated to be 6,440 times larger than that of ${\beta}_l=6.0$.
