  • Dynamic interaction of the ground-foundation-structure must be considered for safety of earthquake resistant design for piles supported structures. The p-y curve, which is proposed in the static load and cyclic load cases, is used for the earthquake resistant design of piles. The p-y curve does not consider dynamic interaction of the ground-foundation-structure on dynamic load cases such as earthquake. Therefore, it is difficult to apply the p-y curve to earthquake resistant design. The dynamic p-y curve by considering dynamic interaction of the ground-foundation-structure has been studied, and researches had same conditions that pile caps were on the ground surface and superstructures were added on pile caps for the simple weight. However, group piles are normally embedded into the ground except for marine structures, so it seems that the embedding the pile cap influences on the dynamic p-y curve of group piles. In this study, the shaking table model test was conducted to confirm dynamic behavior of group piles by the embedded pile cap in the ground. The result showed that dynamic behavior was different between two cases by embedding the pile cap or not.

  • The precise analysis of soil-pile-structure interaction requires a proper description of soil layer, pile, and structure. In commonly used finite element simulations, mesh boundaries should match the material discontinuity line. However, in practice, the geometry of soil profiles and piles may be so complex that mesh alignment becomes a wasteful and difficult task. To overcome these difficulties, a different integration method is adopted in this paper, which enables easy integration over a regular element with material discontinuity regardless of the location of the discontinuity line. By applying this integration method, the mesh can be generated rapidly and in a highly structured manner, leading to a very regular stiffness matrix. The influence of the shape of the soil profile and piles on the response is examined, and the validity of the proposed soil-pile structure interaction analysis method is demonstrated through several examples. It is seen that the proposed analysis method can be easily used on soil-pile-structure interaction problems with complex interfaces between materials to produce reliable results regardless of the material discontinuity line.

  • Various approaches have been developed for the dynamic response analysis of piles. In one of the approaches, the soil-pile interaction is approximated by using parallel nonlinear springs, namely the p-y curves. Currently available p-y curve recommendations are based on static and cyclic lateral load tests. Other researchers have attempted to extend the p-y curves by incorporating the effects of liquefaction on soil-pile interaction and derived scaling factors of p-y curves to account fur the liquefaction. However, opinions on the scaling factors vary. In this study, the sealing factors, which reflect the variation of the elastic moduli of surrounding soils, were established combining the relationship between excess pore pressures and the natural frequencies of a soil-pile system obtained from Ig shaking table tests and the relationship between the elastic moduli of surrounding soils and the natural frequencies of a soil-pile system obtained from numerical analyses. As a result, the scaling factors were presented in an exponential function.

  • The most of original horizontal bearing capacity theory of the pile is not efficiently to consider interaction between soil and pile because it is only to consider the earth pressure theory and separately the ground form pile. In recent, in order to improve the pile technology, it is necessary to confirm the real behaviour characteristics of pile under lateral load. Hence, to evaluate the behaviour characteristics of the single and group pile under lateral loads using the strain wedge model that could consider the interaction between soil and piles. Primarily, laboratory scale down model tests was carried out to predict the behaviour characteristics on real size piles using the strain wedge model. The comparative analyses between model test and numerical analysis for the evaluation of whole behaviour were conducted.

  • In engineering practices, the superstructure was analyzed under a fixed boundary condition and the foundation was designed by considering the loading condition of superstructure. It may result in overestimation of forces, the bending moment, settlement of superstructure and foundation. In this study, an interactive analytical method is proposed for the interaction between the superstructure and the piled raft. The overall objective of this study is focused on the application of interactive analysis method for predicting behavior of entire structures. And a series of numerical analyses are performed to verify the interactive analysis routine in comparison to the unified analysis method. Through the comparative studies, it is found that the iterative and interactive analysis gave similar results of settlement and raft bending moment compared with those of finite element analysis. And it is also found that the proposed design method considering interaction between superstructure and foundation is capable of predicting reasonably well the behavior of entire structures. It can be effectively used to the design of a superstructure-piled raft foundation system.

  • When bridge abutments are constructed on pile foundations in unstable slope, horizontal deflections may be developed in the piles and the abutments due to lateral soil movements arisen from backfills. In most of the above mentioned cases, the piles are situated in a soft layer where lateral earth pressures are developed between the piles and the soils. The undesirable lateral earth pressures decreases the stability of the piles. However, the piles may have a preventive effect against lateral soil movements and improve the stability of the slope. For the stability problem of such slope containing piles in a row, two kinds of analyses for the slope-stability and the pile-stability have to be performed. The whole stability of bridge abutments on pile foundation can be obtained only by the stabilization for both the slope and the piles. A reasonable analytical method for the bridge abutments on pile foundation was established in this study By use of the analytical method for an example, several factors which influence affect the stability of bridge abutment were investigated. Finally, for the bridge abutment subjected to lateral deflections damage, the fixity condition of pile head was investigated.

  • Current design of pile group is based on the estimation of the overall bearing capacity of a pile group from that of a single pile using a group efficiency. However, the behaviors of a pile group are influenced by various factors such as the method of pile installation, pile-soil-pile interaction, cap-soil-pile interaction, etc. Thus, it is practically impossible to take into account these factors reasonably with the only group efficiency. In this paper, a new method for the design of pile groups is proposed, where the significant factors affecting the behavior of a pile group are considered separately by adopting several efficiencies. Furthermore, in the proposed method, the load transfer characteristics of piles and the difference of pile behaviors with respect to the pile locations in group can be taken into account. The efficiencies for the method are determined using the settlement failure criterion, which is consistent with the concept of allowable settlement fur structures. The efficiencies calculated from the results of existing model tests are presented, and the bearing capacity of a pile group in the other model test is calculated and compared with that from the test result to verify the validity of the proposed method.

  • Seismic analyses of structures were carried out in the past assuming a right base and Ignoring the characteristics of foundations and the properties of the underlying soil. Resent soil-structure interaction studies show that seismic response of structure can be affected significantly by these fators. Typical effects of the soil-structure interaction are the kinematic interaction of a rigid massiess foundation and the inertial interaction between underlying soil and structure. The kinematic interaction effect is particularly important for embedded foundations and can be ignored for surface foundations with vertically propagating waves. In this study, seismic response of structure was investigated with four buildings in Mexico City considering only the inertial interaction effect and using the E-W components of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake records. The study was carried out for surface foundations and pile foundations with linear and nonlinear soil conditions, comparing the results with those of the rigid base.

  • In this study, the soil-structure interaction(SSI) effect on the seismic response of LNG storage tanks was investigated according to the type of foundation. For this purpose, a typical of LNG storage tank with a diameter of 71m, which is constructed on a 30m thick clay layer over bedrock was selected, and nonlinearity of the soil was taken into account by the equivalent linearization method. Four different types of foundations including shallow foundation, piled raft foundation, and pile foundations(surface and floating types) were considered. In addition, the effect of soil compaction in group piles on seismic response of the tank was investigated. The KIESSI-3D, which is a SSI analysis package in the frequency domain, was used for the SSI analysis. Stresses in the outer tank, and base shear and overturning moment in the inner tank were calculated. From the comparisons, the following conclusions could be made: (1) Conventional fixed base seismic responses of outer tank and inner tank can be much larger than those of considering the SSI effect; (2) The influence of SSI on the dynamic response of the inner tank and the outer tank depends on the foundation types; and (3) Change in the seismic response of the structure by soil compaction in the piled raft foundation is about 10% and its effect is not negligible in the seismic design of the structure.

  • The lateral load which is applied to the pile foundation supporting the superstructure during an earthquake is divided into the inertia force of the upper structure and the kinematic force of the ground. The inertia force and the kinematic force could cause failure to the pile foundation through different complex mechanisms. So it is necessary to predict and evaluate interaction of the ground-pile-structure properly for the seismic design of the foundation. The interaction is affected by the lateral behavior of the structure, the length of the pile, the boundary conditions of the head, and the relative density of the ground. Confining pressure and ground stiffness change accordingly when the relative density changes, and it results that the coefficient of subgrade reaction varies depending on each system. Horizontal bearing behavior and capacity of the pile foundation vary depending on lateral load condition and relative density of the sandy soil. Therefore, the 1g shaking table tests were conducted to confirm the effect of the relative density of the dried sandy soil to dynamic behavior of the group pile supporting the superstructure. The result shows that, as the relative density increases, maximum acceleration of the superstructure and the pile cap increases and decreases respectively, and the slope of the p-y curve of the pile decreases.
