Sand pile is widely used as a ground improvement method. Although the primary purpose of constructing sand pile is accelerating consolidation, composite ground effect also can be gained by constructing sand pile. This study was accomplished to understand composite ground effect on the ground improved by sand piles which were applied as vertical drainage material when area replacement ratio was small relatively. For determining bearing capacities of origin ground and sand piles and analysing interaction between embankment and origin ground, bearing tests and earth pressure monitoring are performed. From the results, it turned out that the contribution of sand pile as a load bearing mechanism is not substantial. However, the bearing capacity of sand pile was increased to sixty percentages when compared with origin ground. The increasement of bearing capacity could be caused the change of consolidation characteristics during the process of consolidation by overburden load. Therefore, the composite ground effects depending on stiffness increasement of sand pile would be estimated as a factor decreasing consolidation settlement.
In this study, behavior of a rigid continuous wall, earth pressure distribution with construction stage, and axial force of earth anchors were evaluated based on field monitoring data and numerical analysis results. For this purpose, a construction site excavated using the diaphragm wall was selected and full instrumentation system was introduced. From monitoring results, it was found that the values of horizontal displacement of the wall measured from the inclinometers, which were installed within the diaphragm wall were similar to analytical value. The earth pressure increased with excavation progress due to jacking force of the ground anchors installed in previous excavation stages. When the excavation depth reached 60% of the final depth, observed earth pressure distribution was similar to that estimated from Peck's apparent earth pressure distribution. When the excavation depth was around 90% of the final depth, values of observed earth pressure showed middle values between those of Peck's and Tschebotarioffs apparent earth pressures. It was also observed that, when excavation depth is deep, values of the earth pressures from the rigid wall were similar to those estimated from conventional earth pressure distribution shape proposed for flexible walls.
Laminar-shear-boxes are widely used to simulate free-field seismic ground response by using a l-g shaking table or geo centrifuge in geotechnical earthquake engineering. This study numerically modeled and compared the ground responses in the free field, rigid box, and laminar shear box by using a 3-D FEM program. It is found from the numerical simulations that the laminar shear box can simulate the free field ground movement more precisely than the rigid box. However, the laminar shear box underestimated the surface acceleration of the free field ground. It also showed low-frequency characteristics probably because the stiffness and inertia effect of surrounding ground are neglected.
This paper proposes the force equations(thrust, moment) of corrugated steel culverts through the finite element method. The conditions for maximum thrust and maximum moment are determined from the analysis of soil-structure interaction during the three construction stages, such as backfill to the crown, backfill to the soil cover, and live loads. The proposed form of thrust and moment equations are deduced from the analysis of behaviour and the application of Castigliano's second theorem for the semi-arch structure. Finally, the coefficients used in the proposed equations are determined from a large number of analysis for the various geometries and the soil-structure relative stiffness under the conditions of maximum thrust and maximum moment.

The shield tunneling method can minimize surface settlements by preventing the deformation of tunnel face and tunnel intrados due to tunnel excavation. For this purpose, it is very important to control the operating conditions of shield TBM. The face pressure and backfill pressure for tail void grouting should be the most important and immediate measure not only to restrain surface settlement, but also to influence the effective stress and pore water pressure around the circumstance of tunnel during excavation. The reaction of the ground to the application of face pressure and backfill pressure relies on the stiffness and permeability of ground. Especially, the reaction of saturated clayey ground formations, which shows the time-dependent deformation, is different from the permeable ground. Hence, in this paper it was investigated how the TBM operating conditions, ground stiffness, and permeability impact on the surface settlement of saturated clayey ground. For this purpose, a series of parametric studies were carried out by means of the stress-pore water pressure coupled FE analysis. The results show that the settlement of soft clayey ground is divided into the immediate settlement and consolidation settlement. Especially, the consolidation settlement depends on the ground stiffness and permeability. In addition, the existence of critical face pressure and backfill pressure was identified. The face pressure and backfill pressure above the critical value may cause an unexpected increase in the ground settlement.
The objective of BMP( Barge Mounted Plant) project is to construct plants on mooring floating structures at sea. To analyze the pile behavior under mooring dolphins, generally, axial or lateral behavior of soil-pile system is evaluated by using a nonlinear subgrade reaction method which models the pile as a structural element and the soil as series of nonlinear springs along the depth. As a result, load-displacement curves at pile head can be solved by finite difference method and the equivalent stiffness of bottom boundaries of dolphin structure is evaluated. In this study off-shore site investigation was performed on the marine area of Koje Island and axial and lateral load transfer curves of the ground were modeled with depth. The subgrade reaction analysis was performed for piles under axial or lateral loadings, and the required penetration depth and section of the pile were determined. Subsequently, the spring boundaries under the dolphin structure could be modeled from the calculated load-displacement curve and then the dynamic response of the dolphin structure was analyzed reasonably by considering ground conditions. The analysis considering the stiffness of the soil-pile system has resulted in larger displacement amplitudes than those for rigid foundations. Furthermore, moment distributions of the casing were dependent on the soil-pile system so that deformable foundation induces the larger moment of top section of casing and the smaller moment of pile head.
Recently, several studies have been conducted on virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring methods to simulate the soil-pile interaction in response to spectrum analysis of pile-supported structures. However, the soil spring stiffness has not been properly considered due to the seismic load magnitude, and studies on the response spectrum analysis of pile-supported structures considering this circumstance are inadequate. Therefore, in this study, the response spectrum analysis was performed considering the soil spring stiffness according to the seismic load magnitude, and the dynamic behavior of the pile-supported structure was evaluated by comparing it with existing virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring methods. Comparing the experiment and analysis, the moment differences occurred up to 117% and 21% in the virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring models, respectively. Moreover, when the analysis was performed using an API p-y curve considering the soil spring stiffness according to the seismic load magnitude, the moment difference between the experiment and analysis was derived at a maximum of < 4%, and it is the most accurate method to simulate the experimental model response.
The influence of tunnelling on buildings has become an important issue in urban areas. The problem is an interactive one: not only do tunnelling settlements affect existing structures, but existing structures affect tunnel-induced soil movements. In order to examine the constraint of surface settlement and the degradation of building damage parameters, 3-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analyses are peformed. Also, in this paper, the results of the parametric studies for the variations of the damage parameters due to the ground movements are presented by utilizing 2-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element models, totally 162 models. The width of a structure, its bending and axial stiffness, its position relative to the tunnel and the depth of tunnel are considered. The interaction is shown by reference to commonly-used building damage parameters, namely angular distortion, deflection ratio, maximum building settlements, maximum differential settlements and horizontal strain. By introducing relative stiffness parameters which combine the bending and axial stiffness of the structure with its width and stiffness of soil, design curves are established. These give a guide as to the likely modification of the greenfield settlement trough caused by a surface structure. They can be used to give initial estimates of likely building damage.
Xanthan gum biopolymer is an ecofriendly ground stabilizer that maintains stability in a wide range of temperatures and pH values. The binding effect of sandy soil particles realized by injecting xanthan gum biopolymer is dependent on the xanthan gum matrix, which is formed during the drying process; thus a study on the effects of the drying process of the xanthan gum solution on the changes in stiffness characteristics of sandy soil is required. In this study, shear wave velocity and electrical resistivity were monitored in sandy soil specimens saturated with biopolymer solutions of different gravimetric concentrations to investigate the improvement effects of biopolymer-treated sandy soils with the drying process. The experimental results reveal that both shear wave velocity and electrical resistivity increase during drying process. The results demonstrate the stiffness improvement effects of biopolymer-treated sandy soils. In addition, a higher stiffness improvement effect was monitored in the biopolymer-treated sandy soils with a higher gravimetric concentration. The results of this study may be used to estimate the stiffness improvement effects of sandy soils treated with biopolymer solutions with the drying process.
