EDTA-enhanced electrokinetic removal of copper and zinc from contaminated sandy soil was carried out. In desorption equilibrium tests, the required mass ratio of EDTA to metal was 10:1 to obtain over 90% of desorption from soil. The removal of heavy metals with chelating agent EDTA below pH 3 was limited because of EDTA precipitation. In electrokinetic experiments, the pH control at anode chamber was essential and 38% Cu and 56% Zn were removed under 30 mA for 1.5 days. Heavy metal removal was greatly improved by controlling anode and soil pH with circulation of anolyte with NaOH solution, in which >50% heavy metal was removed for 4 days and >70% for 9 days.

Permeable reactive barrier has been recognized as the one of representative methods for remediation of contaminated groundwater. Reactive barrier system containing two and more reactive materials can remove multiple contaminants such as nutritive salts and heavy metals. In this study, removal efficiency of multiple contaminants was evaluated when both zeolite and basic oxygen furnace slag were used as reactive materials. Sequential batch test which consists of two materials was performed to evaluate removal efficiency comparing the reaction order of them against nutritive slats including ammonium and phosphate and heavy metal including cadmium. As a result, zeolite-basic oxygen furnace slag sequence batch test showed the best efficiency for removal of multiple contaminants including nutritive salts and heavy metal.
This paper analyzes the map of soil contamination in years of 2009 by actual survey in Incheon. South-east national industrial complex and the US Army base in Bu-Pyung are turned out to be high polluted area because spilling of oil storage facilities, vehicle and glass industries. So, the soil contamination in Incheon Metropolitan area will be getting more attention. To solve this problem, the soil contamination has been predicted by using the visual Sufer and visual Modflow which are analysis program in geotechnique and water flow. The result of analysis is that F and TPH will be retarded after 5 years. However, the contamination diffusion will be increased if there is no proper management of soil contamination.
As sediment contamination problems have recently been raised in Korea, the need for technologies to remove contaminants in sediments has increased. Contaminated sediments in Korea has been annually dredged and treated using processes of coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation on barges, dewatered and dried at prepared site, and then disposed at a landfill site, which is very costly, and only a limited landfill space available in Korea. Contaminants in media containing a high percentage of silt and clay sized particles, typically, are strongly adsorbed on the particles and difficult to remove. Particle separation processes that separate the fine clay and silt particles from the coarser sand and gravel and concentrate the contaminants into a smaller volume of sediment that can be further treated of disposed of, are very effective in the post step processes. In this study are to test the feasibility of treating dredged sediments using a hydrocyclone process, and to estimate design parameters for a pilot scale test. A hydrocyclone was operated to separate larger particles from the sediments. It was found that the particle separation was greatly affected by the solid contents and inlet pressure in the hydrocyclone.
Recently, the pollution of soil and groundwater becomes a serious social problem, and geophysical exploration methods have been introduced as a remedial investigation method of subsurface. Digital technologies such as personal computer have revolutionized our ability to acquire large volume of data in a short term, and to produce more reliable results for subsurface image. Also, color graphics easily visualizes the survey results in a more understandable manner, and it is widely used for not only characterizing the contaminated subsurface but also monitoring contaminant and remedial process. In this paper, electrical resistivity and electromagnetic (EM) surveys were carried out in order to understand characteristics of waste landfills, and the applicability of geophysical prospecting to site assessment of waste landfill was also tested. According to the result, electrical resistivity and electromagnetic (EM) surveys were effective in estimating distribution of the leachate plume.

Diffused Aeration System (DAS) is one of the remediation methods used for removing contaminants in groundwater and this method brings air bubbles in contact with contaminated water, afterwards transferring contaminants in liquid phase into air phase. In this study, three applicability tests using DAS were conducted in two highly contaminated sites. For these tests, diffused air bubbles are generated with a in-flow rate of 17.1, 44.8 and 76.5 (1/min), respectively. The concentrations of TCE in grounwater and air phase were measured during the tests. The measured results showed that TCE concentration hit the highest value after 6~8 min and afterwards decreased gradually. Also, it was observed that the TCE concentration in air phase changed depending on the rate of diffused aeration. In addition, $K_La$ values from liquid to air phase were calculated based on the test results and those of three tests (test 1, 2 3) were 0.444, 1.158 and 1.836(1/hr), respectively. From the comparison of $K_La$ values, the faster air in-flow rate is, the higher the efficiency of the DAS is.
Recently, with the establishment of active stabilization measures, large-scale collapse of slopes is decreasing. However, the frequency of rockfalls due to the destabilization of floating stones or boulder within or above the slope has not been decreased significantly. As a measure for stabilizing rockfall and disaster prevention, protection methods such as rockfall barriers and rockfall protection nets are typically applied. However, the approach to catching the rockfall in a catchment area by reducing the energy of the rockfall and changing the rolling condition of the rockfall is relatively insignificant. Therefore, in this study, using a general-purpose rockfall simulation program, the change in the rolling characteristics of rockfall according to the specifications of the ditch installed under the slope was investigated. It is expected that the research results can be used as basic data to determine the specifications of the ditch that can be applied to general roads or trails.
Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) technology can be applied to contaminated groundwater remediation. It is necessary to select adequate reactive material according to contaminant characterization. In groundwater. In this research, the reaction between reactive material and heavy metal contaminants was estimated through batch test. Reactive material was slag, which has been produced in Gwangyang power plant, and heavy metal contaminants were cadmium, lead and copper. Batch test consisted of two testes: 1) sorption equilibrium test and 2) sorption kinetic test. Sorption equilibrium test was performed for estimating slag sorption capacity against contaminants. And sorption kinetic test was performed for slag sorption rate with contaminants species, contaminants initial concentration and sulfate. Sorption capacity and sorption rate were affected by contaminant species. Sorption rate increased with increasing initial concentration in lead and copper but decreased with increasing initial concentration in cadmium. Sorption rate increased in existing sulfate. In low concentration, film diffusion was domain mechanism, and in high concentration, particle diffusion was domain mechanism.
This paper proposed an environmental standard far beneficial use of dredged materials currently considered as waste materials. In Korea, even though chemical analysis of sediments are carried out frequently, their analysis results were not interrelated with the effects of biological lives due to a shortage of data, which may result in difficulty to develope Korean standards for reusing dredged materials. For these, this paper first searched existing foreign standards, analyzed local contaminated sediment data, identified their main components of contaminations and then compared clean-up standards of sediments consisting of lower and higher level. From these analyses new environmental standards considering Korean domestic circumstances are proposed. It is judged that newly proposed standards are appropriate in terms of both Korean national sedimental environments and economical recycling aspects because environmental standard levels proposed are higher than background level of sediments in Korea and foreign country's standards, where many experiences and environmental monitoring works have been already performed.
Solvent extraction using aqueous solutions is presumed as one of the most effective methods applicable to in situ conditions without excavation of contaminated soils. Laboratory permeameter soil flushing test is performed to describe the process of solvent extraction of contaminants absorbed on soil particles. When the permeameter tests conducted, diffusion of contaminants through the permeameter flexible-wall was considered for adjusting the remediation percentage. Input and output balance for concentration was well matched in the permeameter tests. Nitrobenzene diffused so excessively (approximately 75%) that it was not suitable for the permeameter desorption tests. No biodegradation was detected in the soil samples.
