Hoek-Brown model, which was developed in order to predict the behavior of rock mass, has widely been utilized and revised by many researchers to solve various problems encountered in tunnelling and slope stability analysis. However, there is no schematic investigation on the application of the Hoek-Brown model to numerical analysis including finite element simulations. In this paper the Hoek-Brown model was formulated as a constitutive model according to the procedure of generalized plasticity theory, and a Rounded Hoek-Brown model, which could overcome the numerical difficulties by modifying the edge part of the yield surface as a curve shape, was newly proposed. The new model could satisfy the requirements as an elasto-plastic constitutive soil model and follow the yield surface of the original Hoek-Brown model in the compression mode. The constitutive equation for the proposed model herein was established and presented to be applicable to the generalized nonlinear finite element analysis.
In recent years, tunnel construction is being increased in order to resolve traffic congestion around urban area, however there are a lot of difficulties due to restrictions such as interference with existing alignment, adjacent structures and cost increase of land acquisition as well as public complaints for negative environmental impacts near the expected tunnel construction site. Therefore, applications of close parallel tunnel have been increasing greatly. But close parallel tunnels cannot guarantee the stability compared with normal parallel tunnel which has enough distance between tunnels. So various methods to strengthen the pillar have been introduced recently, however there is few methods which consider the pillar behaviour in the state of compression. In this paper, the reinforcement methods which reflect the behavior of pillar were reviewed with comparision and analysis by numerical method.
In this study, artificial cemented sand made of a few portland cement and Nak-Dong river sand was researched closely to investigate cementing effect quantitatively through unconfined tests and triaxial tests. The peak strength and elastic modulus increased and dilation of cemented sand was restricted by the cementation, but after breakage of the cementation, dilation and negative excess pore water pressure increased. In stress-strain curve, strain-softening behavior appeared in drained condition but strain-hardening behavior was appeared in undrained condition as a result of the increase of effective stress. The test was quantitatively analyzed by multiple regression models, correlating each response variable with input variable. The equations are valid only over the range investigated. Its adjusted coefficient of determination was $0.81{\sim}0.91$, and dry density is important factor for estimating strength of cemented sand.
In the prediction of response of a pile in soil, numerical approaches such as a finite element method are generally applied due to complicate nonlinear behaviors of soils. However, the numerical methods based on the finite elements require heavy efforts in pile and soil modelling and also take long computing time. So their usage is limited especially in the early design stage in which principal dimensions and properties are not specified and tend to vary. On the contrary, theoretical approaches adopting linear approximations for soils are relatively simple and easy to model and take short computing time. Therefore, if they are validated to be reliable, they would be applicable in predicting responses of a pile in soil, particularly in early design stage. In case of wind turbines regarded in this study, it is required to assess their natural frequencies in early stages, and in this simulation the supporting pile inserted in soil could be replaced with a simplified elastic boundary condition at the bottom end of the wind turbine tower. To do this, analysis for a pile in soil is performed in this study to extract the spring constants at the top end of the pile. The pile in soil can be modelled as a beam on elastic spring by assuming that the soils deform within an elastic range. In this study, it is attempted to predict pile deformations and influence factors for lateral loads by means of the beam-on-spring model. As two example supporting structures for wind turbines, mono pile and suction pile models with different diameters are examined by evaluating their influence factors and validated by comparing them with those reported in literature. In addition, the deflection profiles along the depth and spring constants at the top end of the piles are compared to assess their supporting features.
There has been an increase in the investigation of deep sea sediments with a consequent increase in the amount of energy required to undertake these investigations. The geotechnical characteristics of Ulleung Basin sediment are explored by using depressurized specimens following methane production tests carried out on pressured core samples obtained at 2,100 m water depth and 110 m below sea floor. Geotechnical index tests, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope are conducted to identify the geotechnical index parameters, clay mineralogy, chemical composition, and microstructure of the sediments. Compressibility, and elastic and electromagnetic wave parameters are investigated for two samples by using a multi sensing instrumented oedometer cell. The strength chatracteristics are obtained by the direct shear tests. The dominant clay minerals are mostly kaolinite, illite, chlorite, and calcite. The SEM shows a well-developed flocculated structure of the microfossil. Void ratio, electrical resistivity, real permittivity, conductivity, and shear wave velocity show bi-linear behavior with the effective vertical stress: as the vertical effective stress increases. The friction angle obtained by the direct shear test is about $21^{\circ}$, which is similar to the value observed in the Ulleung Basin sediments. This study shows that the understanding of the behavior acting on the diatomaceous marine sediment is important because it often maintains the useful energy resources such as gas hydrate and so will be the new engineering field in the next generation.
This study implemented intelligent compaction technology at the construction site of the AY Highway in Gyeonggi Province, with a focus on obtaining the representative intelligent compaction value, CMV. The target CMV for quality control was established through trial construction, and the validation of the compaction quality control process based on intelligent compaction was conducted. The optimal approach for determining the target CMV was confirmed to be through linear regression of the average CMV measured within a 5-m radius from the plate load testing location. Upon assessing compaction quality against the target CMV, it was observed that the quality criteria outlined in the domestic intelligent compaction standard were met. However, the criteria outlined in Austria and the United States were not satisfied. Notably, indicators related to the variability of compaction quality did not meet the specified criteria, suggesting a stringent standard compared to the observed variability of CMV, ranging from 17% to 55%. Consequently, it is recommended to conduct additional field tests to further validate the compaction quality control process based on intelligent compaction. This will aid in confirming and enhancing the appropriateness of the regulations stipulated in each standard.
Nonlinear dynamic deformation characteristics, expressed in terms of normalized shear modulus reduction curve (G/$G_{max}-\log\gamma$, G/$G_{max}$ curve) and damping curve (D-$\log\gamma$), are important input parameters with shear wave velocity profile ($V_s$-profile) in the seismic analysis of (new or existing) fill dam. In this paper, the reasonable and economical methods to evaluate the nonlinear dynamic deformation characteristics for core zone and rockfill zone respectively are presented. For the core zone, 111 G/$G_{max}$ curves and 98 damping curves which meet the requirements of core material were compiled and representative curves and ranges were proposed for the three ranges of confining pressure (0~100 kPa, 100 kPa~200 kPa, more than 200 kPa). The reliability of the proposed curves for the core zone were verified by comparing with the resonant column test results of two kinds of core materials. For the rockfill zone, 135 G/$G_{max}$ curves and 65 damping curves were compiled from the test results of gravelly materials using large scale testing equipments. The representative curves and ranges for G/$G_{max}$ were proposed for the three ranges of confining pressure (0~50 kPa, 50 kPa~100 kPa, more than 100 kPa) and those for damping were proposed independently of confining pressure. The reliability of the proposed curves for the rockfill zone were verified by comparing with the large scale triaxial test results of rockfill materials in the B-dam which is being constructed.

The complexity of determining strain associated with shear modulus and damping ratio in torsional tests has been resolved by means of several approaches. Particularly, the modified equivalent radius approach is adequate to when generating the plots of equivalent radius ratio versus strain more effectively over any range of strains in resonant column and torsional shear (RC/TS) tests. The modified equivalent radius approach was applied for hyperbolic, modified hyperbolic, and Ramberg-Osgood models in evaluating damping ratio. Results showed that using a single value of equivalent radius ratio based on conventional equivalent radius approach is not appropriate. A new model was developed to consider the soil damping behavior at small strains as well as hysteretic damping and it was attempted to determine adjustments are required in evaluating strain associated damping when combining the two damping components.
This paper investigates numerically characteristics of the fluid flow in spatially correlated variable-aperture fractures under effective normal stress conditions. Spatially correlated aperture distributions are generated by using the geostaistical method (i.e. Turning Bands algorithm). In order to represent a nonlinear relationship between the effective normal stress and the fracture aperture, a simple mechanical formula is combined with a local flow model. Obtained numerical results indicate that the fluid flow is significantly affected by the geometry of aperture distribution varying according to the applied effective normal stress as well as the spatial correlation length of aperture distribution. Moreover, by using results simulated in this study, the modified Louis formula representing the relationship between the effective normal stress and the effective permeability of fracture is proposed.
Selection or generation of appropriate input ground motion is very important in performing a dynamic analysis. In Korea, it is a common practice to use recorded strong ground motions or artificial motions. The recorded motions show non-stationary characteristics, which is a distinct property of all earthquake motions, but have the problem of not matching the design response spectrum. The artificial motions match the design spectrum, but show stationary characteristics. This study generated ground motions that preserve the non-stationary characteristics of a real earthquake motion, but also matches the design spectrum. In the process, an impulse function-based algorithm that adjusts a given time series in time domain such that it matches the target response spectrum is used. Application of the algorithm showed that it can successfully adjust any recorded motions to match the target spectrum and also preserve the non-stationary characteristics. The modified motions are used to perform a series of nonlinear site response analyses. It is shown that the results using the adjusted motions result in more reliable estimates of ground vibration. It is thus recommended that the newly adjusted motions be used in practice instead of original recorded motions.
